The impressive lyrics of "Coal Not Dole" are indeed written by Kay Sutcliffe. They've been set to various tunes (as discussed on other Mudcat threads), including a variant of "See Amid the Winter Snow" suggested to Coope Boyes & Simpson by John Tams. Kay's text becomes ever more meaningful by the day.

I recently heard this song being credited to Coope, Boyes & Simpson, and told the singer that, although recorded by CBS, it was written by Kay Sutcliffe. Might be worth contacting Georgina Boyes here

I'd like to use an adapted version of these lyrics in an amateur play - does anyone know how I can get permission to do this?

You're right, Mick, in principle. I had tried the forum search first but without success. I now know why: I had entered coal not dole and got all threads in which the word 'coal' but not the word 'dole' is found. This way I missed the Lyr. add. thread. The search did interpret the 'not' in another way than I had meant it.

Correct entry would have been: "coal not dole"

Typing "dole" in the Forum And DT Search box would have lead you to Coal Not Dole message which had a link to Lyr Add: Coal Not Dole, and also the Lyr Add thread itself. (putting "Dole" in finds only the 1st indirect link). Putting "Sutcliffe" in the Forum and DT Search box would also have found the Lyr Add thread directly. Putting "dole" or "Dole" in the Filter box, setting the Age to 3 years and doing refresh would have found the Lyr Add thread directly.

I know the search is a bit hit and miss, but it's usually worth a try and Filter is usually fine if the word apeared in a title.

Mick

COAL NOT DOLE
(Kay Sutcliffe)

It stands so proud, the wheels so still,
A ghost-like figure on the hill.
It seems so strange, there is no sound,
Now there are no men underground.

What will become of this pit-yard,
Where men once trampled faces hard?
Tired and weary, their work done,
Never having seen the sun.

Will it become like sacred ground?
Foreign tourists gazing round.
Asking if men once worked here,
Way beneath this pit-head gear.

Empty trucks once filled with coal,
Lined up like men on the dole.
Will they e're be used again,
Or left for scrap just like the men?

There'll always be a happy hour
For those with money, jobs and power.
They'll never realise the hurt,
They cause to men they treat like dirt.

What will become of this pit-yard,
Where men once trampled faces hard?
Tired and weary, their work done,
Never having seen the sun.

There'll always be a happy hour
For those with money, jobs and power.
They'll never realise the hurt,
They do to them they treat like dirt.
