Good stuff, Mark!

You deserved the win too.

Beat South Korea and you're through.

Question, will this make the headlines in US newspapers? It certainly should

We're posting on them all huh Mark!!!!!!!

Gawd, what a game!!! Good coaching calls, excellent team play, lots of focus.......Yeah we play "Soccer"..........And no, we aren't going to win the thing, but at least this oughta' get a little respect. This was a USA win, not a Portugal loss......Both teams played well and it wasn't a matter of bad play, bad calls, or bad breaks!

Oh yeah Guest...It will. The game is really pretty big here anymore and in certain places it's huge. Lots of our kids are playing Soccer as opposed to football or basball and in my case, it wasn't til my son got into it that I did too. "Soccer Moms" has become a descriptive title anymore. It's going to get great coverage in a lot of cities like here in Columbus because so much of the team are MLS players including our own Brian McBride who scored the third goal who's with the Colunbus Crew.

A new world fitball power is born!

What I wanna see is the U.S. players starting to use just ONE name. Adds to the glamour.

True story: went to a Chinese take-away yesterday, and ordered while the staff were all glued to a giant TV screen. Being the affable sort that I am I started chatting and cheering, complimenting the Chinese team on it's passing etc. Thought to myself: It's still nil-nil, these folks should be a little more positive about their team. As I left, I wished them good luck, and said, It looked to me that they might pull it off. When I got home, I found out that the game (and loss) had been over for hours, and they'd been watching the REPLAY. I'm sure they were all VERY impressed with my technical knowledge.

Cheers

Rick

Whoo, I bet the Portugese are REALLY embarrassed!

SOCCER-MAD U.S. CRAZED OVER WORLD CUP "What? No We're Not," Say Blindly Obsessed Americans

New York, N.Y. (SatireWire.com) — As World Cup fever grips the globe, nowhere is the mania for Earth's greatest sporting event stronger than in the United States, where 280 million soccer-mad Americans are on the emotional edge, unable to think or talk about anything else. As one zealous U.S. supporter explained: "World Cup... World Cup, that's... racing?"

As they did during France '98 (above), most Americans will paint themselves in team colors and stay riveted to their TV sets during the 2002 World Cup. Yes, the insanity is almost palpable.

As happens every four years, the United States will all but close down during the tournament in a ritual obsession as indigenous to America as the camels that graze on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and one little understood in other nations.

"On Wednesday at 5 o'clock in the morning, I'll probably be sleeping, why?" exclaimed New Yorker Paul Sanders of his plans for the June 5 U.S. opener against Portugal, which will be televised live from Seoul, South Korea.

Compare that to the more laid-back approach to the sport elsewhere. "If I miss even the first minute, I will cut off my head in despair," said one Argentinean.

With national pride riding on the outcome, U.S. players are under incredible pressure to win the Cup. Certainly defender Jeff Agoos doesn't want to repeat the assaults he endured after the Americans' poor showing in France '98.

"We got off the plane from Paris and this guy comes up and asks for directions to the men's room. I guess he thought I worked there or something," recalled Agoos. "Then I think I went to baggage claim."

Though veterans like Agoos remain, many new faces have joined this year's team, and arguments over which of them should see playing time dominate kitchen table conversations. For most of the last few months, the all-consuming question on Americans' minds: will coach Bruce Arena choose to start Kasey Keller or Brad Friedel at keeper?

As Josh Carpenter, a Chicago electrician, said when asked if the Friedel-Keller decision would be second-guessed for years to come: "Keeper? Like Sutherland?"

But perhaps no development has so consumed the nation as the torn knee ligament suffered by defensive midfielder Chris Armas in a recent game against Uruguay. The day after it happened, newspapers splattered the story across their front pages, with angst-driven headlines such as "Rain Expected Across Midwest," and "Lost Girl, 15, Found in Truck Stop."

For all the concern over the starting 11, however, most Americans will soon focus on the competition in Group D. And there, one country, and one player, stand out: Portugal and its star Luis Figo, the reigning football World Player of the Year.

"No way. They play football in Portugal?" said Milwaukee resident Kevin Williams, displaying grudging respect for Figo. "Well, they wouldn't stand a chance against the Green Bay Packers, I'll tell you that right now."

Win, lose, or draw, there's no question the United States is engrossed in the World Cup. But the level of preoccupation has surprised even long-time observers. The most telling signs: the country's largest corporations, resigned to millions of "no-shows," have already decided to give employees the month off...

"No we haven't," said General Motors spokesman Dean Pagette.

... and even the U.S. Congress will shut down for the Final on June 30.

"Thank you for calling the United States Senate legislative schedule hotline. Please note the Senate will be closed June 30 in order to have the floors cleaned."

Cute piece Guest.........'Course it's frankly getting dated anymore, especially when 2000 folks showed up at Crew Stadium out here in the hicky part of the midwest at 4:30 in the morning to watch a game on TV. The sport's spectators may not be as ravenous as in other parts of the world, but it's growing by leaps and bounds and is getting bigger all the time. More kids now play Soccer than any other team sport. Doesn't really thrill me because I love baseball, but through my kids I've become a fan. Lots of "Soccer Moms and Dads" in all parts of the states now.

So just as soon as we take over this whole thing, the rest of the world can blame us for screwing up their sport with typical American overkill. We plan on really pissing everyone off by forcing the game to be called Soccer.

"What I wanna see is the U.S. players starting to use just ONE name."

But wouldn't that get a bit confusing? Imagine doing a commentary on a side like that...

..................

Isn't it more fun being the underdogs for once and winning a game against the odds, though? And in a real "world series".

But you'd have thought that if there was one country in the world which ought to be geared to playing the world game it'd be a conglomeration of peoples like the USA.

What worries me is when America takes the game over it will be played in five minute segments to accomodate adverts and have a penalty shoot out at the end of each one so someone scores at least every five minutes to keep all the attention defecit sports fans happy. Try explaining the joy of a good nil nil to the average Yank!

hey Harvey, I know what you mean.......Good piece of irony for you---The coverage of the games is being run on an all-sports network, ESPN, and thanks to the main sponsor it is commercial free!!! The ads only run before or after the game and at halftime. What struck me as somewhat ironic today was watching the "commercial free" game between Ireland and Germany compliments of the main sponsor......Budweiser!

Spaw, I think the reason why US football is largely ignored in the US by mainstream types is because it is a sport which has, until this very moment, been one dominated by women athletes, with the men making a very poor showing.

McGrath, you aren't suggesting the recent US Women's team victory in the World Cup wasn't a "real world series"?

A bit chauvinist, that.

In the 1950 world championship the USA did beat England 1:0. Even a bigger sensation then than today. However, that victory hasn't boosted football's popularity in the USA. Perhaps it's different now.

It's a puzzle though. Pretty well everywhere else in the world, you have a bunch of poor kids, they'll start kicking a ball around, but the very same kids, when they are in the USA, they apparently don't want to know, even though all their relatives down in Latin America or back in Europe or Africa are obsessed with it. Or at least the boys are.

Is something to do with a need people have to turn away from the places their parents came from?

McG:

My parents came from here. Their parents came from here. Some families have been here a long time -- even some poor ones. Don't see how that has ANYTHING to do with whether or not kids want to play soccer.

Anyway, to answer your question, they're too busy playing Nintendo to play soccer.

well, the USA is hampered by having 4 or 5 major sports already...a couple of which were sort of invented here. It doesn't leave much TV space for soccer/football....especially when, as Harvey says, our sports are better designed to allow commercial breaks..*grin*

still, there ARE lots of soccer teams and it is a sport which can be played if you are under 250 lbs and under 6'6" tall...so, gradually, it is catching on...

(remember...we don't do 'serious' bike racing either, but we have had a couple of champions)

now if some of those 500 cable TV channels could be devoted to the sport....................

The great thing about soccer on TV is that you can leave to go to the bathroom or the kitchen, and be almost certain that nothing exciting happened while you were away.

Obviously you weren't watching the Japan Belgium game. Anyway congrats USA team and supporters that was no mean feat. I have a theory about the erstwhile popularity of the game in the USA. I think that many people felt in the US that soccer/football was from somewhere else and therefore not American but I think now times have changed and they realize that it is the one true world's game. Just my theory 'course. Den

Fitba'--soccer, if you must--suffers from a lack of publicity in the TV-dominated US largely because it doesn't lend itself to television programing. Not enough commercial breaks.

But why don't they feel like that in most of the countries in America? It's still a bit of a puzzler.

I mean, the game wasn't invented in Brazil either, though it's hard to believe that, seeing the way they play. And America's hardly the only country with TV advertisers who want to get their grubby hands on everything.

I imagine most people realise that the word "Soccer" isn't an American coinage, it's the normal abbreviation for "Association Football" - as opposed to all the other football codes, such as Rugby Football (in either of its two versions), or Gaelic Football, or Australian Rules, or American Football.

Basically "Football" is what people call whatever happens to be the most popular version in their country. In most parts of Ireland "Football" tended to mean Gaelic Football , but these days it's changed. When Soccer becomes the main type of football in the USA, I imagine it'll be called Football. Or maybe Fútbol.

Oops, Michael, that was a goof, and I apologize. After years of watching tape-delayed major sporting events from the Mainland, with the results announced on the radio and on the street earlier in the day, this time I got to watch one live, and I completely forgot that most of my countrymen and women would be watching it on tape delay. Actually, it's even worse for those of us in Hawaii who didn't stay up till 1AM--the match won't be broadcast locally on ESPN until 11PM tonight (Wed., June 5)! This six hour difference between Hawaii and the U.S. East Coast still pops up and bites me from time to time. But the weather's not bad...

Watching the game on tape is not the same. Many employers in the UK are expecting mass absenteeism on Friday when England play Argentina (12.30 p.m.).
Pubs with big screens will be full, and some companies have finally taken the bit between the teeth and started introducing forms of "Flexitime" to ensure that staff watch on their own time, and make up the hours (rather than "phoning in sick")
As for explaining how a nil-nil draw can be a "Good game", I believe that this world cup has produced the longest run of games with no non-scorers!
Congratulations to the USA team, and I hope Agoos doesn't get dropped (or panned by the media) for that single mistake. The rest of the game he played well!.
As for the US media not liking a game with a single, half-time, break; why don't they show the matches letterbox format, they could sell advertising on the rest of the screen!
Cheers
Nigel

ME and my Big Mouth. I've just finished watching France v Uruguay. The first no-score draw of the series.
For anyone who can't understand how you can have a "good game" with no goals scored, this is a fine example. (although I've just given away the result). Following an early foul and sending off (26 minutes in) France played with only 10 men against 11. Much of this match had me on the edge of my seat.
There seemed to be a cynicism in the way Uruguay played, deliberate fouls, and "diving" (pretended injuries in the hope of a free kick or penalty). France were no saints either, but they had to hold their reactions under control, or risk a second sending off.
I hope this is not a taste of things to come for the England Argentina match tomorrow, which is already being heralded as a 'grudge' match for previous World Cup meetings (and the Falkland islands in '82).
It would be great to think that the hype hadn't reached the teams, and they would just go out to play a sportsman like game Deo volente
But I am ever the optimist.

The France Uruguay game was a real show and I loved watching. AS to the "acting"......That end of Soccer is not lost on American kids at all and I just had a "conversation" with my nephew about it. He plays U-14 and is one hell of a defensive player. At the end of their last game before the championship match, they were up by one goal (1-0) and David took a hard hit. Both boys were down for a bit and David stayed down for a bit longer before moving slowly off the field with the coach. This ate up about three minutes and when play resumed there was less than two minutes left. David seemed to make a miraculous recovery on the sideline......The other team never got a good chance again and the game ended 1-0. David seemed just fine and I asked him if he was hurting at all. He said the hit had winded him and then when I asked point blank, he said that most of it was just killing time because the end was close! The ref could have but didn't stop the clock and David was well aware of about how much time that would take before they did and he called it pretty well.

Uncle Pat gave the lad a lecture about sportsmanship and all of that and he pointed out that it happens in pro Soccer. I still maintained it wasn't cool and then last night, since we get ESPN and they don't he spent the night to watch the games and lo and behold.............

AS someone said, basketball is still the pickup game but the most played game as an organized team sport for American kids between 6 and 18 is now Soccer. I swear to you folks that don't believe me, the game is huge here now and when these kids become the new players and fans, it will be monstrous, TV or no...and I'm sure the TV folks will figure it out as they have in the WC with uninterrupted, commercial free halves. It's been growing like mad for the past ten years and the last five years it has really taken off.

This WC will not "perhaps kindle an interest." This thing is already a full grown blaze here and the WC will add some fuel, but believe me, it doesn't need much fuel at all!!! A Columbus suburb just built new athletic fields and there are only two ball diamonds. There is one practice American football field (main field is at the high school). But there are FOURTEEN Soccer fields! Watch for us down the road folks..........

Spaw

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE U.S. TEAM! It would be a nice possibility, a match U.S-Argentina later !

Please if you have any business with Argentina from now 11:30 PM to tomorrow afternoon, suspend it until Saturday morning because we will have to sleep. And if Argentina wins, suspend all business until Monday, because we will be drunk.

Un abrazo - best luck, Brits - Andrés (the lonely argie of the Mudcat)

From harvey andrews..What worries me is when America takes the game over.. no fear of that harvey, 71% of Americans have no idea that world cup soccer is played in their country. 6% thought it was played underwater. It came 67th in the national popularity poll, following behind tractor pullling and log splitting and only just ahead of dwarf throwing!.

T.T.

Of course, 71% of Americans also don't know who the Vice President is, and aren't really sure if Canada is the one on top or on the bottom.

And of course those numbers could never change in the future; 71% have ALWAYS been clueless about soccer, and 71% will remain clueless until the Lord comes or the sun novas or whatever your particular belief set predicts.

Sorry, truthtoller, but your argument lacks that certain -- je ne sais pas quoi.

Yeah, and probably only some small percentage actually stay up with any sport at all. The biggest spectator sport in this country is auto racing and most people on the street can't identify the biggest names associated with it.

And whatever you said there 'thief.......I agree I'm sure!

I still can't believe this is spaw talking. So if you have been replaced by a football loving clone that's ok by me. Anyway I too have been watching the growth of the sport in N.America. Its growing in popularity here in Canada as well. I believe that it will be a major sport in the US before too long. I have watched the US team over the last couple of years and the thing that I find most striking about them is their fitness. They closed Portugal down the other night and ran them quite ragged. The thing they have to work on is technique but that too will come. They lack somewhat in that natural kind of flare that is found in the great European and S.American players. I think as more people get involoved with the sport future generations will be blessed with the more natural instincts. They put money into sport in the US which is admirable. I wish more money was spent in sport here in Nova Scotia. Our teams have to play on fields that are no better than cow pastures. It's a wonder there aren't more injuries. So good luck to the US soccer boys in the rest of the tournament. Den

Sorry Spaw. I forgot you were from Ohio. "Je ne se pas quoi" (not sure of the spelling of the 3rd word) means "I don't know what."

Having known a man who was paralyzed from the neck down by a high school football injury, I'm all for soccer replacing american football as the "football" sport of choice in this country. Bring it on!

Just don't expect me to watch.

Alex
