A rather supportive listener asked to hear some Whaling songs on my weekly radio show. If anyone reading this has promo recordings to send for our library please do. This listener would most probably appreciate hearing them on Appalachian Trail Vaguely Folk Music Show (WUWG, Carrollton, GA, USA) or MAYBE I should just tell him about MUDCAT!!!!

I just penned an e-mail to the rest of the band. If they all say cool, I'll send along a copy of 3 or 4 songs we do from the whaling tradition.

Jaysus! Sorry for the triple posting. From where I sit, I only made the post once.

"Whaling and Sailing Songs from the Days of Moby Dick" Paul Clayton (1956, Tradition TLP 1005, this exists on CD)

"Songs of Yankee Whaling" Bill Bonyun (1960, American Heritage Records, AHLP 1) this contains narration along with songs.

Both of these LPs contain primarily what are sea shanteys from the early/middle 19th century, so they reflect more songs that whalers would have sung more than songs about whaling per se. In that context a lot of other recordings of sea shanteys would also qualify.

There are some common songs that have been frequently recorded. "Greenland Whale fishery" has been recorded by Pete Seeger, Chad Mitchell Trio, Willson & McKee and many others, incuding the 2 album above. "Bonnie Ship the Diamond" has a number of recordings also, Judy Collins come to mind without looking further. There is Stan Rogers' rendition of "Rolling Down To Old Mauie". For more modern songs try "Ode to Big Blue" by Gordon Lightfoot or any of several recordings of the Andy Barnes song "Last of the Great Whales" (The latter is discussed some detail in earlier Forum threads.)

I'm just a volunteer DJ with no budget so unfortunately can't buy any recordings but will be happy to broadcast the best of what is sent in. Steve Sedberry, Radio Station WUWG, 1601 Maple St., Carrollton, GA 30118 http://us.geocities.com/sedberrysteve/radio.html
