Subject: ADD Version: Somebody Stole My Gal
From: Joe Offer
Date: 28 Jan 14 - 05:10 PM

Here's my transcription from the Jim Kweskin recording, which is more-or-less the chorus, sung twice and jazzed up the second time:

SOMEBODY STOLE MY GAL
(original by Leo Wood 1918)
[as recorded by Jim Kweskin]

Somebody stole my gal.
Somebody stole my pal.
Somebody came and took her away.
She didn't even say she was leavin'.

Now, her kisses I miss so,
She's missin' mine, I know.
Yeah, gee!
If she could see,
Ah, me, her lonesome pal
You' know that she'd come runnin' right back to me,
Now, somebody stole my little gal.

[instrumental break]

Yeah, how, Somebody stole my gal.
Somebody stole my little pal.
Somebody came a-runnin' and he took her away.
She didn't even say that she was leavin'.

Now, her kisses, well, I miss so,
She's missin' mine, I know.
Yeah, gee!
If she could see,
Ah, me, her very lonesome pal
You' know that she'd come runnin' right back to me,
Somebody stole my gal.

Gordon Bennett!! How it takes me back..... You should know that here in Downunderland the ABC is repeating classic Brit comedy at 5.30am on Radio National. When I found out, I bought a new stereo with a timer recording facility. Now I've got a car full of tapes and I can listen to Round The Horne, Hancock, I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, My Word, The Goons, and Dad's Army whenever i feel like it. But no Navy Lark. Damn!!!! Mind you, no Billy Cotton either so it's not all that bad..........

Jeanie, if you keep this up I'll either have to stop lying about my age or claim that you were a teenage cradle snatcher.

But what came between Navy Lark/Clitheroe Kid and Sing Something Simple?

Then, a bit later on into the afternoon, it will be "Sing Something Simple" with the Cliff Adams Singers, while mum does the ironing...

What's next, Trevor and fat B ?

Yeah, Jeanie and Trevor, that's right, and somewhere Ian Hunter is listening to the ride out while Billy Cotton makes like he can't wait to get to the pub. "Hey, you down there, you with the glasses".

Aah. And Jean Metcalfe has just finished playing records for the lads at all those BFPOs, and The Navy Lark, or Jimmy Clitheroe, or Kenneth Horne is on in a minute, and Dad's sharpening the carving knife on the step!

Subject: Lyr Add: SOMEBODY STOLE MY GAL (Leo Wood)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:02 PM

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

SOMEBODY STOLE MY GAL
Words and music by Leo Wood, ©1918.

1. Gee, but I'm lonesome, lonesome and blue.
I've found out something I never knew.
I know now what it means to be sad.
For I've lost the best gal I ever had;
She only left yesterday.
Somebody stole her away.

CHORUS: Somebody stole my gal.
Somebody stole my pal.
Somebody came and took her away.
She didn't even say she was leavin'.
The kisses I loved so, he's getting now I know.
And Gee!
I know that she
Would come to me
If she could see
Her broken-hearted lonesome pal.
Somebody stole my gal.

2. Angels, they say, are only above.
I know that's wrong because my old love
Sure is an angel, take it from me.
And she's all the angel I want to see.
Maybe she'll come back some day.
All I can do now is pray. CHORUS

My very favorite version of this song was done by RICHARD MARKOW who Utah Phillips nicknamed THE LIVING CARTOON) when R.M. was singing with the great band (pretty much a jug band) called HOT TAMALE AND THE RED HOTS in Chcago's folk scene --- circa mid-1980s. The band consisted of Jan Burda, Fred Campeau, Rich Markow, Paul Breidenbach (Dobro)and Rich-something-or-other on tuba. They did the song on my old NPR radio show---The Flea Market. I still listen to those good ol' tapes.

Well, when we get to this 'certain age', fat B, I think we are entitled to go off on irrelevant tangents now and again ! I only have to think of that tune, and I can smell the roast dinner cooking while Billy Cotton Band Show is on the radio.... 'Wakey-WAKEY ! doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo ....'

For 'Catters of a certain age in the UK this was Billy Cotton's theme tune. Irrelevant ? Yes, but who cares.

The original sheet music is reproduced in A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody and Other Favorite Song Hits, 1918-1919, edited by David A. Jasen (Dover, 1997, pp. 129-131).

It precedes Kweskin by about thirty years, I think.

In my recollection it is almost as old as Jimmy Durante or the single-sided Victrrola record. But not as old as the cylindrical ones.

Found this(CLICK ME) but the MIDI is NOT jug band. Cab Calloway did it, too.

"Somebody stole my little pal

Somebody came and took her away

She didn't even

Tell me she was leavin'

Her kisses I miss so

She misses mine I Know

Oh Gee, she has to be

My very lonesome pal

But she'll come running

Right back to me

Somebody stole my gal"

I think this is a tune Jim Kweskin's band sang. I don't think I have the words exactly right and I am sure there are more.

Does anyone out there no this song?

Thanks

cbj
