What 5 tunes would one most likely encounter when attending a jam of old time music?

It really depends on the group. What is common with one group another rarely plays. You will have to ask a member of the jam you'd like to sit in with. At least that's the way it is around here.

Sometimes equally important is (in any local group) who will you hear play any five songs. If you are trying to enjoy performing with a group, finding out who does what and lending a hand is a great way to meet people. Loving music will do a lot to prepare you for a circle but seeking to understand\appreciate the people in a music circle is the best way to become aquainted.

Well, assuming you get five chances to choose a song, you're most likely to encounter your own five favourite old time tunes. (And guess what? Other people probably know most of them too, so you won't feel like you're soloing when you do them.)

I'd say, don't worry too much about the first time. Don't worry about impressing anyone. Nobody will care too much if you mess up your own songs. After eight years and well over 500 song circles and music circles, I never take the time to form strong opinions about anyone who hasn't shown up at least three times. Watch others to try to figure out how enthusiatically to join in -- usually the only rules are, don't be louder than the people who are leading songs and don't lose the rhythm -- support but don't interfere.

If I had to prepare five "well known" "old time" songs to sing with a group, I'd choose: hmmm...

Wild Mountain Thyme
Red River Valley
Home on the Range
Waltzing Matilda (well, it's got an "old" sound)
Oh, Susanna

Everyone knows Amazing Grace, but don't try it unless you can already do it. But I'd be darn surprised to have even three of these songs sung at any one gathering.

At the ones I've seen, the likes would be "Goin' up Cripple Creek", "Old Joe Clark" "Chicken are a crowin' n Sourwood mountain", and similar ones from the Southeastern U.S. Is this a jam with or without banjos and mandolins?

Real ole timey music doesn't use a mandolin but will will use a banjo. Of course bluegrass uses both, or can use both. I just got a great CD tonight...Close to Home - Old time Music from Mike Seeger's Collection. Some of it is a little raw...but alot of it is good,
