Subject: Island of Mull-Tannahill Weavers
From: Cliff
Date: 27 Apr 98 - 10:24 PM

I am looking for the lyrics to a song about the Island of Mull. The Tannahill Weavers recorded it on one of their recordings. I can only remember the chorus which goes something like:

Wherever I wander east or west Waking or dreaming You are near me oh joy of my heart, Eilean Mull-A

There's a song "An t-Eilean Muileach" (The Isle of Mull) in Gaelic with metrical English translation (and music) in Alfred Moffat's 'The Minstresly of the Scottish Highlands'. Its in both the full and cut reprint editions.

It's on their Cullen Bay album. I checked it out from the library a few years ago, and if I remember right the lyrics were on the liner notes. Otherwise, if I can find my (bootlegged) tape (shhh!) I'll try to transcribe it.

Copy & pasted from http://celtic.stanford.edu/artists/Tannies/lyrics.html:

JOY OF MY HEART

Sing ye o' the Cuillins o' Skye, Harris, Dunvegan, Fair Iona,
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh
Whether I wander east or west, waking or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.

Peat and heather, how they call me, little wee bothan by the hillside,
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh
Whether I wander east or west, waking or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.
Friendly hearts are waiting to greet me, welcoming arms are there to hold me,
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh
Whether I wander east or west, waking or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.

Thanks to Jon W. (I couldn't have found it without the hint)

Wolfgang

Subject: Lyr Add: THE ISLE OF MULL
From: Dan Mulligan
Date: 28 Apr 98 - 03:19 PM

This is "An t-Eilean Muileach" that Bruce mentioned. Not the same song that The Weavers recorded, but I thought someone might be interested. Dan

THE ISLE OF MULL

The Isle of Mull is of isles the fairest,
Of ocean's gems 'tis the first and rarest;
Green grassy island of sparkling fountains,
Of waving woods and high tow'ring mountains.

1

How pleasant 'twas in the sweet May morning,
The rising sun thy gay fields adorning;
The feathered songsters their lays were singing,
While rocks and woods were with echoes ringing.

The Isle of Mull, etc.

2

But gone are now all those joys for ever,
Like bubbles bursting on yonder river:
Farewell, farewell, to thy sparkling fountains,
Thy waving woods and high tow'ring mountains.

The Isle of Mull, etc.

Seeing that this song is in a bad shape, I have now copied it from the Tannahill Weavers website.

JOY OF MY HEART

Sing ye o' the Cuillins o' Skye

Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh

Whether I wander east or west

I just received this request from a friend
Can anyone help?

....the lovely scottish lady (Hannah) at Players Club last night was asking me where she could get a piece of music called "Isle of Mull" - apparently she has tried everywhere without success. So I said I got a friend who can talk to all sorts of musical people on the internet.... I'll ask!!

Any ideas??
Roger

"Joy of My Heart" has also been recorded by Archie Fisher with Garnet Rogers on "Off the Map", (Snow Goose Songs 1986)--lovely album, was it released in the States?

I always took the line to be "Harris and Eigg and fair Iona..." since Eigg like the others is an island while Dunvegan is a castle...

I have the music for An t-Eilean Muileach from Moffat's book, and will post the full text later this evening.  Roger -pm me with your email and I'll send you a copy of the sheetmusic; it's the one your friend is looking for.

I recall hearing Calum Kennedy sing this song. Can someone provide the Gaelic lyrics?

see message from Malcolm Douglas
Apparently the song was written in English and then translated to Gaelic; Malcolm provides both sets of lyrics. But how about older Gaelic lyrics to the same air (Leannan mo Ghaoil)?
