Ah well, he's rotting in hell now. Anyway its very visible but not very deep, I can barely feel it with my fingernail. Any smart tricks for damage control without a major overhaul? The first person who suggests putting a sticker over it is dead too. Ha ah! |

In a years time I might not be able to find the first scratch among all the others. A friend of mine had a Lowden with a gig hole where his scratch plate should have been. He was some man for breaking strings too. Good player though. |

I had tuner with a suction pad that you use to stick it to the guitar. I stuck it to my O10 and it fell off. As it fell it put three dents in the top above the soundhole. I traded my O10 for a brand-new O25 and stoopidly used that crap tuner on it in the first week. Yep, you guessed - more dents on my new O25! Worse was to come. I got a small mark on it below the soundhole which I thought I could reduce by rubbing it hard with a damp cloth. Took the polish right off, so now it has a bare patch about the size of your thumbnail. F*****g Hell! Still sounds fantastic though! Seriously, if you're wittered by scratches, take it to a good (repeat GOOD) repair man - he'll know all the tricks. Failing that, if it's a bad mark, have a talk to the sales guy at Lowden about having it re-finished at the factory. DO NOT try to doctor it yourself like I did. JB

If neither of the above is the case, you should feel liberated, now that you can enjoy the instrument rather than worrying about keeping its virtue safe. That's my take on it, FWIW. Peter. |

At St Patrick's I was almost sick as I picked my O23 back up after our other guitarist's Gibson fell on it. The scratch on the front is long and readily apparent. So now I got charactor (My D18 REALLY has charactor...) I think the scratch is bigger because of the soft cedar top. Ed |

Some ape dropped it, and did some slight damage, but, my local music store owner/luthier, says it wont effect the value. I don't care about value because I don't intend to sell it, and, I dont really mind the slight damage. What I DO mind is the creep who should be selling anvils, not handling instruments. I know three Collings owners, only one ,Midchuck, allows me to play his. The other two are really anal about letting anyone play their baby. |

I picked up my guitar, a Jap Squier Strat to do the second set, and found a big piece of glass sticking out of it. The remains of a pint pot lay on the stage. I'd love to know what happened while we were taking a break, but I wouldn't dream of trying to repair the damage. (I WOULD like to apologise to the music lover who inflicted it.) Its all part of the business. Did you ever see Rory Gallagher's 'Strat? I personally think this is all very character building for both Guitar & Player. Fogie.. I've got a 33 year old Eko, it slipped out of my hand at the top of our stairs and bounced down every step 'til it hit the bottom with an awful sickening thud. (Still in tune though.) The back came away, I stuck it with wood glue and left a washing machine on it overnight. Good as new. I also 'electrified' it by attaching a pickup to it with two drawing pins. Those were the days. Mind you, if I'd forked out as much as Allen.... |

Stupidest one on my cherished Martin 0-18 is the chew marks on the bout where the middle hinge on a not-so-new case had detached from the lid, and when not paying attention I would close the case so the loose end of the hinge was sticking inside the case. Ouch. I think gig hole is a good term. AKA a "Willie Junior". If it was bigger than the hole in W Nelson's Martin classical, it would certainly be structurally problematic. That's an excellent ding story Midchuck. Well I just restrung the 0-18 so I'm gonna go play it some more. GHS Silk & Bronze, nice. W-O

At that age there is only one way to carry things -- you grab one corner and drag it. The fact that it was on a concrete patio kinda escaped her young notice. For a short while I saw red and had to bite my tongue quite hard. Now, however, when I look at that scramble of scratches, it brings back fond memories of her early years. The guitar still sounds wonderful. And just to get even, I have given it to the now-grown daughter who has learned to play it with flair, scratches and all! **bg**. A |

They had several left in inventory so they put them in storage in the back room and there they sat and some still do! In 1982 Chuck need a guitar to pick some Bluegrass so he needed a D-model guitar. Chuck was in tight with the son of the shops owner so he was able to buy a D-41 at the 1950 price. He brought the D-41 to the rehearsal where I knocked the music stand into it. I put a scratch in it about one inch long, half of the scratch on the tortouis pickgard and the other half just below it. I felt like a poop! Anyway...today you can't even see the scratch. It has long since been covered up by pick-scratch and what-not. Your scratch is just the first in a long line of scratches, don't give it a seconded thought. Yes, I have learned to love the scratch and it probably wont be long before there's a few more on it with the shower of drunken musicians I hang out with. By the way, the Lowden comes with D'Addario EXP(?) strings that cost about 20 dollars a set. Whilst I normally despise cheaper D'Addario strings, I must admit that these will blow Martin SPs away. Makes me feel sick as this is probably one of the first that lakewood made. It has not affected the sound or the structural integrity but its sickening to see such a fine instrument damaged. Question is - do I get it repaired or try and effect a repair myself, and of course how much will it cost. The only saving grace is that it wasn't the new Taylor which was parked next to it. All my guitars and banjos will be kept in their cases from now on |

Scratch on my new Lowden 010 From: Fossil Date: 20 Mar 12 - 12:19 AM There's a small ding on the back of my Cole Clark Fat Lady and the beautiful matte finish on the front is getting quite shiny where my right arm and sleeve rest when I'm picking or strumming. The ding was caused when I lost control of the neck while putting it into the case and dropped it from about six inches onto the case latch. I'm very relieved to find others so relaxed about damaging their precious axes. Like them, I was mortified at the time, but now find that a) it doesn't affect the sound (which would *really* piss me off!) and b) adds a bit of character and identifiabilty to the guitar. Not that it really needs any - the bunya pine face is totally unique anyway, but I took photos just in case. And the sound just keeps getting better. Oh well, guess I'll keep her! |

When my guitar suffered cracks in the top (caused by the clasp on a falling lid), I called my brother the expert. He asked one thing: "Does the crack cross a glued joint?" The answer, happily, was no. He told me to drill round holes at the ends of the cracks to stop them from propagating. Filling them was optional. The DH and I did that, with an electric drill and the smallest drill bit there is - a sewing machine needle. I backfilled the cracks and holes with goop from the hardware store, and my guitar has been fine ever since. |

The round hole you drill needs to be as wide as the crack. |
