Subject: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: GUEST,Strollin Johnny Date: 29 Jun 02 - 07:36 AM Last night at our club I sang 'Rollin' Down To Old Maui' and, as always, the joiner-inners slowed the churus down to snail's pace, despite my desperate efforts to keep the momentum going. I've heard a parody that's called something like 'Slowin' Down to Old Maui' - anybody out there got the lyrics? JB Search for "maui" threads |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 29 Jun 02 - 07:39 AM And before anyone feels compelled to tell me, yes, I know I did a typo on 'chorus'. We're all human! JB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jun 02 - 08:31 AM Someone, I'm sure, will come up with the "Rolling Down to Lethargy" parody that you're after, which you should be able to find with a thread search. I'm too lazy to... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Celtic Soul Date: 29 Jun 02 - 08:48 AM There is a parody of Maui called "Slowing down to lethargy". Considering how many people ritard the chorus, I'd say it's right on target.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 29 Jun 02 - 10:58 AM It's been mentioned in a Rollin' Down to Old Maui thread, at least once or twice. However, no one has come up with it. I found one singer, Hilary Spencer of England who sings it. That information also gave the name - Toby Fagenson - who was probably the author of this song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jun 02 - 11:50 AM Hilary Spencer of Artisan sings it on her splendid solo CD AFTERIMAGE (MCPS SMSCD02) which you can order from her website:www.hilaryspencer.com This CD also has the dolefull ballad "My Husband's Got No Porridge In Him." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Clinton Hammond Date: 29 Jun 02 - 01:19 PM I also have a parody of it, Rollin' Down To Old Delhi... Maybe one day I'll dig it up and post it... On the subject of people who sing it too slowly... I fixed 'em... I stopped doing it accapella... it's the exact same chord progression as "Star Of The County Down"... so I do it with lots of percussive guitar stuff now... Keeps 'em in line! ;-)

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 Jun 02 - 07:09 AM George, you're right - it was Hilary I heard singing it at our local club. Thanks for the memory-nudge. Clinton, I like that solution. Never thought of doing the song with guitar but you're right, it works! Thanks. Everyone else, still need the words to 'Slowing Down' though! JB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 30 Jun 02 - 07:48 AM Yes, please. BTW, in one of those other threads we have here at Mudcat, I posted another parody of the song, written by Brian Robertson. Rolling Down to Old Maui from the point of the whales. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Jun 02 - 12:22 PM I've heard "Slowing down to lethargy" in a singaround (performed by Robin Burns I think). "My Husband's got no Porridge in him" is thanks to Les Barker - Hilary Spencer is a member of the Mrs Ackroyd Band as well as Artisan - and not to be confused with My Husband's too much Courage in him (written by Pete McNab - Courage was a brewing firm). Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Jun 02 - 02:01 PM So when is someone going to do the same to 'Thousands or more' which can start in 6/8 and drag right down to 1/1 in some singarounds..... unless it's the Wilsons doing it, in which case, you may find yourself still singing the first chorus when they're on the last verse! Subject: Lyr Add: SLOWING DOWN TO LETHARGY (T Fagenson)^^ From: Gervase Date: 01 Jul 02 - 06:17 AM Is this the one? ^^ SLOWING DOWN TO LETHARGY (Toby Fagenson) Now we love to sing of the open sea As the sailors used to do. But it seems each time that we sing these songs They take longer to get through. We have no place for for a lively pace As we plough on ploddingly. Let each note sustain And from oomph refrain As we head toward Lethargy. (Chorus) Slowing down to Lethargy, me boys, Slowing down to Lethargy. We'll nail it hard with a big retard, Slowing down to Lethargy. If you wish to rush or you need to push Won't you please control the urge, As we sing each line with the energy Of the average funeral dirge. Six hellish months have passed away Or so it seems to be, Since our shantyman this song began, Slowing down to Lethargy. He called this tune by the light of the moon; Well hello, here comes the sun! Our tempo crawls, each syllable stalls, And we've barely just begun. Our song still booms, we are carried away By our voices' glorious sound. The verse is winding down at last; Thank God we're chorus bound! It's been far from fast, but we're home at last, Now we're heaving into port. As we disembark, hear some fool remark That that song seemed far too short! But don't you fret, we've a lot more yet, And a snail's pace keeps its power, As our voices boom into 'Fathom the Bowl' For at least another hour. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: GUEST,vectis at work Date: 01 Jul 02 - 07:32 AM Thanks Gervase. I've harvested that one into my songbook. Mary |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Dead Horse Date: 01 Jul 02 - 08:28 PM Now can we have "Crawl The Woodpile Down" in the same vein & for the same reasons? Every time I sing this shanty, some buggers drag the last few lines of chorus as if it were the last few lines of the song, and I have to start all over again. Why do they do it??? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Nigel Parsons Date: 02 Jul 02 - 06:04 AM Mitchell Burnside Clapp does a great 'Filk' version of this entitled "Falling Down on New Jersey" about the devastating impact of a homecoming spaceship with an asteroid in tow, but with insufficient fuel to land safely. I've scanned the various web sites with no luck finding the full words. Nigel |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Gervase Date: 02 Jul 02 - 07:47 AM I've got a version of the 'filk' version with the chorus: We're falling down on Milton Keynes, me boys, Falling down on Milton Keynes, We thought it best to apologise, To the folks of Milton Keynes. Is that the one? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Jul 02 - 03:49 PM Speaking of SLOOOOWWWW.... Why does almost everybody do "Mingulay Boat" like it's a frigg'n lament?!?!?!?! I know when -I'M- homeward bound, I'm HAPPY! Pick it up, people... these guys wanna get home before they die of old age! ;-)

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Jul 02 - 06:12 PM Dead Horse- I can't dish you up "Crawl The Woodpile Down" but I do know the words to "Bowling the Whole Year Round" which I believe was composed by our friend out on the island Mark Cohen. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Jul 02 - 05:20 AM Gervase: That is the chorus to the filk of the filk. Mitchell B.C. did "Falling down on New Jersey", which was heard by a couple of English filkers (Valerie Housden & Phil Allcock IIRC) who changed the words to include English place names to replace the American. Scansion and sense were kept almost identical, although they did finish the song with a wish that the asteroid could be diverted to destroy the Brighton Metropole Hotel (which has at times proved less than helpful to filkers!) I have a long term project to translate it to Welsh, with suitable place names! Nigel |
Subject: ADD: Falling Down on New Jersey (parody) From: Eden Date: 24 Feb 04 - 08:21 AM I've got good news! I know the entire song "Falling Down on New Jersey"! Here it is: Falling Down on New Jersey It's a damn tough life leaving home and wife That we astronauts undergo. And we don't give a damn when the mission's done Just how far the ship did go. But you'll be sad to learn our de-orbit turn Won't occur, for the tanks are empty. And the fuel line's torn, so you'd better warn All the folks in New Jersey. (Chorus) We're falling down on New Jersey, me boys; Falling down on New Jersey. We thought it wise to apologize To the folks in New Jersey. We know a ship alone, when it's coming home Would be burned up and destroyed. But with ship and crew, we brought with us too An 11-mile asteroid! So when you've awoken all the people in Haboken And the prophs in Princeton too, We'll divulge the fact that the rocks impact Will be at 7:32. (chorus) Well, why all the shock? Heck it's just a rock! Are we simply alarmist fools? But it has, you see, potential energy Of roughly 10 to the 19th Joules! With the rock's advance there is Buckley's chance That the Garden State'll be spared. And we soon will show (if you didn't know) E is one-half of MV squared. (chorus) We'll light a spark that'll toast Newark And flatten Perthamboy. It won't be pretty in Atlantic City. You should shield your eyes in Troy. Even so, and yet, we have one regret: That we haven't a Delta V To push it forth just a few miles north And land SMACK! on NYC! (chorus) We're falling down on New Jersey, me boys. Falling down on New Jersey. We apologize-hey, we're sorry guys- But so long to New Jersey! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Feb 04 - 03:48 PM Well for once something to agree with Clinton Hammond about, except that I don't think the sequence is quite the same as Star of the County Down - I think that has nore minors. Maui goes Tis a Em B G D We Em D Em (rpt) Aah Homeward Em D Good ship G FreeEm D G B And we Em D G D With the Em D Em Repeat last four typed lines for chorus Play it just about as fast as you can get the Em D G B clean. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Feb 04 - 11:49 PM Missed this the first time around. Yes, The Bowling Shanty is mine, I'll admit it. I won't admit that "Comin' Down With Old VD" is mine, because I don't think it's funny any more and don't sing it. But there you are. Oh, and thanks for posting the New Jersey one, Eden. A couple of minor points from this Princeton grad: it's Hoboken and Perth Amboy. Of course, "Falling Down on New Jersey" could also refer to Welles' radio version of "War of the Worlds." Hmmmm...... Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slowin' Down to Old Maui From: Eden Date: 25 Feb 04 - 07:40 AM Thanks for clearing that up, Mark. I'm new here, actually. New to Mudcat, that is. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLING DOWN FROM OLD MAUI From: radriano Date: 25 Feb 04 - 04:52 PM From the pen of Pam Swan of the San Francisco Bay Area: ROLLING DOWN FROM OLD MAUI It's a rough tough life Of toil and strife We singles undergo And we don't give a damn When the date is done How bad that date did go We're homeward bound Met a Club Med clown On a cruise that wasn't free And now I'm done Drinkin' Coke and Rum With the boys in old Maui Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui, me boys Rollin' down from Old Maui We're homeward bound From the tourist town Rollin' down from Old Maui Once more I sailed With a muscular male Thinkin' maybe he's my man But his coconut brain Made our dialog strain And I won't see him again Six hellish days I've pissed away On a cruise that wasn't free And now I'm done I've had my fun Get me home from Old Maui Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui... Once more I sailed With Julie and Gail On our vacation week It rained and poured We all got bored And Julie met some geek We got a little carried away In a bar in Lahina sound And now the cops are after us Thank God we're homeward bound Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui... How soft the breeze Through the island trees And my heart will never learn Them native boys With their jet-ski toys Are awaiting my return Every now and then We'll go back again Maybe someday soon, we'll see I'll bag this job My savings rob And go back to Old Maui Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui... |
