That is the verse I know too. I had an album called 'Music of the Poison Coyote Kid' (i think). Some more good tunes on there too.

I recall Hank singing this with a different ending to the next-to-last verse.
No faxes, latte or karaoke in the hills of Tennessee back then... Instead:

"To the Bureau of Narcotics, and the revenooers too.."

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MAYOR IS A GOOD OLD BOY (Mike Seeger)

Here are the words from Mike Seeger's CD.

THE MAYOR IS A GOOD OLD BOY
(Hank Bradley)

1. My uncle died a month ago and he left it all to me:
Ten acres of old strip-mine ground in the hills of Tennessee,
But the dirt's all gone and the trees won't grow on the stripped out piece of land,
So I think I'll get me a government loan and build me a hot-dog stand.

2. I'll hire a developer and we'll draw a set of plans.
We'll wheel and deal with the zoning board till they play into our hands.
We'll build it out of cinder blocks with a big red neon sign,
And pave the rest for a parking lot Right up to the property line.

3. Now the mayor is a good old boy and a cousin of mine too,
So I got me such a government loan I didn't know what to do.
I built me the grandest hot-dog stand in the state of Tennessee
With fourteen floors of offices and a penthouse just for me.

4. Them offices rented in no time flat to the mayor's favorite crew,
To the police chief and the poodle trimmer and the perfume salesman too,
To the VFW and the IRS which takes my I.O.U.,
To the fax machine and the latte stand and the karaoke too.

5. My neighbor likes to farm the land and he works the clock around,
But me and the mayor and the zoning board knows what's best for this town.
I had him zoned commercial and his taxes went outta hand.
He's bound to sell and I'll buy him out and build another hot-dog stand.

The title is "The Mayor is a Good Old Boy" and it's written by Hank Bradley who sings it with Mike Seeger on Mike's "Third Annual Farewell Reunion" CD. If nobody else does, I'll get the words posted here when I have a chance.

Subject: Tenessee hot dog stand song....
From: Jonathan Robie (jwrobie@mindspring.com)

I am looking for the words to a song that starts out with a line something like:

"My father died the other day, and he left it all to me, XXXX acres of hard packed clay in the hills of Tenessee..."

The song goes on to detail how the guy built a hot dog stand and got lots of government subsidies for it and became rich.

I remember the tune... anybody know the words, title, and who wrote it?

Jonathan
