Subject: Shorty is Dead From: Max Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:24 AM Woke up this morning and Shorty was dead. Won't even turn on. Not sure what happened, but it looks like the power supply fried. Technical difficulties may continue for a while, so hang in there. I'm doing what I can. |

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:40 AM Max, what kind of server is Shorty? I just talked to Rog and he might have a spare one, if you can let us know the details. Also, re' the fundraiser idea, Don Meixner has another sterling silver bracelet and earrings in the auction, phoaks, so...bid high and bid often!*bg* Get well, Shorty...kat |

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Max Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:43 AM We're up for a grant for the replacement. Not sure when that is gonna happen, but I have a backup plan that I'm gonna try right now. I'm gonna swap hard drives with my primary workstation Jah, which is a very similar machine, and hope that shorty doesn't care about the brain stransplant (or body transplant). Only downside is that I lose Jah until I get a new power supply. Hell of a morning, Shorty died, my phones are down, my cel-phone is dead. Had to run across the street to my friends house to call work and tell them I'd be late. "Hey, Mr. bossman, Um, I'm gonna be late because, Um, well, Shorty died and I need to do a brain transplant on him, then Um, I can come to work." |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Sorcha Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:47 AM LOL! Sorry Max, some days are just like that, even in Australia. Worst part is, aren't all the searches on Shorty? |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: CapriUni Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:50 AM awww... sad to hear. May he be resurrected. (Then, will he be known as Max's monster? [a la Frankenstien's monster]) Here's to a soon, and long second life! I was going to start work today on a project I'm planning on submitting to the Auction... this is just more incentive to get cracking! |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Max Date: 10 Jun 02 - 12:03 PM Shorty is not really a server. It's just a 300Mhz PC running NT 4.0. Needed to be replaced years ago. We've had so many problems this year (Mail Server got hacked, DNS server got hacked, Domain Controller (and new Mail Server) is crashing every day and is apparently sending our email addresses to spammers, Shorty died, Credit Card processor hard drive failed, Jah crashed and won't let me install a new OS, busted water pipes in the server room AKA my dining room...) that I'm ready to outsource this whole damn thing. Problem is, that not many hosts are willing to host a 1GB database and a site that gets 2 million hits per month at any reasonable price. I'm tired, but I love the Mudcat, and will continue to do whatever it takes to keep this puppy humming. No need for anything special, just keep the contributions and auction trickling and everything will work out. It seems that I have not been able to afford to keep up with necessary upgrades to prevent hardware failure and hacks. They are beating us right now. The grants will buy us a new server and allow me to hire a guy to get our Mail/DNS server back in shape and safe from hackers. Oh, and I just spent the weekend with Pene Azul and was reminded of how hard he works on the Mudcat. Let me just say THANK YOU Pene, for you dedication and hard work, never asking anything in return. And thank you for your friendship which is equally undying and true. I, for one, am lucky to know you. We were gonna make the upgrade happen today, but now, delayed once again. Should be soon though (flamers and trolls laugh here). When you all see it, you too will know the power of the Blue Penis. |

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: GUEST,Ms. Gullible Date: 10 Jun 02 - 12:51 PM 2 million hits per month While I'm sure Mudcat is a very popular site, even gullible me finds it hard to believe that it gets 2 million hits a month. That breaks down to an average of 66,666 hits per day. Even with Spaw on DSL and hitting every post, that's a stretch. |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Max Date: 10 Jun 02 - 12:57 PM It's a fact Jack. |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:07 PM I'm with gullible... (I'm ribbin' ya Max... that's all...) |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: DMcG Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:13 PM Max: Have you looked at replacing the power supply? They only cost about UKP20 (plus two hours sweat and toil) Or - a bit easier - the whole cabinet for about UKP50? I don't know how happy you are playing with the hardware side of things ... |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: GUEST Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:18 PM Clinton and Gullible, I think you misunderstand what a 'hit' means. It doesn't mean 'visitor' or 'page view' This page (and most others) have two graphics and some text. That makes 3 hits - the server being asked for 3 files. Think about how many pages you look at in a day and the figure isn't hard to understand. (Everytime you 'refresh' the index page, that's another 3 hits) |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Dead Horse Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:34 PM It's still more hits than Tyson got the other day, and he was out for the count! Question: Is Jah a Teutonic machine, or a Bob Marley clone? |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: kendall Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:34 PM Sounds like the ultimate blues song,.." Well, I didn't wake up this mornin'" |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Jun 02 - 02:37 PM That's not what I read 'hits' as, but I can see yer point... I guess that's one way to count 'em... Seems artificially inflated to me... I guess I think of it more in terms of my site for instance... I have a counter on my main page that counts the number of different IPs that cross (It resets at some point so if someone comes back after a given amount of time, they get counted again, but if they come RIGHT back, it only counts as one hit) it which sorta gives me an accurate count of how many people are crossing my site in a given week or month... That's how I think of 'hits' I guess it's just a question of deffinitions eh... ;-)

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: CarolC Date: 10 Jun 02 - 06:03 PM I have a couple of auction questions. It's taken me almost two years to figure out that I might have something to contribute in the auction. I have some pen and ink wildlife illustrations that I've done over the years (more of the photo-realistic variety than the artistic variety). I can have prints made of them and put them in the auction if anyone would be interested. But I think I would need to send copies by snail mail to someone who could scan them into a computer if I was going to provide pictures of them on-line for people to view before bidding. So the questions are: would anyone be interested in having something like that in the auction, and would anyone be willing to scan them into a computer so people can see what they look like? |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Jun 02 - 06:39 PM OK, so now I understand why I got messages saying that the Mudcat service had been withdrawn. But I never used to be a junkie until I got hooked on the Mudcat forum, and having the plug pulled is a kind of bereavement, even when it's only temporary. Best wishes for getting it fixed. |

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Max Date: 10 Jun 02 - 10:04 PM Shorty lives. I took the power supply from a dead Aptiva of former elf Rob's and swapped it into Shorty. Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Jun 02 - 12:42 AM I tried sending a response earlier, but got the message that the service had been withdrawn. I'm glad to see you were able to swap out power supplies. I wanted to tell you that they're cheap, around $30 and up, here in Texas at Fry's. They have a lot of inexpensive computer innards also. I think they're in several states now. I used to first see them as a grocery chain in Arizona. Go figure. CompUSA has an arrangement where if you pay them $100 it's good for a year (this is my info as of last year) and they'll put together the components for you in whatever computer, wherever you bought the stuff. So you might want to head to Fry's for the parts and CompUSA if you need to have something built (inexpensive, NOT cheap!) to replace Shorty. SRS |

Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: CapriUni Date: 11 Jun 02 - 01:44 PM Naemanson -- I don't think it's the "Death" of a computor that scared us so much, per se, but the loss of connection with the real, organic people which we've met using said computer -- it was the sudden, unexepected and and unexplained isolation from our community. That's why solitary confinement is the harshest punishment you can lay on people... |

Lightning forks down out of the heavens as a possessed Max screams "Give my creation life, LIFE, LIIIIFFFEEEEEEE." Moments later Shorty belches, whirrs, and resumes. Max bellows "It's ALIIIIIIIVE". Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Jon Freeman Date: 12 Jun 02 - 08:04 PM Max, I don't know how serious you are about outsourcing but I've tried to do some "shopping" for you. I have come across this page that may be of interest to you. They offer "unlimited badwidth" (although I'm always a little suspicious as to how unlimited "unlimited" is), 30Gb disk storage, 2Gb SQL Server space, Cold Fusion 5 and other things for $400 per month and down to $333 per month if a way was found to pay 12 months. I don't know how practical it is but it may be worth following up on as at first glance, it appears that it may be possible for you to host Mudcat and other site(s?) OnStage Media host and share resources with Mudcat for at worst no more cost than your estimate at $400 for Mudcat alone and to host it on new servers (dual PIII 1Ghz) and have no worries about hardaware. There are probably hidden drawbacks though, some of which I dobut that I would know enough to see and mine (if I'm allowed a worry) would be the loss of control if something like another Harry Fox issue cropped up - I may be wrong but it always seems to me that the easy option for the ISP holding the data would be to pull the plug. Jon |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Jun 02 - 01:03 PM Thanks, Kat! Several of us have suggested sites for replacement buying parts, and there may be ways to recycle used computers for some of what Max is trying to do. Is there a laundry list anywhere of the equipment that is needed that we could individually shop around and report back on? I wouldn't mind making a trip to Fry's if it would be helpful. SRS |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: katlaughing Date: 14 Jun 02 - 01:33 PM Thanks, Susanne! Yer welcome, SRS! Charley, I, too, think that is a GREAT idea! |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Gareth Date: 14 Jun 02 - 06:47 PM Err Max, like what sort of money is we talking about ? Gareth |
Subject: RE: Shorty is Dead From: Jon Freeman Date: 15 Jun 02 - 08:32 AM Gareth, if you are reffering to "shorty equivilant", Max indicated that shorty was just a plain 300Mhz PC which is something you'd have to shop second hand to find. I would imagine that any new entry level PC - say about £350 (probably $350 the way prices on these things work) should far exceed shorty's capabilities - you can get a Duron 1.2Ghz with 256Mb RAM for that sort of money... That said, I don't know what Max would be thinking in terms of but I would guess it would make more sense to try to invest rather more than that... Jon |
