About a million years ago Folkways and Elektra put out a four Record (remember them) set called the Folk Box. In my youthful enthusiasm I played it until it was no more. It was a great collection that I would once again like to have-problem is it is out of print. I would really like it in the little tiny shiny records, but I don't think that Elektra will do that for me. Any ideas how to proceed?

Well, here is a link to Smithsonian Folkways, but I don't think they're going to have what you're looking for. They have a lot of good stuff, and you can get CD or cassette copies of anything that was ever in the Folkways catalogue. The fact that Elektra was involved puts a different spin on it. for some reason, Elektra has been stingy in releasing folk reissues. It's a shame, since they had so much.
I few years back, I picked up a nifty 1984 Elektra/Asylum cassette collection called Bleecker and MacDougal, the Folk Scene of the 1960's. It has all sorts of wonderful stuff I haven't seen anywhere else - Fred Neil, Oscar Brand, Erik Darling, Judy Henske, Eric Weissberg, and lots more. Knowing the quality of pre-recorded cassettes, I doubt that this collection will last me very long. I wish it were available on CD, and that Elektra would reissue recordings by these artists.

I did a search at the folkways site and didn't find anything like Folk Box or variants. I think Joe is right about them not putting it out.

Joe. Have you ever thought of keeping your tape as a "master" and making a copy for everyday playing? When that one wears out, make another copy, etc. That way the original will last a long time (perhaps even longer than a CD which is made of more perishable material, I think.)

I don't know anything about copyright laws, so note that the above is a question, not a suggestion ;-).

Also, it looks like pretty soon the price of a CD recorder to be driven by a home computer will get reasonable. They were over two-thousand here in Australia two years ago and now they are under one-thousand.

Yup, Murray, I did think about making an everyday use copy. I used the originals only once, to make my copies. Still, prerecorded cassettes are often made on cheap tapes, and they tend to bleed through from one layer of tape to the next, and develop squawks in the mechanism.
But then, after I got well along in my collection of CD's, I learned that CD's tend to lose their information after 15-20 years. Maybe the vinyl enthusiasts were right after all.
