I am sorry about the delay in posting here for people who might be trying to get into the Annexe but we have been trying to find out what the problem is, and when the system will be restored.

Our ISP had problems with a DNS server and swapping a faulty hard disk. Apparently their initial plan of restoring the system failed and they are now having to do a "remote backup" which is taking a long time. The news is that some of the sites they host are now up and running and others will be restored as soon as possible.

I apologise for this but the situtation is out of our control. We don't even have email access to reply to any messages that may have been sent to [e-mail], etc. or to contact the ISP.

On the subject of downtime, if the system ever needs to be taken down for maintainence or updates, I will continue Jon's policy of giving advanced notice in the forum and having a temporary home page keeping people up to date while any such work is carried out. Unfortunately this is not possible when the ISP crashes!

Pip - it happens! I happen to know that there were SIX (!) major routers down in Florida yesterday - and I beleive Jon said that is where your site is hosted.

I've just asked Jon. He says that our ISP is UK based but he believes that they use the services of Dialtone who he thinks are based in Florida.

I was thinking - you know how music threads that have been started on the Annexe when Mudcat has been down have been transferred to Mudcat when it's recovered - well, should non music threads on Mudcat be transferred to the Annexe when.....

I'm a bit in 2 minds as to whether I should post here or not... On one hand, I feel after my dissagreement with Max, I should keep out but one the other hand, with Pip and her efforts with the Annexe, (and with the knowledge I currently have to take on the tech side) I feel I owe it to her to post... and with apologies to Max, have therefore decided to do so.

I really don't know what is going on but the site is at least now back up with no content. I'll try to keep people informed there.

I have managed to get a page up in place of the usual forum here.

A friend of mine works for an ISP in the UK which re-sells BT product (including ADSL), and none of their customers have been able to get online all day. The ISP couldn't, either! I believe that it's up and running again as of early evening (basically, at least), but I won't know what the problem was until tomorrow. Could be that you were hit by the same fault, which at the moment looks to be down to BT.
