A couple of months ago I emigrated to N.Zealand along with my two sisters. I am the only one into folk music and friends back home said they had heard good reports about the clubs here etc. I have now settled into my new Auckland home and ready to hit the 'folk life'. Where is it you kiwis.

There is a weekly club in Tauranga and we run a monthly Celtic session (Ist Sunday) at the Crown and Badger on the Strand in Tauranga. If you get time to travel from Auckland, that is. I came from the UK 18 months ago. Look out for the annual Auckland F Fest. - friendly event with LOADs of singing - bit like they used to do in UK clubs in the 70s!!

I heard a discussion yesterday where they were talking about what travellers New Zealand folk are. There was some really high percentage figure given of the resident population, who were currently out of the country at any one time.

Just remember that Fred Dagg, the originator of the Gumboot and Trev culture was driven out of the land of the long white weekend across to the mainland and is now living a moderately normal life under the name John Clark, while occasionally appearing on ABC posing as any number of politicians.

Contact Roger Giles who is 'mr folk music' in Nz - lives in Devonport, so is in the Auckland phone book, or Nigel Champion, ditto . Devonport folk club is on monday on Mount Victoria and there is also a folk club in Titirangi. good luck - it's a great place for folk music! love Barbara

An acquaintance of mine emigrated from California to NZ in the late 80s, and was never heard from again. I remember being told that it's really difficult to immigrate to NZ. Can anyone share info on this?

And Jenny - you're going back to England, is it? because NZ is TOO COLD???

I understand it can be quite difficult to emigrate here because to get a work visa you have to prove that the job you are applying for cannot be done by a resident. If you are some sort of professional however, there are ways around that - eg if you are keen to live here and don't mind a year or so in a small town you can often get a job when no one else is applying for it. Once you have worked for 2 years, you gain residency and can apply all over the country.

To me the fact this country is about the size of England yet has less than 4 million people is a plus. Who wants to see teaming crowds everywhere you go?

It doesn't get that cold here in the winter (depending on where you live). Trouble is though, our houses are not really built for cold weather - no double glazing on windows etc. Somehow we've turned the need for heating into a frivolous waste of energy. *grin*

I hope you've survived your first year and a bit in Aotearoa. Guess you've learned to live with the jibes from those who live on NZ's West Island. Snide remarks about sheep in NZ, coming from a place that celebrates sheep stealing in it's notional, national song. Why, they are just jealous, we all know it's too dry & arid to grow proper sheep. And, they don't know what a
gumboot is Jandal that's related to thongs. It's enough to give me a gut's full. You just have to put up with them - she'll be right!
No-one has "turned the light out" yet, though they almost did a couple of months back, when hydro-lakes were at very low levels. There were still a heap of folk there when I last crossed Foveaux Straight ten months back.

Serious Bit
Folk Music still seems to be active. As well as Mike Moroney's Kiwi Folk site which GUEST mentioned above, John Archer runs a fine one at NZ Folk Song

Alas, no cold roast mutton to gnaw on, will have to put up with local junk food for an early morning snack - sigh..

Oh dear, Allie, I can't resist any longer. I note the comment about being unable to get a work permit unless you can demonstrate that you can do a job that Kiwis can't. I take it there are heaps of work permits issued?

Now, I'm a Tasmanian (or was many years ago, before having a brain operation and moving to Queensland), and I reckon Kiwis are great people. All I have to do with the myriad jokes I hear is substitute "New Zealand" for "Tasmania", and it takes all the heat off my woolly girlfriends.

And many New Zealand folk songs are great - and some of their singers are even better (eg "When the Cat's Been Spayed" - a group that does all sorts of styles)

Hamilton used to have a thriving Folk Club and it was still going in 2000 unless they had reduced to occ concerts. How far is Levin? Still going as far as I remember and easily doable from Paraparm when I was there in 1995.

Trad is alive and well in Hamilton, tho' personally speaking, really, really trad scots would be more accurate.

However I guess I use as much, perhaps more from your tradition with a fair dose of Irish thrown in.

Chris Penman has shifted back to Hamilton. She used to run the Wellington Folk Centre about 20 years ago before moving to Dunedin. (And I'm guessing that Jack at Biddy Mulligan's is actually her Dad.) Wonderful British trad singing in that family! Chris sang the Wedding Song at our wedding.

It changed from Queen's Birthday to Labour Weekend a few years back and it's now a camping festival, held at the Brookfields Scout camp in Wainuiomata.
Have a look at wellingtonfolkfestival.org.nz (sorry, I haven't figured out the blickies).

Thanks for the link. "Blickies" are dead easy if you use the Make a Link ("blue clicky) on this page. You provided almost all the info needed with "wellingtonfolkfestival.org.nz". It needs "http://" in front.

Easy way to make a "Clickie" is:

1. Open the website in your browser
2. Highlight and copy the URL
3. Switch to the MC "Blickiemaker" linked to above
4. Paste the URL into the "Link URL" box.
5. Add what you want 'Catters to see in the "Link text" box
6. Hit "Create Link" then...
7. Copy and paste the result into your Mudcat Post....

YE GODS - that looks complicated, but go through it step by step, and you'll end up doing "Clickies" in seconds. Like Not on your Nelly, Nelly!

I went there and looked at the snapshots from 2002 - not a soul I knew. Ummm...

I see what you mean about the photos - mainly young people.
If you look carefully at the first one - Dancing to the Jews Brothers, you might recognise some of the white hairs. Is that Joan Prior? And Dick Willard is there with his mouth wide open.
But we don't seem to be in any of them - and we were there!

I'm over here in NZ at the moment with the "missus" - just doing a bit of touring and visiting her rellies. Yesterday we travelled from Taupo to Stratford along the Forgotten World Highway. Any NZers ever done this road - it is absolutely unbelievable.

Don't know if I'll get to see any music while I'm here. Heading up to Bay of Islands in the next day or so - anything happening up there?

Curly Goss, who used to run the Student Prince in Soho London back in the 60s emigrated to NZ I believe. If he's still around I can't see him not being involved in some way.
As a Scot and coming from a country where one of our army regiments is called The Sheepshaggers, I too suffer from jokes about wellie boots. However let me assure you all that we no longer use wellie boots for this purpose, we throw them on their backs instead, this way we can kiss them at the same time. Anyway that's what I'm told they do!!
