I was watching my tape of the season finale episode of The West Wing, and I realize why Cohen's "Hallelujah" resonated with me so much when I heard it used on "Scrubs." Not only have I heard Leonard Cohen himself do it, but it was used to very powerful effect at the conclusion of this West Wing episode, too. I'm not sure whose recording it was (not Cohen's), but it was very haunting and moving.

What a powerful song!

It's still not the hallelujah song I was looking for a while back. Hallelujah was used in that more as an exclamation of delight that the bloke in the song had finally met up with the girl he'd been lusting after.... still trying to find out what it is. I heard it at a gig I did in cambridge where a group of dinner suited wedding guests sang it in the style of Kings singers and altho' I'm not a great fan of that sort of music generally I really liked the song.

Here is the song with chords ( from OLGA):

 Halleluhah!
(from the album "More Best Of '97")

 Now, I've (G)heard there was a (Em)secret chord
That (G)David played, and it (Em)pleased the Lord,
 But (C)you don't really (D)care for music, (G)do ya?(D)
It (G)goes like this: the (C)fourth, the (B7)fifth,
The (Em)minor fall, the (C)major lift,
 The (D)baffled king com(B7)posing
 "Halle(Em)lujah!"

 Halle(C)lujah!
 Halle(Em)lujah!
 Halle(C)lujah!
 Halle(G)lujah!(D) (G)(D)

Your faith was strong but you needed proof.
You saw her bathing on the roof.
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her.
She tied you to a kitchen chair,
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair,
And from your lips she drew the
 "Hallelujah!"

 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!

You say I took the name in vain.
I don't even know the name,
But if I did, well, really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word.
It doesn't matter which you heard--
The holy or the broken "Hallelujah!"

 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!

I did my best; it wasn't much.
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch.
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya.
And even though it all went wrong,
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but "Hallelujah!"

 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!   Hallelujah!
 Hallelujah!

 Leonard Cohen

I absolutely LOVE Rufus Wainwright's version on the Shrek soundtrack!!!!!!!

A version of this was also featured in Crossing Jordan, in the episode where they found the dead man at the altar with what looked like stigmata on his hands.

The Cale version of Cohen's "Hallelujah" is also featured to good effect in the movie "Shrek"

Here is a link to it on OLGA

Genie.

Sorry if I caused any confusion. I din't see the show in question. I'm only pointing out that the Leonard Cohen song "Hallalujah" (I heard there was a secret chord....that David played and it pleased the Lord....) has been covered sublimely by Jeff Buckley. I do not know if this is the same one or not.

Slan go foill

Hmmmm, Mikey. I kept thinking, when I was trying to identify the song, that it sounded like a Leonard Cohen song I'd heard--but the voice on "Scrubs" wasn't Leonard Cohen. If John Cale was singing Leonard Cohen's song, that solves the mystery.

Now to see if the Cohen lyrics are here in the DT or Forum.

Jeff Buckley does an incrediible version of Leonard Cohens "hallalujah" on his album Grace.

I don't even know if this is relevant but you really really should listen to it if you haven't already

Scene: J.D.'s patient, Mrs. Tanner, comforts him; the doctors experience the exception to 'the rule'; the scene ends with the gang enjoying time in the park.

"Hallelujah" performed by John Cale. Album: 'Fragments of a Rainy Season'. From this site

Just having a look - but your best bet is possibly a fan site. If you can find one, they seem to be rather thin on the ground. (Great show, though!)

Just saw a rerun of an episode of the TV show "Scrubs"--the one in which all three interns' patients die. The background song is a song which, I assume, is titled: "Hallelujah," since that's the hook word. I can't quite place the artist's voice [Jackson Browne, maybe? -- not sure], though it's familiar.

If any of you folks saw the show and/or can think of a contemporary artist who has a song called "Hallelujah," please let me know.

Thanks,

Genie
