Awwww - do you wanna know what the lovely nutty did? She went to the trouble of singing the tune into her computer, saving it as a *.zip file - verse and chorus - and sending it to me...

Nutty - thanks heaps for doing that...

Briefly... we wanted the tune/song because we (some local musos and the Top End Folk Club) are recreating the music and dance from a post-war club of Darwin in the 50's - The Sunshine Club. Some of this music was presented at the National Folk Festival last April (Canberra), and also at the Top Half Folk Festival in June (Mary River NT) - it is leading up to be the centrepiece of the Festival of Darwin in August 2002.

This might be the last time the remaining original players present this music, there are not many of 'em left, and those that are left are 'getting on'. I'll write a bigger blurb about this for mudcat sometime, but just thought I'd quickly fill you in...

Again - Nutty, thanks a bundle for going to the trouble. It is said that the internet is full of 'randomn acts of senseless kindness' - yours was one of them...

I was hoping to find this. Here's what I remember from my mother's knee:

I have no idea how to spell yarkops but that's how my mother sang it; unfortunately she's gone now so I can't ask her.

If still of any interest, I am sure I have the original sheet music with lyrics my Grandmother had from her mother at the beginning of the 20th century. I'll hunt it out and post the lyrics if I can.

Thanks so much for your help. The key word was "breeches" instead of "britches", which also led me to "leetle" instead of "little".

Low and behold I found a link straight to the original sheet music from 1915.

My mum was a dancer with Madame Walker's dance troupe in the late 20s/early 30's and sang this and another song (in Dutch) in a nightclub in Holland. She taught it to me as:

Billy Walker recorded LITTLE BAGGY BRITCHES, Columbia 21566, in the 1950s. It's credited to Billy Walker & Mildred Burke. It seems to be an unrelated song:

Well, they call him Baggy Britches, but I'm glad to call him mine.

A record arrived for me yesterday from a seller on Ebay, of Carol Deene singing "A Windmill In Old Amsterdam" and on the B-Side was "Little Mr. Baggy Britches". I didn't know this until I received the record. It was a lovely surprise as my Grandmother used to sing it to me when I was small, back in the 1960s. The composer's name is listed as Darewski.

When I was a little schoolgirl in Melbourne, in the 1930's, we were dressed as little Dutch boys with baggy pants and clogs, and we sang
Little Mr. Baggy Britches and danced at school concerts. We used purple, not blue.
