He does an amazing tune on the Private Parts soundtrack called "Tortured Man". Gritty stuff.

I've heard "Tortured Man". While it may deal with themes of existential yearning and working-class angst, I would be hard-pressed to classify it as a folk song. But I could be wrong.

Is Howard Stern considered a folksinger? I consider him to be a small minded, self centered teen age fixated as*hole. I wouldn't be concerned about whether or not he can sing.

I have accidently clicked on his program while zipping thru channels.....it is one program, (like Jerry Springer) that I am embarrassed to watch even while alone!...It is SO juvenile and insipid that I am utterly without words to explain....I would vote it off the air, if I HAD a vote...and I am a pretty liberal guy...

"Tortured Man" is a throwaway song. It's garbage. Word salad. If you consider such tripe worthwhile, you need to update your record collection. Sheesh.

For an alternative (or alternate, as my transatlantic friends would say) view of the merits of Howard Stern, by one of the most respected performers in the American folk scene, check out This link here and click on the article "Doing Howard Stern".

His TV show (which is really a radio show with a TV camera recording everything) is one of these cult things that you either love or hate. I can accept that some people may find it embarrassing or jejune, but I cannot accept that he merits comparison with Jerry Springer or similar exploitative (exploitational?) shows.

Stern is at least unfailingly honest, even if some of his subject matter may be of less than world-shattering importance.

Subject: RE: Is Howard Stern considered a folksinger?
From: GUEST,Janis Ian
Date: 22 Jun 02 - 04:45 AM

Why is it so odd to see Janis Ian laughing with Howard Stern? When he says "Oh Janis, if you'd only slept with the right man you'd be straight" and I reply "Oh Howard, if you'd only slept with the right man you'd be gay" -- and he agrees that there's always the possibilty -- it sends a message to his core demographic of white 15-to-25-year-old males that they get from no one else on radio.

That message is tolerance and acceptance. I have had earnest boys in full hetero drag appear backstage to say that their evening's choice was "between you and Alice In Chains, but you were on Howard so we came here". I've watched an audience comprised mainly of heterosexual couples interact with me, a lesbian, in a positive way. Remember, these are the kids who think all lesbians are fat, ugly man-haters who want penises for Christmas, and all queer men are sissies who couldn't get a girl.

As performers, Howard Stern and I attempt to do exactly the same thing -- to break down the stereotypes.

Sounds pretty folk to me.

-Janis

I don't know much about Howard Stern but I'd like to say to you, Janis Ian. I've been listening to your music since I was a kid and "Send Your Parents to Shady Acres" has been an endless source of amusement to my family since away back. Good to see you here. vl

Janis Ian is a Mudcatter! That definitely puts a hop in my step!

I think she makes a fabulous point, too. I used to look down my nose at Howard Stern, but I now look at him in a different light. I'm going to buy the album where Howard sings "Tortured Man" tomorrow, and I'll chime in with my opinion after listening to it. Stay tuned!

I hate to disillusion all Janis Ian fans, but the post above is not from Janis Ian, but from some miscreant purporting to be her.

The content of the message is accurate, however, being cut and pasted from her website.

Just gave "Tortured Man" a good, hard listen. Considering the comments from Janis Ian, and the working-class themes of the song itself, I would definitely tend to qualify Howard as a folksinger. His voice is far from superb, which is also in the folk tradition.

Howard Stern a folksinger. Who's have thunk it!?!?

Every one who performs a song could be considered or " classified" or marketed as a " folksinger or a jazz singer or a pop singer.....etc, etc, etc .

Does Howard Stern have much redeeming value ( none in my own opinion ), however , in a world that could value a " National Geographic Series " on TV over a show like Howard's ...well " look whose on TV and RADIO everyday.

Is Howard a folksinger compared to Sandy Paton or Janis Ian......not even close.

Mike

Sometimes he makes me laugh, sometimes I turn him off shaking my head. He's a child who has created his own world and has total say as to what goes on in it.

What amazes me is the emotions his silliness has evoked all over America. Just mention his name and the fur flies. So funny.

Am I the only one who's ambivilent(sp?) to this guy?

As I said, sometimes he makes me laugh, and sometimes I turn him off shaking my head.

He is meaningless to anyone, except maybe his poor daughters.

Dear LH, Do you or have you lived in Orilla , Ontario currently or in the past ?

Did you attend a small Folk music Festival a few years ago in the Rochester, New York area and possibly perform in an open mic that we had?

IF so, I was the MC for that entire weekend at that festival.

Well, by gosh... Yes, Mike, I do live in Orillia, did play at the Mariposa festival there 2 years ago, and did play in that festival you mention near Rochester at the open mike stage. Seems to me I did mostly original songs, but I can't remember which ones.
