Subject: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,Gamine (JennCat) Date: 03 Jun 02 - 11:49 PM Hey all ye folky folks! I am wondering where and when the folkfests are this summer. Anything near and around the Bay Area would be fantastic, as time and money are tight this year. My dad and mom used to take me all the time when I was young to all sorts of festivals (they were members of the Grand Rapids, MI Folklore Society) and I am just getting back into the swing of things (having picked up the guitar, dusted off my vocal cords, and gotten back to my roots). Any information would be so appreciated! |

Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Amos Date: 06 Jun 02 - 10:03 PM Well, Gamine, I'm sure you'd be welcome up in Washington in July but those are not the kind of fests you have in mind, I guess... A |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: mousethief Date: 07 Jun 02 - 01:21 AM Is it just me, or aren't "PNW" and "CA" mutually exclusive regions? Alex |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jun 02 - 01:49 AM PNW is Oregon and Washington, who seem to prefer to have nothing to do with us in CA. I wish they'd understand that we Northern Californians aren't obnoxious like those Southerners.... The San Francisco Folk Music Club should give you lots of information. You missed the "First Annual California Folk Festival," which was a rather nice gathering here in the Sacramento area on Mother's Day weekend. I doubt that it really was first, and it seemed more a Sacramento gathering than statewide. The San Francisco Free Folk Festival takes place June 15-16. Wish I could go, but I got hooked into playing a role in "Midsummer Night's Dream" and I'm tied up through July. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: open mike Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:35 AM the Kate Wolf memorial festival is at the end of june near laytonville, the Hog Farm...wavy gravy's home turf... strawberry nmusic fest happens each memorial and labor day weekends near yosemite on the grounds ofcamp mather, the san francisco city's campsite...wild iris happened last week i think, near booneville, and there is one comoing up in sacramento---the san fransico free fook msuic fest is a winner-and right in "town" there... hope you find your way top one or all...btw--there was once a book written by ernest callenbach which designated an area (including washington, oregon and northern calif) called ECOTOPIA--and proposed this area succeed -sp? seceed? from the union....and have an organic way of life, etc. somaybe that area is best called ecotopia, |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Genie Date: 07 Jun 02 - 04:26 AM THREAD CREEP ALERT! Who are you playin' in "...Dream," Joe? Oberon? Bottom? Puck? |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Amos Date: 07 Jun 02 - 09:26 AM Actually he's playing Oberon's Bottom... |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,mg Date: 07 Jun 02 - 10:36 AM I had always believed PNW to include Northern CA and BC as well...it is pretty loosely defined....I did a Google Search and here is one site. http://www.naturepark.com/map.htm mg |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: mousethief Date: 07 Jun 02 - 11:57 AM No self-respecting Oregonian or Washingtonian would admit any part of California (not even Mt. Shasta) as being in the PNW. Get your own moniker. And BC is in the Pacific South West, as any map of Canada will easily show. Alex |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,mg Date: 07 Jun 02 - 12:33 PM I would. mg |

Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: michaelr Date: 07 Jun 02 - 11:12 PM The Kate Wolf Festival is definitely a winner... go to www.monitor.net for info. And in September there's the Sebastopol Celtic Festival; headliners include this year: Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Fairport Convention, Eric Bogle, and lots more. Same URL for info. There's lots of smaller, local things happening, as well. Search www.folkfests.com and www.musi-cal.com! Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,Sonja Date: 08 Jun 02 - 07:48 PM Joe O., Don't you folks also have some kind of gathering going on over the New Year's Eve weekend in the Bay area? ~SWO~ |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,mgarvey@pacifier.com Date: 09 Jun 02 - 03:32 PM I'm a native of Washington. I think I have only been to California once..maybe twice..can't remember the second time if there was one though so it must not have been that much fun..but I am concerned about having it be ok to put down any geographical, racial, vocational etc. group of people. mg |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: michaelr Date: 09 Jun 02 - 04:02 PM Ah come on mgarvey - it's just a bit of good-natured ribbing. This sort of thing goes on between counties, and between towns, just about anywhere, I'm sure. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Haruo Date: 09 Jun 02 - 04:14 PM Personally, I'm not as much of a Lesser Seattle rabid fan as mousethief seems to be. I am a born and bred Seattleite, both of whose parents were also born in-state, yet I'd be willing to consider everything north of Marin County and south of Barrow as PNW, including those portions of "the other CA" (when I saw the thread title I wasn't sure if they meant Canada or California) that are west of, say, Saskatoon. And of course the Minnesotans and what have you are nearly Northwesterners in their own rite (sic), partly because in Colonial Days nobody knew Northwest from North Central, and partly because so many of them are cousins of Ballard residents. But they are the GNW, not the PNW. But I agree that San Francisco is not by any admissible definition PNW. Liland 54°40' or fight, enit? |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Haruo Date: 09 Jun 02 - 04:23 PM At least I think Eureka and Yreka could qualify if they really tried. And Idaho, at least from Lewiston north (not too thrilled about allowing Boise in). What we need, now that the INS is going to swallowed by the Terror Dept., is our own PNW INS to make sure only people who belong here are allowed in. Of course, if California does the same thing we have the right to gripe. Liland Denizen of Central Ecotopia |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Deckman Date: 09 Jun 02 - 05:20 PM Actually, speaking as a native of Washington native, I do have fond feelings for Northern California. I would suggest that the "LINE" be drawn just South of Big Sur and North of Santa Barbara. Certainly within the boundries I suggest, I have always found common ground with folks and folksingers. And yes, I have been to Southern California several times. I would also suggest that if we get a real floor fight here, I will offer my services as the "dependable one to hold the money!" CHEERS, Bob |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Haruo Date: 09 Jun 02 - 07:12 PM Well, heck, man, Deckman, if "fond feelings" are the criterion, I have fond memories of the Black Hills from 35+ years ago, and of Jokkmokk in northern Sweden, and Hokkaidō... Soon we will have solved all of the world's problems by subsuming them all into the PNW. ;-) Liland |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Deckman Date: 10 Jun 02 - 04:21 PM Liland ... Makes perfect sense to me! CHEERS, Bob |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,mg Date: 10 Jun 02 - 10:44 PM Let's have a Sunnycamp on the Long Beach Peninsula (I know..totally inaccessable to all but me) in early October..just as the cranberries are ripening...there is a park, nothing fancy, just downt he road from me for campers, and, unless it is the weekend of the Cranberry festival, I bet we could use the big hall next to the Cranberry museum..also where I work. Put it on your calendars now and make me stick to it. mg |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,gamine Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:21 PM PNW, as far as I am concerned, also includes Oregon and Washington.... Right? (she asked sheepishly) |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,Gamine, again Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:29 PM I should have put this under the heading: PNW DEBATE! Where and what is it and does anyone really want to be a part of it? :-) You guys gave me a lot of info. I especially liked the links -- and I had checked out the Soka University Festival already and am excited about trying to make the trip! Also, the San Fran. Festival is so close it would be a shame for me NOT to go check it out. For future reference, when $$ and time afford, any good ones (smaller, intimate, camping over type deals) anywhere around, even up washington/oregon way? I would dig a cool place to informally meet and jam with people, sleep over, talk/drink/jam into the night.... ? |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Amos Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:57 PM Gamine: Here's some summer activity of the sort you mention. Who knows, it might turn into an annual event! (The thread has an earlier part linked at the top of it). A |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: GUEST,mg Date: 11 Jun 02 - 01:01 AM there is a wonderful camping one at the end of June or early July..it used to be at Camp Alexandra and nw is at Mission B.C. I doubt I'll make it. I had info but lost it so maybe someone from VFSS can provide it. Also, there is at least one on Vancouver Island near Duncan, maybe Labor Day weekend? Really really nice. mg |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Genie Date: 11 Jun 02 - 12:02 PM Liland, ("At least I think Eureka and Yreka could qualify if they really tried...." Well, I think we should at least allow Weed into the conglomerate, and any of its neighbors to the north.* If we held a folk festival at Gilmore, we could all eat garlic ice cream. Mmmmmm.... Genie *Portland has Reed College; California has Weed College. |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Gamine Date: 11 Jun 02 - 01:29 PM Genie: ha ha and SOOOOO true, especially in Eureka! Thank god for it, too! ;-0 Did you mean Gilroy? I have not heard of Gilmore...but I know the Gilroy Garlic Fest is coming up soon (July I think) |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: Genie Date: 11 Jun 02 - 01:38 PM Oops! Yeah, Gamine, I did mean Gilroy! Here's the inside stink on theGilroy Garlic Festival |
Subject: RE: Help: Where are the PNW (CA) folkfests? From: mousethief Date: 11 Jun 02 - 02:18 PM Having looked at a map and ascertained that SF is indeed closer to LA than to Grant's Pass, I stand by my assertion that SF is not in the PNW. I'm not entirely sure about Grant's Pass. Alex |
