Subject: Your favorite homies! From: GUEST,JJ Date: 03 Jul 02 - 12:45 PM So I was having this great conversation with friends last night. We were remembering who our favorite hometown band/artist was growing up--but the hitch was it had to be a musical act that gave you really good vibes of local pride. I was surprised with myself with the first thing that popped into my head was (being a New Yorker) the band The Young Rascals, later just The Rascals. They had GREAT good vibes songs. At the time, my fave band was really an outfit called The Blues Project (anyone remember them?), although I also loved listening to the Rascals on the radio. But then I realized I listened to Blues Project on the turntable, but the Rascals were one of my faves on the radio. So--here is the challenge. Your fave homies either live (ie local musicians) or radio homies that you associate with good vibes. Give us your lists people, and let's have some SUMMER FUN with it!

Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: MMario Date: 03 Jul 02 - 12:50 PM I can only think of one local band (other then school sponsored groups) from my "growing up" period- and they were literally a community marching band. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Wesley S Date: 03 Jul 02 - 12:55 PM Brave Combo - Still on the road and bring nuclear polka to your town. Stevie Ray Vaughn - from Dallas but he played here in Ft Worth enough to claim him. The Light Crust Doughboys The Juke Jumpers - A rocking little blues band Killbilly - a thrash/bluegrass group I'll think of some more as soon as I sign off. |

Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: DonD Date: 03 Jul 02 - 01:39 PM Oops! I read the thread headin as 'MY FAVORITE HORNIES'. My old eyes always confuse 'm' with 'rn'. I was sure it was a Spaw creation; what a disappointment. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: GUEST,JJ Date: 03 Jul 02 - 01:42 PM A disappointment? I'm crushed. Why do you think this thread idea is such a disappointment? I thought the idea of discussing feel good music would have been appreciated. I guess I was wrong about that. God, what a spoilsport. Friendly forum here. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Steve Latimer Date: 03 Jul 02 - 01:58 PM In the seventies Toronto had some pretty good bands. Some of my favourites include A Foot In Coldwater, David Wilcox & The Teddy Bears (prior to this Wilcox actually played in a Bluegrass Band with Rick Fielding), Fludd, Max Webster & The Downchild Blues Band. Toronto is also home to Rush, who I despise. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Rich_and_Dee Date: 03 Jul 02 - 02:04 PM As I hail from Boston, Massachusetts: There was a band called The Fools in Boston. They recorded a parody of the Talking Heads' 'Psycho Killer' and called it 'Psycho Chicken'. They had a string of fun and silly songs. The "Fa-fa" lines became "bawk-bawk". During my 20-something years I could be found at Paddy Burke's Pub in Boston listening to Brehan Law tear through sets on the weekends. Great bunch of guys. Jeez, not I'm all kinds of homesick for dear old Boston. Rich |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Steve Latimer Date: 03 Jul 02 - 04:35 PM I forgot about The Paul James Band. These guys have been playing good old R& R and Blues for as long as I can remember. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: kendall Date: 03 Jul 02 - 05:00 PM Dick Curless (Tombstone every mile) Jud Strunk (Daisy a day) Lenny Breau jazz guitarist. Chet Atkins said, "Lenny has forgot more about the guitar than I ever knew." |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Benjamin Date: 03 Jul 02 - 05:00 PM For me, it was Nirvana. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Celtic Soul Date: 03 Jul 02 - 09:01 PM Well, it was not from when I was growing up, as I had no local heroes then (just the typical pop icons). But for local color, and damn good music, "Them Eastport Oyster Boys" do it for me now. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Peter Kasin Date: 03 Jul 02 - 10:41 PM Local heroes Dick Holdstock and Allan MacLeod. Louis Killen. Well, when I started to listen to Louis in earnest, he was living in the San francisco bay area at that time. Shay Black of Black Family reknown, who runs an Irish session in Berkeley. Mudcatters Dave and P.J. Swan, fine singers both. Mudcatters Radriano and Riggy - ditto. East bay Irish fiddler Bill Dennehy, an unsung hero. Berkeley singer Kate Brubeck - GREAT voice and interpretation. Irish harper Maureen Brennan (now with Wake The Dead). chanteyranger

Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: van lingle Date: 04 Jul 02 - 08:54 AM From the Washington DC area we had Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Emmylou Harris, The Country Gentlemen, The Seldom Scene, Ricky Skaggs and John Fahey. Not all of them originated in the area but were based there when I became aware of them (except Fahey who had long since moved west). I remember going down to the Silver Dollar on M Street with my fake ID after hearing a rumor that Jimi Hendrix was going to show up to jam with Buchanan. Jimi was a no-show but we heard a lot of great guitar anyway from Buchanan. vl |

Subject: RE: Your favorite homies! From: Les from Hull Date: 04 Jul 02 - 04:07 PM Also 'from Hull' - Mick Ronson, The Housemartins, The Beautiful South, Everything but the Girl. Oh, and the Watersons (my favourites, of course) |
