From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Jun 02 - 05:35 PM This one oughta' be good.........Remember Bill, this will undoubtedly go the appeal route and we'll see if it makes it to the SC....which with this Court might be a frightening prospect. I'll celebrate the battle with you today, but uh.......I have some fears for the war. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: US ...pledge of allegiance ruled out! From: Bill D Date: 26 Jun 02 - 05:31 PM from CNN story.."The phrase was added in 1954 through legislation signed by President Eisenhower. The appeals court noted that Eisenhower wrote then that "millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty."" I remember being in school.... 8th grade? and being uncomfortable with that even then...patriotism should have NOTHING to do with religious beliefs. I will happily recite the Pledge, as I always have, without the addendum |
Subject: US ...pledge of allegiance ruled out! From: GUEST,Bill D..(where's my cookie?) Date: 26 Jun 02 - 05:26 PM just in...9th circuit court (western US) "Updated: 05:11 p.m. EDT (2111 GMT) -- 26 June 2002 Pledge ruled unconstitutional A federal appeals court today ruled the Pledge of Allegiance is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the addition of the phrase "under God" in 1954 by Congress. In its ruling, the court said, "The Pledge, as currently codified, is an impermissible government endorsement of religion." about time!!! |
