Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when I set out for glory From: wysiwyg Date: 12 Jun 02 - 09:05 AM I don't have it in any of my collections of trad gospel lyrics, though that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Masato, do you have it on any of your other discography? losthwy, if you liked this you might also like one by Mudcatters Keith & Susan in California, "Would You?". ~Susan |

1632 CD CUT 12, "WHEN I SET OUT FOR GLORY" COMP TRAD, ARR TIME & MOLLIE O'BRIEN & THE O'BOYS
This review says: "The album [Tell It True ] ends with its other traditional piece, a plaintive gospel tune called When I Set Out for Glory, a further example of how Mollie and Tim O'Brien can put imagination and freshness into an old song, helped all the more by the outstanding musicianship."
I don't have the CD nor lyrics, but judging from another sound clip this seems to be the one (from this page):
"When I set out for glory, I left this world behind, ~Masato |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when I set out for glory From: GUEST,losthwy Date: 12 Jun 02 - 02:08 PM thanks to all of you. Now, if I can just find the Mollie O'Brien tape I'm sure I once had! Or spring for a new CD. Still interested if anyone has any origin info beyond traditional white gospel. Could it be Civil War era? thanks again, losthwy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when I set out for glory From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Jun 02 - 05:33 PM Any relation to "Streets of Glory"? (In DT) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when I set out for glory From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Jun 02 - 06:14 PM From Chapter 4, Uncle Tom's Cabin: O I'm going to glory- won't you come along with me? Don't you see the angels beck'ning and a calling me away? Don't you see the golden city and the everlasting day? (I haven't seen this one, of which this is a fragment, on any listing of spirituals) A gospel song, "I'm Going To Glory," was recorded by the "Gospeleers, pre-1940, available on Document Records, DOCD 5553. Neither one may be related to the Molly O'Brien song, but the titles express the same thought, that the singer is fixin' to go to glory. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when I set out for glory From: GUEST,Uncle Fred Date: 10 Aug 11 - 08:59 PM The verse-
Do not be discouraged, for Jesus is your friend, was used in a hymn called the Sunday School Army by John A Grenade who was perhaps the original 'tent revival' preacher. Around 1785 to 1805. The Sunday school army movement(medals for perfect attendance in SS.)was popular at the time but didn't originate with Grenade, who was known as the Wild Man from Goose Creek. I think he may have adapted the old hymn and it's melody from somewhere else, I'm not sure. We need to ask Jean Ritchie about this, if anybody, she would know.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN I SET OUT FOR GLORY (1830) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Aug 11 - 12:51 AM From The Camp-Meeting Chorister, Or, A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs... (Philadelphis: J. Clarke, 1830), page 306: HYMN 381. P. M. 1. When I set out for glory, I left the world behind, Determin'd for a city, That's out of sight to find. CHORUS: And to glory I will go— And to glory I will go—I'll go, I'll go. And to glory I will go. 2. I left my worldly honour— I left my worldly fame— I left my young companions And with them my good name. 3. Some said I'd better tarry— They thought I was too young For to prepare for dying:— But that was all my theme. 4. Come all my loving brethren, And listen to my cry; All you that are backsliders Must shortly beg or die. CHORUS: And to begging I will go— And to begging I will go—will go, will go, And to begging I will go. 5. The Lord he loves the beggar, Who truly begs indeed; He always will relieve him Whene'er he stands in need. 6. I do not beg for riches. Nor to be dressed fine: The garment that he'll give me, The sun it will outshine. 7. I'm not asham'd to beg While here on earth I stay; I'm not asham'd to watch— And I'm not asham'd to pray. 8. The richest man I ever saw Was one that begg'd the most; His soul was fill'd with Jesus, And with the Holy Ghost. 9. And now we are encouraged, Come let us travel on Until we join the angels, And sing the holy song. CHORUS: And to glory I will go, &c. |
