Thanks for the link. We tried the glossary and it's terrific. We're reading Stephen J. Gould's "The Structure of Evolutionary Theory" and he has sent us to the dictionary many times. Some of the words he uses were not in our (hard to lift) dictionary but they were clearly explained in Google's glossary. Like "clade". Or "anagenesis".

Whew! I was afraid the sentence was going to continue, "Google is experimenting with charging for their service." It would only have surprised me a little.

Aloha,
Mark

Interesting, Bill, thanks. That's one reason why I like google so much, they are always tweaking it. A few weeks ago, I happened upon a new service they offer. A person offers to pay anywhere from fifty cents on up to have a query answered by a live support person, who gets paid a percentage of every answer they provide. I found it under "jobs" on their main search page, I think. It's an interesting concept.

Well I hope it works better than an image search I did awhile back. I was looking for apicture fo a camel and got presented with one of Bill Clinton. Not sure why.

The search engine must have gotten confused about the word "hump"....

And note that first definition they've got on vegemite (from New Zealand too): "Popular marmite-like spread..."

Yes, Vegemite *insert distasteful shudder* is the spread of choice across the ditch in Australia. Didn't you know we're the more British of the two? *grin*

Allie

P.S. Mark, hadn't thought of that!

Because they're both well known for their humps?

If you like the Google glossary, try Atomica instead. Once you've installed their free client, all you have to do is put your mouse pointer over any word on your screen (in any program) hold the Alt key and click. A small window will pop up giving a complete dictionary entry and links to other information about the term. There is even an audio example for pronunciation. You can also use it to check spelling in cases where no spell checker is available—link a Mudcat posting window. It includes Thesaursus entries in most cases. The dictionary used is the The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. It's not the OED but it's pretty handy.

They include words like “clade” and “anagenesis” as well.

You don't have to use Atomica as a popup, you can also just open the Atomica AnswerBar with a single click and type in any word you'd like.

The Atomica client does more than just provide the definition, it also seems to evaluate the context in which the word is found. This lets it do a better job of finding the correct definition and even correctly identify terms that are more than a single word in length.

Try it, you'll like it. I'd even pay for this one if they required it.

Don't know what went wrong Daniel but I just now held down my Alt key and clicked on the word 'DNS' in your post and got a wonderful definition from Atomica's Technology section complete with color diagrams of the ISO 7-layer model and the relationship between networked components using DNS.

I have installed and registered the Atomica client, I don't know whether that makes a difference or not.

LOL, Mark,

I'm not called Daniel! That was what Atomica came up with as the definition.

I did use the website, mind. I'll try the download

Jim

Oops, sorry Jim. I was going to call you Jim but then I decided maybe it was a nom de plume of some kind and Daniel was your signature. The last guy I remember named Jim Jones got hold of some bad cool-aid down in Guyana.

When you get Atomica installed, come back and Alt-click on the word plume in the preceding paragraph. You'll see that even though plume is a word, Atomica looks at context and figures out that you're asking about “nom de plume.”

We tried the Google Set Search. We put in Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Dulcimer, Autoharp. Out came a long list of musical instruments used in traditional music but bodhran wasn't there. My, my, Google is smarter than we thought.

Found by "accident" while debugging my machine this last weekend (McAfee - calendar update spin/log/spin/log)

Just for fun, try this... to discover one of the simple "wizardries" of google. (Don't bother if you don't understand...you are one the pigeons they desire)

1. Go to a DOS prompt (RUN - Command)
2. Go to the WINDOWS root directory (c:\windows) 3. Type in the window NETSTAT -AN

NOW DO THE SAME THING AFTER VISITING GOOGLE.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Sincerely, Gargoyle, I think I'l consider myself a pigeon for this one, and restrain myself. Google obviously already hates me.

allie kiwi
than you for that shudder.
I tried to impress my "honey" with Vegemite as an alternative to her beloved Marmite (I know, she's not perfect but....)
I failed to impress but I do claim dispensation because the only "mitres" I could find had an Oz accent. Wouldna happened if it were Kiwimite, would it? Must get my neice to ship some over for her.
FWIW it is just a choice of yuk versus yuk to me.
