Subject: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 17 Jun 02 - 04:50 AM Carolynne and I are going to Tas for a break arriving Hobart Fri evening 12/7 dep sun morn 21/7 Yes I know not long enough. but needs must. What's happening where? Regards Ted Burns (Cairns) |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Hrothgar Date: 17 Jun 02 - 06:14 AM Winter is what is happening down there. Do you know what there is between Tasmania and the Antarctic? Roy Orbison, that's what. They are really nice people, though, despite the two heads. Best of luck. |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Terry K Date: 17 Jun 02 - 06:48 AM - are they known as Tasmaniacs? If Hobart on a Saturday night is anything to go by, they should be. It's like redneck youngsters use the city centre as a racetrack, USA 1950's style! Hrothgar, why do I not get the Orbison reference? cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 17 Jun 02 - 07:20 AM Ok Ok I know it's Cold and I know it's winter, but there must be some Taswegians out there doing music. Martin are you there? Regards Ted |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: rich-joy Date: 17 Jun 02 - 08:15 AM I think Martin Pearson went to Melbourne ... But Mike Manhire and Mick Flannagan are still down there ... Ted, why not contact Beth at "Celtic Southern Cross" on their website (where they sell instruments and tutors and CDs etc) - I'm sure they could help ... Hrothgar, this could be a bit embarrassing, but, not only do I have distant EnZed rellies, I also have quite close Taswegian rellies ... (still, we Sandgropers always were a little different - that's why we've tried to secede from the rest of Oz 3 times in the country's short white history!!!) Cheers! R-J

Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Bob Bolton Date: 17 Jun 02 - 08:36 AM G'day Ted & Rich Joy, Beth is probably the handiest (certainly the easiest) contact for this ... Mike,Mick & Beth are all up in the north ... but Beth should know what's going on for the whole isle. (Actually, if you were crossing the Bass Strait by the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, you might bump into Mick stewarding on the boat ... but I presume that you are flying ... ?) I had some good sessions down the Huon Valley (below Hobart) in ebruary ... maybe that's where the indigent folkies head , for the cheaper living (a bit like the Blue Mts, vis a vis Sydney). Regards, Bob Bolton BTW: Terry K - They are Taswegians if they were born there ... they are only Tasmaniacs if, like me in the '60s, they went of their own free will! |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 17 Jun 02 - 09:31 AM Thanks Bob & RJ. I'll try tomorrow when my head is not spinning from watching Brazil thrash Belgium. Regards Ted |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Mrrzy Date: 17 Jun 02 - 05:16 PM I have a Tasmanian brother-in-law - I'll ask around. |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Bill D Date: 17 Jun 02 - 11:56 PM wish *I* was going...I love Huon Pine as a turning wood, and Leatherwood honey...and ANY of the music... |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: GUEST,ozmacca Date: 18 Jun 02 - 12:07 AM Tasmania?........... In JULY!!!!!!! What the name of the blue blind blistering blazes is anybody in their right mind doing, going to TASMANIA in WINTER? FROM CAIRNS??????? Listen Ted, sit down fer a coupla minutes and cool yer fevered brow.... Then go see your GP, or better yet, your shrink. It might not be too late. Medication's a wonderful thing these days. But if you must travel south, fer gawd's sake, geroff the plane at Brissie and spend a couple of weeks in a climate that won't be too..... well, not to put too fine a point on it... British. We've got music round here, and it'll be warmer than having yer socks freeze to yer feet. Repent this mad scheme before it is too late! |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 18 Jun 02 - 02:53 AM OxMacca. I have been hopelessly indoctrinated by Monty Python. Whenever I get a chance to get away from the tropical paradise that is Cairns, into my bewilderd brain swirls the imperitave command "NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" (my last break (10 years ago I went to England and Canada for XMAS. I expect Tas to be quite mild) BTW why does anyone live in Bris - It's neither chalk nor cheese.Even if the music may be great ;-)> Come on up and see us sometime. Regards Ted |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 18 Jun 02 - 02:56 AM Oops sorry ozmacca |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Hrothgar Date: 18 Jun 02 - 03:33 AM Terry K Roy Orbison = the big O = zero. i don't take credit for that - I heard it from Bogle. |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: ozmacca Date: 18 Jun 02 - 06:23 AM Well, I dunno mate. I reckon yer've been out in the sun a bit too long. Stone me, no wonder yer want to go to Tassie.... the heat must've addled yer grey matter if yer went ter Canadia, where all them bleedin' Canadians come from, and Pomland an' all... fer Chrissie, fer cryin' out loud... No wonder yer carn't bleedin' well spell. An' as fer why anyone would want ter live here in Brissie, the capital of Godzone, the jewel of the south-east, the centre of the known universe an' the very essence of all that is free an' decent, and demo-bleedin'-cratic, well mate...... All I can say is yer've never lived till yer've had a few days in the sun-kissed paradise we've got down here. Geez, cobber, ye'd have ter be flat out like a lizard drinkin' ter find a better spot fer a holiday, or ter live. Chalk or cheese, eh? Well, lemme tell yer we've got the best bleedin' cheese this side o the Black Stump down here, and as fer chalk, well, our bleedin' chalk the best in the bleedin' world, innit.
Do you think the tourist bureau of investigation will be satisfied with that, Ted? Have a nice time in Tassie.... I won't tell my better half, she'd have me on a plane there like a shot. Brrrrrrrrrrrr..... |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: GUEST,John Gray @ work Date: 18 Jun 02 - 11:32 PM Tassie - a top spot anytime of the year. Great beer and the world's best cider and vegetables that still taste like vegetables. And wonderful oily baked mutton birds and honey to kill for and curried sea scallops that you'd sell the wife for and - and - and don't go there if you are watching your waistline. JG / FME |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Bob Bolton Date: 19 Jun 02 - 12:07 AM G'day John Gray, Ah ... you've just explained what I couldn't explain earlier this morning. I was looking over my medical record with my GP and she noted that my blood sugar levels, declining nicely since I was diagnosed with mild Type 2 diabetes early last year - and buckled down to dietary and exercise improvements, were back up over 8.0 when last tested ... March 2002. Now, I had spent the previous month roaming around Tasmania, visiting in-laws and enjoying the local provender ... Oh well, back to The GI Book (Diabetes Australia's bible) and the 6 km walk home every night. (And plan next year's holidays for somewhere less tasty!) Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Ted from Australia Date: 20 Jun 02 - 09:21 AM Thanx to all who responded, I was able to get in touch with Beth who gave me http://www.tased.edu.au/tasonline/folkfed which has a wealth of info on the Tas scene ozmacca I will see you in the summer when i need to escape the heat. Regards Ted |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 20 Jun 02 - 11:21 AM Bob, that begs the question. What do they call the ones to go there NOT of their own free will? |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: GUEST,ozmacca Date: 20 Jun 02 - 06:16 PM Intelligent...... |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Bob Bolton Date: 21 Jun 02 - 08:18 AM G'day George Seto, Indeed, that question came up in the (c. 1966) discussion from which I got the other terms. The young lady, who had come out with her family at age 14 said: What about us English that did not come out willingly?" and I replied: "Convicts!" Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Going to Tasmania From: Mrrzy Date: 24 Jun 02 - 01:51 PM OK, I've checked with my Tazzy relative, whose best advice is to go to a tourist site and ask them. Great help, thanks a lot, I thought! |
