Subject: Past the point of resue From: Orac Date: 24 Jun 02 - 07:43 AM Has anyone managed the figure out the third verse of this Mick Hanly song. The line I can't make out goes something like "Gonna let a star enlight me, do you think that it just might be, no you don't but I do". (I know that can't be correct as it makes no sense) Please don't point me to other recorded versions of this song. Most only sing two verses and the rest make up the third verse.... I assume they couldn't make it out either. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of resue From: Genie Date: 24 Jun 02 - 10:25 AM Did you mean to say "...the point of rescue?" |
Subject: RE: Past the point of resue From: GUEST,Mike Strobel Date: 24 Jun 02 - 10:34 AM I've got the lyrics in the trunk of my card ........so, give me till lunchtime about 1 and 1/2 hours EST and I'll have it for you. I thought the word was " invite " , not " enlight " Mike Strobel |
Subject: RE: Past the point of resue From: Orac Date: 24 Jun 02 - 10:36 AM Yes ok...I noticed my error after I send it... just hoped no one else would .... |
Subject: RE: Past the point of resue From: Orac Date: 24 Jun 02 - 10:39 AM Thanks.. "invite" was one of the possibilities I had... but either way it makes no grammatical sense. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: 53 Date: 24 Jun 02 - 03:17 PM Hal Ketchum did a fantastic version of this song. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: GUEST,Mike Strobel Date: 24 Jun 02 - 03:38 PM Orac, This is the way I have that line : Gotta let your love invite me, Baby do you think it might be, No you don't , but I do. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: GUEST,Dita (at work) Date: 24 Jun 02 - 07:49 PM Third Verse.
Swore I'd never fall like this again,
These, I am certain, are the lyrics Mick Hanly sings. I'm sure they came to me via his recordings.
My reading of the lines in question love, john

Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: michaelr Date: 25 Jun 02 - 01:59 AM I think Mary Black showed good judgement by omitting that verse from her recording of the song. Michael |
Subject: Lyr Add: PAST THE POINT OF RESCUE (Mick Hanly) From: Joan from Wigan Date: 25 Jun 02 - 04:44 AM PAST THE POINT OF RESCUE (Mick Hanly) Last night I dreamed you were back again Larger than life again, holding me tight again Placing those same kisses on my brow Sweeter than ever now, Lord I remember how Couldn't get enough of kissin' Do you know how much you're missin' No you don't, but I do Days like a slow train trickle by Even the words that I write refuse to fly All that I can hear is your song haunting me Can't get the melody out of my head, you see Distractions I've been using Do you know how much you're losing No you don't, but I do But I do, and I wonder if I'm past the point of rescue Is no word from you at all the best that you can do? I never meant to push or shove you Do you know how much I love you? No you don't, but I do I swore I'd never fall like this again Fools like me never win, came to my knees again Can't close the door on the likelihood Things might be just as good, always believed they would Got to let your love invite me Baby do you think it might be? No you don't, but I do |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Joan from Wigan Date: 25 Jun 02 - 04:51 AM I don't think Mary Black did show good judgement in omitting that verse, not only from her recording but from her songbook. People who've only heard Mary sing it, and people who have her "definitive" version in the songbook think there's only two verses. I've heard several people sing just those two verses, and repeat the first verse like Mary does, and it's a disservice to Mick Hanly, who did write a more complete song than that. Just my two penn'orth... Joan |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Orac Date: 25 Jun 02 - 09:38 AM I agree with you Joan. If a song is worth singing at least do the thing properly with the proper lyrics, but I have to say that the words in the last verse are not "Got to let your love invite me". A number of singers like John Wright and others sing that but it is not remotely correct. Get hold of the Mick Hanly original ... it is by far the best anyway... and the "chorus" only appears once after the second verse. If you like I could E-mail the offending line as an MP3 file... and you too can scratch your head like I did. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Orac Date: 26 Jun 02 - 10:47 AM I have only just noticed that on the Mick Hanly record it is called "Pass the point of rescue" .... I wonder if I'm pass the pont of rescue... where did he go to school? |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Declan Date: 26 Jun 02 - 12:10 PM He went to school in Limerick, and if you want to hear the story listen to "not the one that you see" which I think was recorded on one of the Moving Hearts records, and is (IMHO) hilarious. I don't think the artist is generally in charge of proof reading the record sleeve. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: GUEST,greenfiddler Date: 26 Jun 02 - 09:08 PM The song "not the one that you see" is actually called "All I Remember" and can be found on Moving Hearts 2nd disc, "Dark End Of The Street" as well as on Christy Moore's CD, "The Time Has Come" |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Joan from Wigan Date: 27 Jun 02 - 05:46 AM Orac, I'll take your word for it that the line is wrong - I was only copying the verses as quoted all over the web, having heard both Mary Black's and Hal Ketchum's versions, but not Mick Hanly's. I'll try and get hold of Mick's album. It's a song I sing myself, so I do want to sing the right words (as a songwriter myself, I do find it frustrating if someone changes my words for no good reason, so I don't want to sing someone else's words wrong). Joan |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Wolfgang Date: 27 Jun 02 - 07:14 AM The lyrics insert in Mick Hanly's CD 'Life at the Meeting Point' has the last verse eactly as Joan has posted it except that the before last line is: Baby do you think they might be? Lyrics inserts, however, are never completely reliable. I'll try to listen. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Orac Date: 27 Jun 02 - 01:20 PM Like I said I'll be happy to E-mail anyone the third verse as a MP3 file... you will see then that it is quite different to those lyrics posted above. Its a great song... pity to get it wrong. |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: michaelr Date: 27 Jun 02 - 08:43 PM I avoid like the plague singing any lyrics with the word "baby" in them... |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Joan from Wigan Date: 29 Jun 02 - 07:21 AM Orac, I'd like to take you up on that offer of an mp3 file of the third verse - I've PM'd you with my email address. Joan |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: GUEST,The Burren Ranger.(Ireland) Date: 29 Jun 02 - 09:35 AM AS we're talking Mick Hanly and his wonderful songwriting...have you guys heard his ' most recent album ''Wooden Horses' ? A fine collection...including a definative version of 'Without The Fanfare'. (also rec'd by Mary Black) TBR |
Subject: RE: Past the point of rescue From: Dita Date: 29 Jun 02 - 10:56 AM On the album "All I Remember" Ringsend Road MHLP1/MHCD1 issued 1989, Mick Hanly sings the following lyrics, (this is what I hear), confirmed by lyrics printed in insert-
Got to let a star invite me
Orac it's called "Pass the point" on the record cover, and on the record and CD themselves. Both lyric inserts and the CD cover list it as "Past" love, john |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: Past the point of rescue From: Wolfgang Date: 02 Jul 02 - 03:50 AM I've listened now and I can say that on the "live at the Metting Point" CD Mick Hanly sings the lyrics as printed in the lyrics insert. So he seems to have changed the lyrics a bit between performances. Wolfgang |
