I'm sorry the old bat won't be around any more, and my condolences to Dear Abby, her twin. Meanwhile, there have GOT to be songs about her... and if not, there ought to be. Anyone know any or want to write one?

I've always liked her, too, she had smarts and strength. John Prine did a great song about her sister, Dear Abby. Lyrics are here.

(tune: On Top of Old Smokey)

Oh, de-ar Ann Landers
My husband has strayed
My daughter is pregnant
And, I can't get paid.

Is there any hope here?
Should I just give up?
My son's in the closet
The dog just had pups.

My mother left me
My dad's at the booze
The factory has clos-ed
It's terrible news.

So, what can you tell me?
I forgot to ask sooner
Now, you've gone and left us
Whoops, here comes my "nooner."

When you get up to heaven
Pen and paper in hand
Please answer my questions
As best as you can.

When I heard of your passing,
My first thought was this:
Now I'll never get to ask her
Just who took the piss! (UK meaning!)

RIP, Ann, and thanks!

Me, too, Mrrzy, and you can just sing "Ann Landers" instead of "Dear Abby" all through the song. I like yours, too, Kat, and Ann does deserve her own song.

I had dinner with Ann back in '72. I'll miss her. But then, I've already missed her for thirty years, so I'm sort of used to it.

Good songs.

The University of Chicago has for years had an annual "Fool Ann Landers" contest. The winner was whoever got his letter printed. She always claimed she was never fooled.

If your husband has no standards,
If your daughter has no candor,
If your boyfriend pimps and panders
Just sit down and write Ann Landers!

Chorus:

Wisdom, humor, good advice
Moral guidance -- ain't it nice?
The gal who knows the men from mice
That's Ann Landers!

If your spouse's eye meanders,
And your landlord's raised your dander
You don't have to move to Flanders
Just sit down and write Ann Landers!

Cho.

If you've just been dumped by Anders
And your wife says Xerox canned her
And your husband's pure Neander
Just sit down and write Ann Landers!

Wisdom, humor, good advice
Moral guidance -- ain't it nice?
The gal who knows the men from mice
That's Ann Landers!

You're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem, man -- I learned that from the Resident Shrub!! How about "Your husband's kiss feels like a sander?"

(BTW, I love the "pure Neander" line!)

Here's a serious obituary of Esther Lederer, a.k.. Ann Landers (who, by the way, was not the first Ann Landers – Lederer won a Chicago Sun-Times contest to become the second Ann Landers after the woman who created the column died – yet strangely enough Lederer's wish was that the "Ann Landers" column would end with her death): http://www.legacy.com/LegacySubPage1.asp?Page=APStory&Id=3389

Your baby says you're all unmanned; her
Body type is like a pander
Use the mail, and tell Ann Landers!

When your wife, the Great Miss Zandra,
Cries a stip-tease critic panned her,
And the State of Texas banned her
Tell your troubles to Ann Lander

But since yer reciprocating with calumny and obloquoy, I take it back; y'er a pure-dee disgrace to the Puritan neurosis, the Abigail Adams Association of Obsessive-Compulsive Teacup Scrubbers, AAAOCTS, and the Northern DAR Professional Defamers of Any Good Time Anywhere (NDARPDAGTA) and all their civic-minded sororities in Garden Clubs from Fairfield County up to Maine. "Let to stay among the Puritans", hell! Didn't the Puritans hang Quakers? Kendall says so, here: BS: US ...pledge of allegiance ruled out! – kendall's post of 26-Jun-02 9:31 pm

A couple of years ago, Pennsylvania ran an ad campaign to promote tourism; the slogan was "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania". I had to laugh, because there are whole big bunches of Friends here! *BG* After all, ol' Billy Penn hisself was a Quaker. And where would the Underground Railroad have been without Quakers to help move it along? (I grew up within sight of one of the "stations" i.e. hiding places!) So, yeah, I appreciate living around that kind of a legacy.

Boy, we've strayed far afield from the subject of ol' Ann Landers, haven't we?!

Sharon, note that I specified "...botanically challenged non-Californians...," not all Californians. I wasn't questioning your smarts back there in the East. I, myself, an an avid gardener, but I'd never heard of oleander until I started frequenting SoCal, where it's all over the freeway median strips. Even then, if my mom hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have known about its toxicity.

So,

If you think that someone slanders
You with jive 'bout oleanders,
Don't just be a hurt bystander--
Vent your rage to ol' Ann Landers.
