Lyr req: Past the point of rescue

Has anyone managed the figure out the third verse of this Mick Hanly song. The line I can't make out goes something like "Gonna let a star enlight me, do you think that it just might be, no you don't but I do". (I know that can't be correct as it makes no sense) Please don't point me to other recorded versions of this song. Most only sing two verses and the rest make up the third verse.... I assume they couldn't make it out either.

I've got the lyrics in the trunk of my card ........so, give me till lunchtime about 1 and 1/2 hours EST and I'll have it for you. I thought the word was " invite " , not " enlight "

Thanks.. "invite" was one of the possibilities I had... but either way it makes no grammatical sense.

These, I am certain, are the lyrics Mick Hanly sings. I'm sure they came to me via his recordings.

My reading of the lines in question
Gotta let a star invite me - (to try again) (c.f. Wish upon a star)
Do you think there might be....?(the chance to love again)
No, you don't, but I do.

I don't think Mary Black did show good judgement in omitting that verse, not only from her recording but from her songbook. People who've only heard Mary sing it, and people who have her "definitive" version in the songbook think there's only two verses. I've heard several people sing just those two verses, and repeat the first verse like Mary does, and it's a disservice to Mick Hanly, who did write a more complete song than that. Just my two penn'orth...

I agree with you Joan. If a song is worth singing at least do the thing properly with the proper lyrics, but I have to say that the words in the last verse are not "Got to let your love invite me". A number of singers like John Wright and others sing that but it is not remotely correct. Get hold of the Mick Hanly original ... it is by far the best anyway... and the "chorus" only appears once after the second verse. If you like I could E-mail the offending line as an MP3 file... and you too can scratch your head like I did.

I have only just noticed that on the Mick Hanly record it is called "Pass the point of rescue" .... I wonder if I'm pass the pont of rescue... where did he go to school?

He went to school in Limerick, and if you want to hear the story listen to "not the one that you see" which I think was recorded on one of the Moving Hearts records, and is (IMHO) hilarious.

I don't think the artist is generally in charge of proof reading the record sleeve.

The song "not the one that you see" is actually called "All I Remember" and can be found on Moving Hearts 2nd disc, "Dark End Of The Street" as well as on Christy Moore's CD, "The Time Has Come"

Orac, I'll take your word for it that the line is wrong - I was only copying the verses as quoted all over the web, having heard both Mary Black's and Hal Ketchum's versions, but not Mick Hanly's. I'll try and get hold of Mick's album. It's a song I sing myself, so I do want to sing the right words (as a songwriter myself, I do find it frustrating if someone changes my words for no good reason, so I don't want to sing someone else's words wrong).

The lyrics insert in Mick Hanly's CD 'Life at the Meeting Point' has the last verse eactly as Joan has posted it except that the before last line is:

Baby do you think they might be?

Lyrics inserts, however, are never completely reliable. I'll try to listen.

On the album "All I Remember" Ringsend Road MHLP1/MHCD1 issued 1989, Mick Hanly sings the following lyrics, (this is what I hear), confirmed by lyrics printed in insert-

Orac it's called "Pass the point" on the record cover, and on the record and CD themselves. Both lyric inserts and the CD cover list it as "Past"

I've listened now and I can say that on the "live at the Metting Point" CD Mick Hanly sings the lyrics as printed in the lyrics insert. So he seems to have changed the lyrics a bit between performances.
