It was indeed Dave Webber...

WATCH AND CHAIN
(Dave Webber)

Ch:
Me father gave I watch and chain the day that I left home
Me mother she cried bitter tears and begged me not to roam,
As I laid aside me working clothes, put on me tunic fine,
And I went to serve His Majesty in the ranks of the second line.

From me father and me mother it was so hard to part,
But the leaving of me Jenny it nearly broke me heart,
For she knew I loved her dearly, and I knew that she loved me,
And she said when I returned again she'd share her name with me.

We sailed away next morning with no-one to shed a tear,
And we laughed and joked quite heartily; 'twas only to hide our fear,
For the wouldn't say where we were going, or what we had to do;
But the man from Kitchener told us we'd be back in a week or two.

We stood fire in French-named places and we fought across the Seinne,
But 'twas in the fields of Flanders I thought I'd met me end.
But the one that watches up above, or was it love that shielded me?
I arrived home safe in England to take me bride to be.

While I'm taking tunes down from Johnny Collins' Pedlar of Songs, here's his version of the tune (and as Dave sang on it and produced it, he's presumably OK with it). The verses are essentially the same tune as the chorus, except for the last verse, which alters on the last lines, and is included here.

Mick

Me/ fath-er gave I/ watch and chain the/ day that I left/ home
Me/ moth-er she cried/ bit-ter tears and/ begged me not to/ roam,
As I/ laid a-side me/ work-ing clothes, put/ on me tun-ic/ fine,
And I/ went to serve His/ Ma-jes-ty in the/ ranks of the sec-ond/ line.//

We stood/ fire in French-named/ pla-ces and we/ fought a-cross the /Seine,
But 'twas/ in the fields of/ Flan-ders I/ thought I'd met me/ end.
But the/ one that watch-es/ up above, or was it/ love that shield-ed/ me?
I ar-/rived home safe in/ Eng-land to/ take me bride to/ be.//

Dave used to sing this at the Somers FC (every Fri, Albion Worcester) when it was at the Somers Arms years ago. Instant appeal first time I heard it.
