Subject: Collector discography From: Phillip Date: 15 Jun 02 - 10:58 AM I'm trying to put together a discography of the Collector label. This is what I have so far, listed by prefix, rather than straight chronology:
1960 Prices Can anyone supply any more information? Rgds Phillip |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: RolyH Date: 15 Jun 02 - 04:08 PM A fine collection! The only addition I can find in the listings is a single JDS 3 Football Crazy/Rosin the Beau by Robin Hall (which was re-issued on Decca) I've got JES 12 listed as "Robin Hall" and then JES 13 listed as "Robin Hall Sings Again" Wish I had more of these , but I've only got two (JEB 2 and JFS 4002) Thanks |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: johnross Date: 16 Jun 02 - 12:45 AM A quick look through my collection finds one slightly different itle and another item: JEA 1 Sandy Paton American Folk Songs Volume 1 JEA 6 Rambing Jack Elliott Blues 'N' Country Horst Pohle's very useful (if not absolutely difinitive) "The Folk Record Source Book: England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales" (self-published, 1984) lists this item not on your list: JEB 7 Four Sussex Singers (George Spicer & ?) It appears that the numbering series on the 7" EPs identified the country whose music was on each records: JEB British JEI Irish JES Scots JEA American |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Sandy Paton Date: 16 Jun 02 - 12:49 AM My God, that was forty-four years ago! Grandpa Sandy |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Hrothgar Date: 16 Jun 02 - 05:33 AM Pretend that it was YOUR grandpa, Sandy. |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Stefan Wirz Date: 16 Jun 02 - 09:52 AM JEA 5 (EP 1960) Rambling[!] Jack Elliott: Muleskinners (Muleskinners, San Francisco Bay, Alabama Bound, Talking Blues); see my RJE discography There's also a picture of JEA 6 (Rambling[!] Jack Elliott: Blues 'n' Country)! |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 16 Jun 02 - 03:47 PM I well remember when I had every one of those. Still have a few but I wish I'd kept 'em all. Moral - don't sell your records, and keep an eye on those you lend out. |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Thomas Stern Date: 16 May 03 - 01:08 PM I wonder what progress has been made on this discography and if the results are available. Do you know who started the label, and what the current status is? Are the masters preserved? Thanks, Thomas Stern. |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Stefan Wirz Date: 16 May 03 - 01:59 PM another addition has to be JEN 4 'Poor Joe Williams - a man sings the blues ..' (Big Joe Williams discography) wonder what the 'N' in JEN stands for - I'm afraid it stands for 'Negro' (but those were the early 60s: 'A' for 'American', 'N' for 'Negro') |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Stefan Wirz Date: 16 May 03 - 02:01 PM not to forget Collector JEN 3 'Poor Boy Williams' |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Phillip Date: 30 Dec 05 - 10:33 AM I still occasionally try and find more to add to the Collector Records discography I started years ago. (And thanks for all the additions since my first posting.) Two curious ones I came across recently were JEN 2 Kenny Ball and His Band - Hiawatha Rag, and JEC 507 Hugo Dalton - same. I believe Dalton (or perhaps D'Alton) was a mandolin player, so the JEC series could be C for classical. Or it could be a different label altogether! |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Phillip Date: 30 Dec 05 - 10:50 AM Oh, and Nigel Gatherer has some small icons of the Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor records if you wanted to see them. http://www.nigelgatherer.com/perf.html |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Matthew Edwards Date: 30 Dec 05 - 01:01 PM JEB 7 "4 Sussex Singers" made from field recordings by Mervyn Plunkett, includes:- I Wish There Was No Prisons - George Spicer Polly On The Shore - Pop Maynard The Sprig of Thyme - Jean Hopkins Barbara Allen - Jim Wilson ***************************** At the VWML I've heard a recording of All Jolly Fellows that Follow the Plough sung by Ernest Collins, Great Budworth, Cheshire which was issued on an EP "English Country Songs" Collectors Limited Edition CLE1. These were from field recordings made by Mike Yates and Sybil Taylor in 1964-65. [See the National Sound Archive catalogue NSA under the catalogue number 1SE0044333 for full details.] Also on the same record were: The nutting girl by Ernest Yates from Marsden, West Riding of Yorkshire The blackbird's nest by John Cantwell from Standlake, Oxon Down the green groves by Fred Jordan of Craven Arms, Shropshire. Here's luck to all my cocks & hens by Frank Rose from Swinbrook, Oxon. Also in the NSA catalogue [1SE0044334] is "The Soul Cakers of Cheshire" Collectors' Limited Edition CLE2. I don't know whether these were part of the same series, though the index numbers would suggest not. |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Phillip Date: 01 Jan 06 - 06:39 AM Thanks for the link to the NSA, Matthew. I found a couple more on their catalogue. I suspect there will be others there, but the search engine is a nightmare! I kept getting incomprehensible error messages, even when just trying to move on to the next page. |
Subject: RE: Collector discography From: Thomas Stern Date: 05 Dec 06 - 01:50 PM Hello Phillip, I would like to get a copy of your COLLECTOR discography. Does it list songs? Thanks, Thomas. |

Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: GUEST Date: 02 Oct 08 - 07:52 AM I have a much more complete discography than this for anyone interested. I have been researching the history of this label for some considerable time and have most (not all!) of the records on the label. The oldest records are the JEL (L) prefix which indicated a Jazz source. You are right about the codes used A = American B = British (English!) S = Scots I = Irish P = Political (Oddball) C = Classical (more oddball) N = Negro L = Jazz There was another set of codes which explains the variation in letters used. The central letter was used to indicate size of format. Thus:- D = single E = EP F = 10" G = 12" Sandy Paton recorded the first 3 records on the JEA series - JEA1, JEA2 & JEA3. Colin Pomroy was the man behind the label with the help of Paul Carter often as the inspiration with the folky recordings. Bernard Mattimore was also often involved as an engineer. Any more information required, please contact me. Alistair_Banfield being at the hotmail variety of com see above for email contact :-) |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: Fred McCormick Date: 02 Oct 08 - 10:21 AM I don't think this one has been mentioned before. Apologies if it has. However, Prison Worksongs LP Collector JGN 1006 consists of field recordings made in the Louisiana State Pentientary, Angola made by Harry Oster about 1959. The disc also appeared on Oster's own label (Folklyric?) before being reissued by Chris Strachwitz. The tracks are currently available on Prison Worksongs Recorded at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, L.A. Arhoolie CD 448. |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Oct 08 - 11:46 AM Are any of these recordings available on CD or MP3? I see that Smithsonian has a Collector label, but I think it's a different one. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: GUEST,Alistair Banfield Date: 09 Oct 08 - 02:57 PM The Collector in the name gives rise to confusion. The CLE "collector's limited edition" refers to a short-lived set of very limited issues by the wonderful Mike Yates. There is a collector label in America, Collectors editions relating to Jazz and the word "collector" in several other labels. Only the English label has the JEC1 sort of catalogue numbering system so that should help you work out which is the work of the Colin Pomroy label and which isn't. As you may have worked out - the existence of JGN1006 (see above) requires the other catalogue numbers JGN1001, JGN1002, JGN1003, JGN1004 & JGN1005 to have already been allocated. They were! Memphis Slim (with Alexis Korner), Charlie Parker, & Speckled Red were amongst the artists on these other records. Blind Blake had a 10" record issued For the real obsessives - There was another label owned by the same company called "Range". They had a very few issues of Country & Blues related material. Happy hunting! Alistair Banfield alistair_banfield at hotmail dot com |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 09 Oct 08 - 03:29 PM The Collector label in the U.S. was the company started by Joe Glazer. There were some great recordings issued on that label, including Magpie and a number of labor-oriented albums. |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: johnross Date: 09 Oct 08 - 09:17 PM Alistair, do you (or anybody else) know who owns the rights to the Collector catalogue? Even better, do you know where the master tapes are? It might be an interesting project to assemble some CD reissues. It should be noted that the technical quality on some of those old EPs is quite dreadful. I recently listened to a couple, and they have a huge amount of tape hiss, even for the late 1950s. |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: GUEST,Alistair Banfield Date: 24 Oct 08 - 09:08 PM To be honest, I don't know who owns the material. I've had some conversations that suggest that the material was often released without any permission from the artists. Certainly I'd doubt if many royalties were ever paid. The early Jack Elliott and Guy Carawan recordings were actually from "77" label records and put on eps from the 10" LPs 77 had just issued. They were both on Charing Cross Road at a certain time, although Collector moved out to Greenford a little later in its life. I'll ask Shirley Collins next time I see her as maybe she knows. You're right it would be good to issue some of this material on CD. Jimmie MacGregor may know too and I'm in touch with him so I'll ask him next time I speak. I wonder if the masters still exist? I have some excellent copies of most of the catalogue and certainly good enough to work with. Alistair Banfield |

Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: brezhnev Date: 04 May 09 - 04:00 AM it's only a footnote, but the dates in general circulation for the Shirley Collins EPs on Collector (1964) seem to be wrong. JEB3 The Foggy Dew was reviewed in the Gramophone magazine in Feb 1960 (along with the Sweet England LP that came out in 1959). JEB5 English Songs was reviewed in the Gramophone in February 1961 and the reviewer said it was "not one of their (Collector's) most recent issues. Can't find any reviews of JEB9 (English Songs vol 2) or JEI1508 (Shirley Sings Irish), but they (and the above) were all recorded apparently at the same 1958/59 sessions produced in London by Paul Carter. |

Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography From: Reinhard Date: 17 Jul 09 - 02:56 PM brezhnev, today I got a copy of JEB9 (Shirley Collins, English Songs vol 2). The record label states ¡ÈC.R. Recording First Published 1964". Also, the fonts and typography on the record label of JEB9 is quite different from that of JEB2 (Steve Benbow's Folk Four), JEB3 (Shirley Collins, The Foggy Dew) and JEB8 (A.L. Lloyd, England and Her Folk Songs, 1962) which are the only other Collector JEB EPs that I own. Is it plausible that Collector released this EP four years later than JEB3 and JEB5 (Shirley Collins, English Songs)? |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography (UK) From: GUEST,Alistair Banfield Date: 17 Mar 10 - 02:51 PM As an update to this thread, you may have thought that the "N" category didn't fit "Negro" since Kenny Ball is certainly not in that racial category. I have since been told that it almost certainly stood for "New". This is still not exactly definitive but Collector was originally "Jazz Collector" and issued 78rpm discs which were copied from American 78s. So the blues recordings and Kenny Ball Jazz were "New Jazz" to the directors of the record company at the time. Hope this clears up any earlier confusion. Also there was a classical section, a spoken voice section and an odds and sodds section which included political & obscure such as steel band and flamenco. What variety! Somehow reminds me of Argo's output. alistair_banfield at hotmail dot com |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography (UK) From: brezhnev Date: 18 Mar 10 - 01:23 PM Alistair, the only one of the 'odds and sods' section i've come across is a 1961 single by Ronnie Cass and Peter Myers doing a song about 'Lady Chatterley" and another about the ads displayed in shop windows by prostitutes "Police Notice". Have you got any details of others? |

I thought folks here might like to see what we've got as a discography so far here... http://www.45cat.com/label/collector-records If anyone could fill in any gaps or even better add images it would be greatly appreciated. : ) |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography (UK) From: GUEST,Alistair Banfield Date: 27 Nov 12 - 09:22 AM Hi everyone. I'm still researching this label and occasionally still filling in gaps. Remember that there were more than just 45rpm singles and EPs. There were 12" Lps, 10" Lps, 7" Eps, 7" singles, 78rpm singles and some singles in the late 1950s/early 1960s which were issued in both 78rpm and 45rpm formats. It'll be a lifetime before anything near complete is assembled. alistair_banfield at hotmail dot com |

Are there any reissues of any other of the Collector releases ?? Has anyone determined if the master tapes are extant ?? Thanks! Thomas. |
Subject: RE: 'Collector' label discography (UK) From: Reinhard Date: 17 May 15 - 12:13 AM Thomas, WING 1002 English Songs was a Record Store Day reissue on April 18 of this year as you said.
