BACK TO BROOME
(Ted Egan)

I'm takin' you back to Broome today
What'll we do when we get to Broome?
All aboard a lugger, we're on our way
What'll we do in Broome?

You'll see Broome's fascinating ways
Japanese, Koepangers, and Malays
I'm takin' you back to early days
The hurly, burly, pearly days
The good old days in Broome!

CHORUS: So it's: Haul away! Heave away!
Up with the anchor chain – two! three! four!
Haul away! Heave away!
We're goin' back to Broome again!

I'm takin' you back...
What'll we do...
All aboard a lugger...
What'll we do...

There's a pearling master so astute
A Japanese diver lookin' ever so cute
Sovereign buttons on a starched white suit
And a mouth full of golden teeth to boot
He's properly flash in Broome.

So it's: Haul away! …

We'll take a trip to Chinatown
At the Roebuck Pub, we'll knock one down
Broome's the place of great renown
The people are black, white, yellow, and brown
It's Technicolor in Broome.

I'm takin' you back to Broome with me
And if you want to learn about history
Sit in the shade of a Tamarind tree
Meet the Unsinkable Kennedy
And he'll tell you all about Broome.

We'll go for a ride on a funny little train
And take a walk down Sheba Lane
But when you get back don't try to explain
Your wife won't let you go back again
You'll never get back to Broome.

There's a team of Manila-men sorting shell
Singing the lugger-boat songs as well
Splice the mainbrace! Ring the bell!
The rest of the world can go to hell!
We'll have a good time in Broome.

I'm takin' you back to Broome, me dears
At the Conti Pub have a few cold beers
There's Con Gill's cockatoo, block yer ears
The greatest swearer heard in years
And he's cursing his luck in Broome.

Hear Captain Tallboys tell a tale
On the verandah in front of Streeter & Male
At the Governor Broome we'll quaff an ale
Watching the luggers as they set sail
Sailing today from Broome.

At Matzo's Store you'll buy the best
You'll see Billy Dampier's treasure chest
Head for Broome, forsake the rest
Broome's the pearl of the Golden West
We'll have a good time in Broome.

Cheers! RJB

Seems to be a fun song, but a group of people are singing it on a cd, and it seems to be after several drinks. Can only understand about half of it...
If you have the lyrics, that'd help lots!
thanks
K

Hi, Kitty - is it this one? I put broom in the filter box and set the age to "all," and came up with lots of threads. Maybe one of them has the song you seek.

I can't find anything based on just that line. Could you post what you do have currently?

That elided final -g is always a problem, as people use it so inconsistently. I expect Joe's link is the answer. With luck, Bob Bolton will turn up at some point, he's your man for the Antipodean repertoire.

One thing, Kitty: it always helps if you tell us everything you already know when asking a question. From your other posts, I assume this is an Australian piece; but what was the recording? Name, date, location, personnel, all that sort of thing can make searching a lot more productive.

See Joe's post above, with link to lyric already posted here.

Are all of Kitty's current questions about Ted Egan songs? Are they all from the same recording?

I added the lyrics for Ted Egan's "Back to Broome" in a thread on June 25th, 2002.

Comes up if you just search "Broome" ...

Cheers! R-J

Hi friends,
sorry it took so long to get back to you. Had to be gone all day.
The blue clicky thing up there is the one!!! Thanks so much. I actually had searched for it under Broome, and nothing came up. I doubt I spelled it wrong... At any rate, that is the song, so you have saved me!!
Kathryn

Alice Springs group "Bloodwood", in the 80s, had a very popular version, too ...

best version I've heard is that sung by the Redfern Shanty Club in a small bar with around 45 singers, most under 30, belting it out after learning the chorus, under the general instruction to newcomers If you don't know the words, SING LOUDER! One of the greybeards in the audience added an extra verse about his grandfather's butcher shop.

Redfern Shanty Club - check out the videos in case Broome has been included.

Redfern Shanty Club on reverbnation alas, they did not include Broome.

"Bringing the Beer to Broome" is a song by Victorian, Peter Lenne.
The lyrics and provenance are in this thread : /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=13459

I knew it from the singing of the Alice Springs (NT) bush band BLOODWOOD*,
who despite being excellent - and chosen by The Gummint as representatives of the "Face of Australia" for some years (many overseas tours!),
now have barely a presence online and all their recordings are hard to find.    Very Sad.

Cheers,
R-J

PS    *AFAIK, most members are still performing around The Alice.

Bloodwood did a new album a few years ago on CD.

Always enjoyed them,
