I'm 13, female and from the west mids in england! I play for my local border morris side and a youth display team but recently i have been looking for a exciting teen ceilidh band OR a group of teens (or NEARLY teens!) who would like to take part in a band of this sort! I play the fiddle, so anything from a melodion to a drum kit would be welcome! it will be a laff but we will be keeping the tradition going! PLEASE REPLY ON THIS BOARD! :-) milz

Hi Milz. I don't have anything to offer you in the way of information, but I want to welcome you to the mudcat. Don't be discouraged if you don't get an entirely warm and friendly welcome. Sometimes it happens like that. But there are many of us here who love that there is a new generation of people who are interested in the kinds of things you are enquiring about.

Milz, I think the best way might be to go to the Folkworks Summer School (click here), 29 July to 3 August in Durham. Fiddle tutor this year is Kathryn Tickell. You'll have a wonderful time, and meet lots of other people, some of your age, who may well be wanting to form a band too.

There aren't too many teenagers who post here (though there may be more who lurk and don't post), so don't be put off by a lack of response.

Keep asking, MILZ, I'm sure there are some folkies around your part of the country who will lead you to the connections you want; they probably haven't looked in this thread because the thread title is a little vague, if you see what I mean. If you put up a post to help.mudcat.org, perhaps they could change it for you -- for example to "Seeking Young Folkies In West Mids, UK" or something of the sort.

And welcome to the 'Cat!! Pay no mind to the little grump behind the curtain. They are like the little trolls that live under the bridges in your part of the world -- all stink and no bite.

Noreen's suggestion is better than any I can think of. Besides, my neices and nephew are all in the States.

My son who is slightly pre-teen, plays oboe...not a usual folk or ceilidh instrument. I wish he could find something like you are looking for. We are not too far from you, but probably just a little too far in the East Midlands. Good luck anyway.

A'right, aer kid! I was 19 for many years unitl one day I found I was thrity-somehting (I was about 45 at the time) and realised I'd grown up while I wasn't looking. Probably due to having two teenagers of my own. Beckie's still a teen at 19; engaged to the rhythm guitarist in Obzydian (some kind of beat combo).

I'm from the West Mids: Walsall, formerly in Staffordshire. I moved to Milton Keynes just recently ... so where are you based? Do you know Bill Jones (Gnosall?)

Guest-you're a twat-she said West midlands, england, secondly, the young should be encouraged, because they have the chance to get what the old never did.

MiLZ try the Pirt/Stephenson link because they are really rocking, and even an old git like me-just enjoys being there when they're at it, and they know loadsa people. See if there's a session near you, try local music shops to see if there is an ad.Noreen said most of it.

I'm a teen at heart...Actually 53 years young! I still get reminded at times that I am not as young as I once was by extreme soreness after doing that which is best left to the young! Welcome aboard, glad to see that there is hope for the preservation and future of our beloved folk music!!

Funny you should mention Algebra and pi! That always made me sore even when I was a young'un. Teachers never could get that right, no matter how much I argued with them. Pi are not square!!! Pi are round, and cornbread are square! When will THEY ever learn!!

As for being as old as tha last joke, not quite, I think that one already had long whiskers when I first encountered it many ago. But it is one of those that has survived the ages!! As for the composition of the flatulence...well, sometimes dust...!

Hi Milz welcome. I've been around umpteen years(actualy 44). I hope you find some folks your own age to play with in a band, but don't turn your back on the wrinklies. I play regularly in sessions in Manchester Pubs, with people of all ages (sadly not enough younger people these days). It's amazing what you can learn, but more importantly its fun. I realise that Pubs at your age are problematic, but when your older check it out. Good luck all the best PP.

Good luck in finding other teens...please, even here be careful about making connections unless your parents check them out. Most people here have others who can vouch for them, but do take all precautions that teens are supposed to take when making friends on the internet.

i try not to get annoyed by stuff guests say but i have to say a couple of things 1 - waste ur time being rude somewhere else and 2 - u best not have been being rude to noreen because shes always nice to me

Let me add another round of applause at your enthusiasm! Canna have enough people interested, and for one so young, that is remarkable. I wish you all the luck finding some kindreds of your age group.
