Location : North West of England. I'm looking to buy a resonator guitar after seeing Ralph McTell in concert. I've tried a couple, with a wooden body, but have not yet found a full metal one to try out. Any 'Catters out there from the Manchester/Liverpool/Wigan area with some advice on where to get one. Also anyone with any advice/comments on resonators, especially with regards to difference between tone of metal / wooden body ? Much appreciated. Leighton.

I would think it's got to be worth your while travelling to London to the London Resonator Centre, 44 Duncan St.,London, N1 8BW.(tel-020 78339881)
They claim the "largest range of resonator instruments in the world. From budget guitars right through to rare & beautiful vintage National & Dobro instruments."
Sounds like the place to look and you can take a friend and make a day out of it!

It IS the most unique store of it's kind. A friend of mine (Pete Moles)from Tasmania sells his electric Molonators through the London Resonator Store and his brother traveled there last year on holiday. He gave a very high rating to the proprietors and said the store is a fantastic thing to see. If you can't make it down to the "Smoke" try emailing them and they may be able to direct you to a dealer closer to home. I think the website has a message board also.

Filter on "resonator" over the last 2 years, and you'll come up with a bunch of threads. Mostly with good info from Tweed, who's ever so slightly totally expert on resonators. ;-)

Graham.

Go and see Dave Bresnan at Frets in Fazakerly. He's the main Northern dealer of bluegrass instruments - banjos, mandolins and Dobros (resonator guitars). He's a very helpful guy, and totally knowledgeable.
Frets Old & New, 294 Longmuir Lane, Fazakerly, Liverpool, Merseyside, L9-9BZ. Tel: 0151-520-1275

Cheers
Ray

Thanks for all the info. Much Appreciated.

I've talked to a couple of shops, and I'm popping into Frailers (Runcorn) tonight. Talked to a very informative guy on the phone yesterday evening. He's got some Nationals in. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Leighton.

You could try The Music Room (www.the-music-room.com), there is a few resonators in their current catalogue starting from £249.

Well I've tried a National Type O at Frailers. What an instrument, would it to be much to say it even makes my playing sound good.

Frailer's - What a treasure trove. Nationals and Dobros in abundance with more new ones coming in. A very friendly and extremely helpful chap chatted with me - giving advise and quite some time. No pressure tactics. Just an obvious affection for his guitars, banjo's and mandolins.

Thanks Frank, and as Arni says "I'll be back".
