I have oft been sceptical of the merits of songwriting competitions organised by festivals, as it depends what the judges like as to how well your particular composition is received, but I entered the Plymouth Folk Festival songwriting comp (trad section) last year, with my song 'Hevva' and came fifth, I heard the other songs I was up against, and was in agreement with the judges, who had a really difficult task.>br> This year I entered 'The Labourer's Year' and heard yesterday that I have won the traditional section - I am delighted!
If any of you out there are sceptical, I would say give it a go, if you don't win, it doesn't mean your song is no good, it just means that either the judges had different taste or there were others as good or better - and keep trying!

Congratulations! I know what you mean about competitions and it does depend on the judges, but it's a great honor and it sure must be good to know that people knowledgeable about traditional music appreciate your rendition enough to give you first prize!

I remember as we were rushing off to get to Roger Bryant's Stithian's night someone said that thye were in the Cornwall Songwriters with him. Was that you?

Yes it is really encouraging and makes me feel that maybe it is worth writing. Its a real boost to the confidence and I am gobsmacked and honoured!
Perhaps congratulations should also go to Duncan McFarlane of Leeds, W. Yorks, who came second in the trad song with 'Bed of Straw' and third in the contemporary song with 'Not PC', To Diana Franklin of Somerset, who came third in the Traditional section with 'Rise the Lark, to Brett Huckfield of Oldbury West Midlands, who came FIRST in the contemporary song with'Watching the Waters' and Robert Spiers from Maidstone in Kent who came second in the contemporary section with 'Time in Colour'
I do not know if any of these people are catters, but do give them a pat on the back if you know them.

Kernow John, yes, you did meet me at Dartmoor Day of Folk, I did actually sing the winning song there - one of its first airings - at the sing around in the morning. As one of the newest members of the Cornwall songwriters, I have done very little with them, having become a part of them post Cry of Tin. This sort of makes up for having to sit back and look like a hanger on!
Anybody, incidentally who thinks that they cannot write songs, so did I, I started writing poetry as a child, but was never able to put music to ot. I wrote my first song in 1999, so am fairly new to it. Go on, give it a go!

I would like to make a CD in the near future, but funds need to be raised! As for the Mudcat CD, I don't know, how does one go about getting on it? Now that would be an honour!!

You must be grinning ear-to-ear...

And as a writer, even if I'm not a musical one, I can say that if you enjoy the process of writing, even if no one else ever hears your work, it is always "Worth it" (though nothing beats the feeling of knowing that you are reaching people and they they like being reached)
