Classic Sci Fi! Blake wasn't in it for much of its run. And there were rarely (if ever) Seven crewing The Liberator (even counting the computer)

I watched the very last episode. I remember thinking at the time how crass it was just to kill everyone off - like, we've got fed up with writing for this, so *******

I've tried watching it a couple of times on one of the local PBS affiliate channels. They get well into it, then they have a pledge break which pre-empts everything, then at the end of the break they don't get back to it. That's happened a couple of times, leaving the crew hanging in space and me wondering what ever happened to them. Same thing with some of the Britcoms.

I used to love the show as a kid. I wasn't a huge fan of killing everybody off though. Still, I've always enjoyed the theme in the opening. Anybody know what that was?

Madam Gashee. I too started watching the re-runs and gave up. I think the reasons are (1) there was very little science fiction on British TV at the time of "Blake's Seven" original series and (2) we have got much more sophisticated over the years. By the way the actor who played Blake, Gareth Thomas finished up on the series "Londons Burning."
Noreen: You were correct - "Servelan" was played by actress Jacqueline Pearce who also starred in the 1966 horror film "The Reptile" as Anna Franklyn in which she turns into a gigantic snake.

Ben, I have the theme in .wav format on my comp, I can send if you like. Also, it is debatable if they killed everyone off or not. There are well developed plans for a TV movie starring Paul Darrow based on the Napolian(sp?)-like imprisonment of Avon as he was never seen to be shot. There are always the rumours of stun clips... although I find that unlikely, especially for Dayna as she was shot by Arlan with a rebellion weapon not by feds as the others were.

There has been two, both set in series 4. One is the Sevenfold Crown and I don't know the other, all original cast doing the voices etc

Funnily enouh I saw it for the first time in, what? 30 years? When was it last on? Anyhow, it was on UK gold last night. Marvelous stuff. Servelan was realy sexy and Travis was a briliant counterpoint. Liberator and the computer whos' name I could not remember and was not mentioned were realy dated but what the hell;-) They could never beat Rodenberry but they gave him a good run for his money. Good on yer britscifi - Carry on doing it!

Cheers

I was a 'Blakie' for years. I don't know if they still have Blake's & conventions but I went to several in the eighties and great fun they were. I've even sung at them! (re written folk songs used to go down OK!). I tried putting Blake's 7 on a search recently and it brings up a society called 'Horizon' which has been going since the series was originally screened, with many of the same staff if my memory serves me correctly. Well worth a visit if you're interested.

They still have conventions although I've never made it to one yet. Hope to at some point though.

The computer on Liberator was Zen (Slave on Scorpio) and there was Orac too (the one that looks like a tupperware box)

Skipjack,

Jenna was played by Sally Knyvette. I think I saw her recently (well within the last couple of years!) in Casualty, or somthing similar.

Most of the cast has appeared in Casualty at some point including one episode where Gareth Thomas (Blake) and Micheal Keating (Vila) were both in as friends. Gareth Thomas is apparently going to pay a visit to Holby again in the near future.

Sally Knyvette was a long term regular in "Emmerdale Farm" as 'Kim Tate'.
HP: the re-writing of folksongs is still current. Put 'Filk' into your choice of search engine. The next British 'FilkCon' is in Feb. 2003, Search for 'Quinze' with your search engine.
After the first 'FilkCon' each had a name with a musical connection, and a reference to the 'serial number' of the convention.
The first was 'Contabile' (no numeric connection)
The second 'Con2bile'
The third 'Treble' 'FourPlay' 'Pentatonic' 'VIbraphone' 'Transept' 'Obliter8' (based on the song "Falling Down On Milton Keynes" in which MK was obliterated) 'Harmon IX' 'Decadence' 'XI lophone' 'DidgeriDouze' 'ConThiteena' 'Quinze' (a pun on 'Cannes' & a term for headphones)

Nigel,

Thank you for all the info re Filk. I will check out the Quinze details! It must be a dozen years or more since I last spoke to the friends I had made through B7 ... it would be quite fun to find out if any of them still had connections with the scene.

Edain, I'd love to get a copy of the music. Do you any other information on it (ie, composer, tittle)?
As a kid, I liked to believe that Avon wasn't shot as you say he was never shown getting shot. Although as I remember, you could hear him getting shot. If they did try a TV movie or something, I'd like to see what they could put together with a budget, which they REALLY lacked while on the air.

Another place to get sound bits of the show is http://www.b7sounds.com/ and the web site for information on the TV movie is www.blakes7.com.

As for the ending of Blake (the last episode) as the credits roll you do hear gunfire, although not all of it is standard federation weaponry (so my friend informs me) This has lead to countless speculation on fan sites about groups of rebels bursting in, the sounds being only symbolic and not part of the plot, and many other theories as to how AVon might have survived, although I think the most common is still the stun clips idea.

The odd thing is that when you read the transcripts, it's actually quite well written - good interplay between the characters. You can see it would work. It's just a shame it didn't carry on the screen, or at least that the production quality didn't stand the test of time. With modern TV and film, suspension of disbelief just isn't possible with that kind of setup, even though it was state-of-the-art at the time.

I reckon there's real mileage in reworking some of those old series. Blakes 7 and Doctor Who had good scenarios and some pretty good scripts - what they lack is just the modern SFX. Someone needs to suggest that the BBC make use of its resources.

On the plus side, Doctor Who is coming back, riding on the success of Buffy. So it's not all bad.

Graham.

Thanks Ed! I didn't realise it was that long (well, it really isn't THAT long)!
That's interesting that not all of the gun fire was federation. If that's true, that was genious on their part as it would lead to this kind of speculation and leave the door open for something like a TV movie.
Grab, I have to completely agree about the writing for Blakes 7. Honestly, I believe that with better special effects, the show and/or a movie could do very well.
