I am interested in a short lyric (4 quatrains, although a longer version is given in the notes at the back of the book) published in Éinrí Ó Muirgheasa, "Céad de Cheolta Uladh" (1915, new edition 1983). I would like to know what tune this song has normally been sung to and if there are any sound recordings of it available. Ó Muirgheasa called the song "Tomás Dall Ó Domhnaill" (or ... Ó Dónaill ), but in several cases the songs in his book are (nowadays) better known by other names than the ones Ó Muirgheas gives.

As Ó Muirgheasa tells us, "This song furnishes a rather striking instance of how highly music was appreciated by the Irish people, when they were Irish, as it shows us the case of a young girl of good family, being so captivated by the music of a blind itinerant fiddler, that she marries him in preference to a handsome young man."

First verse
Siar i mbruach an tsleibhe tá an ainnir mhúinte bhéasach
A dtug mo chróise spéis di dá mb'fhéidir domh í fháil
Is binne guth mo theagair ná a bhfuil de cheol sna téada,
Is póg amháin a bilin bhéarfadh sé na céadta ón bhás.

Philippa

I had a look in the Irish Traditional Music Archive today. The only other copy I could find was in An t-Ath P. Breathnach's Sí Cheol published in 1926. This looks identical to the long (Breslin) version in O Muirgheasa. However: He gives a tune in tonic solfa and refers to it as "Pretty Peggy". I haven't tried to make it out - but will fax/snail mail a copy if you're interested. PM details to me. Mind you - Breathnach often fitted tunes to sets of words, if I remember rightly.

Incidentally, he too gives An Buachaill Óg" as subtitle. I tried searching on tha also, without success.

There's no sign of a recording of it in th ITMA database, either.

Regards

go raibh maith agat as an taighde sin a dhéanamh. Labour beyond the call of duty, but I hope it was interesting for you.

I'm not much good at the solfa myself - great if you would work it out!

does anyone sing this song now? it seems worth keeping or reviving.

Philippa, Try the tune to "Jinnie Dheas a' Deigh-bhean". It suits the rhythm down to the ground.
