I have just finished a concert in Munich, here in Germany with 400 Germans and 8 Irish. Whatever the result we all had a wonderful night and the celebrations will continue back at my hotel, well done the USA, if you believe, all is possible.

Best wishes to all at Mudcat,

Pat Cooksey.

Ah Pat, please don't tell the final score in the thread title! I check in here before I sit down to watch the (taped) games, and it kinda takes the suspense out of it if I've already seen the result here.

Cheers,
Michael

Pat ,

I watched the match in my favourite pub (Grogans of Glasson) with about 20 Irish - and four Germans. Didn't matter - we cheered their goal (well.... maybe a bit quietly..) and they cheered ours (well...)

That's what it's all about, really.

Regards

Oh boy -- maybe they'll replay the game on ESPN tonight and I can catch it! Thanks for the headsup, Pat! Best thing is, it won't conflict with the second game in the Stanley Cup finals (hehehe).

BTW, when's the next game? ESPN is broadcasting some of the games 'live' here in the States; so, if someone can give me a time in GMT, I can figure out when to program my VCR.

Thanks!! -- Áine

Brilliant! Thanks, Den (missed you, too). The calendar's marked, and now I've got to go and find those bloody instructions for setting the VCR clock (again!).

All the best, Áine

Aine, here is the ESPN World Cup TV schedule. Here in Hawaii we get to watch the games live starting at 8:30PM...and we only have to stay up till 3AM for the late game! It does get a little embarrassing when I fall asleep while listening to a baby's heart, but I just say I was on call the night before. On the other hand Aine, I hope you saw the three goals scored by those Irish guys........O'Brien, Donovan, and McBride. Sorry they couldn't be playing for Ireland as well as the USA!!!!!

In Cologne it was great. In the Corkonian, they displayed the local "Express Zeitung" with the headline,"Sorry Iren - Heute weint ihr in euren Guiness!" After the game, there was another headline to put up alongside it, "So ein Mist!" My (imperfect) translation - "Sorry Irishmen - today you'll be crying into your Guiness" and then later, "Oh Shit!".

I have almost no German, but I believe the name of that Licquer "Irish Mist" always raises a giggle from Germans.

Yes, Declan, always.

Somehow it seems easier to analyse after a game why it went as it did than to predict before the game.

Another famous before-the-game headline in a German newspaper was in 1974 in BILD:

"Ten reasons why we shall win today" (against the GDR).

That turned out to be the only game Germany lost during that year's world cup.

Argentina may have been a bit flat and England played well, but if I get a vote for "Player of the Game" I'll vote for Mills. What an overall great job on defense!!!! He wasn't always perfect, but the man was ALWAYS there!

Congrats to all of you and Andres....Sorry old friend.

Judging by some of your comments here Wolfgang, I suspect that "Das Bild" is a rare visitor in your house!

In my house, never. But not reading the frontpage headline some place is close to impossible.
