Subject: RE: OBIT: Paul Furey dies From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Jun 02 - 01:57 PM I think it's worthwhile posting the obituary information from the site referred to above, http://www.rte.ie/ace/2002/0617/fureys.html -Joe Offer- 17/06/2002 Furey's accordian player dies, aged 54 Paul Furey, the accordion player and youngest member of the folk group, The Fureys, has died aged 54. He died last night at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin after a short illness. From Ballyfermot in Dublin, the eldest members of the Furey clan, Eddie and Finbar were responsible for bringing the uillean pipes to international attention during the folk music revival of the 1960s. Joined by Paul and George, The Fureys and Davey Arthur enjoyed an unexpected British Top 20 hit in 1981 with the song, 'When You Were Sweet Sixteen'. Paul is survived by his wife Catherine, their three sons and his brothers - Eddie, Finbar and George. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Paul Furey dies From: Dave4Guild Date: 17 Jun 02 - 02:50 PM Tragic news indeed. So many of us in Coventry remember Paul and the other Fureys in The Dyer's Arms in the 70's, and all the wonderful sessions that were held there. The end of an era, perhaps, as well as the loss of a dear friend? My condolences to all the family. Dave Bennett |

I sometimes think it was happening all around me and I never got to see half of it! Goodnight and God's Speed Mr Furey. |

The Furey's were such a major part of my growing up - I was so glad to see them in concert in Melbourne a few years back. At family gatherings we sang their songs, Steal Away was played at my uncle's funeral. Sadly missed. Allie |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Paul Furey dies From: Fiolar Date: 18 Jun 02 - 08:47 AM So sad - the ranks of the great entertainers continue to be thinned. I saw the group in Norwich many years ago. The words of the Celtic blessing seem appropriate here. "May the earth rest easy on you, when at last you lie under it. May the earth rest so lightly over you, that your spirit may be out from under it quickly; Amd up, and off and on its way to God." |
