Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bert Jansch From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Jul 02 - 01:40 PM "Back Home" by Bert Jansch, is on his album "When the Circus Comes to Town," Cooking Vinyl CD #92, 1995. It is also on "Cooking Vinyl Sampler Vol. 6," 1997. The best I could do was to transcribe a few lines from a sound sample at amazon.co.uk. This wasn't easy. His diction certainly leaves a lot to be desired, and therefore the following words are highly questionable. I recommend you listen to the sample and judge for yourself.
Stand on my high street, lookin' down to the sea. I'll take a drink from a friendly corner alehouse A more pleasant place you could never wish to be. Oh, to hear the women settle a bargain I see music sing and dance play in your air I'd look back home When you see the road...

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: BACK HOME (Bert Jansch) From: GUEST,m Date: 13 Oct 04 - 04:47 PM Hi, I have an official lyrics printed at the back of the poster of 'When The Circus Comes To Town' which was available by request just after the issue of the CD. It shows as follows; Back Home I got a wish, I got a a yearning to be home I got a longing to be walking down the street To see the chimmy-tops smoking on the skyline Feel the cobble stones hard beneath my feet If you could see the town where I was born Stand on the High Street, you can look out to the sea Or take a drink from a friendly corner ale-house A more pleasant place you could never wish to be Oh to hear the women sweetly talking Ah sweet music singing gently in your ear Ah to be back home When you see the rolling hills 'cross the border And the heather smells so sweetly in the air You know that you can't be, (just) can't be anywhere And you feel that magic shiver in your bones You know you're home I hope and pray, nothing's changed since I was there Fond memories still linger in my mind I know that town like a preacher knows his bible And I got to thinking, I'm gonna leave this road behind Really beautiful lyrics ! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Back Home (Bert Jansch) From: GUEST,Marco Date: 15 Nov 04 - 05:59 AM What an amazing news! I think is impossible to find that poster now! Dear guest, if it's possible, could you put on this forum some other lyrics of Bert Jansch? Many, many thanks from a Bert's fan! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Back Home (Bert Jansch) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 16 Nov 04 - 02:38 AM Thanbks GUEST,m. john PS-just out of interest, does anyone know which town he is refering to? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Back Home (Bert Jansch) From: GUEST Date: 17 Nov 04 - 03:52 AM Bert was born in Glasgow, if I'm not wrong, but I don't know if Glasgow is "that" town. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Back Home (Bert Jansch) From: The Borchester Echo Date: 17 Nov 04 - 04:05 AM Bert was born in Glasgow Yes, he was but the family moved to Edinburgh when he was but a few months old. The smoking chimneys sound like Auld Reekie... I tried to get this poster after buying When the Circus Comes To Town a couple of years after it came out but Bert had switched record companies by that time and no-one knew where they'd got to. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Back Home (Bert Jansch) From: GUEST,Van Date: 17 Nov 04 - 02:38 PM It would seem to refer to Edinburgh as you can stand on Carlton hill and see the town surrounded by sea to the north and east. |
