My guess is that it's like being asleep.

I wouldn't mind that. I feel quite tired right now.

Is there another adventure ahead? What do you think?

I'm sure that I will meet my parents, my sister and others who are dead. I will spend some time there (In another dimension) and then - if I haven't done what I was supposed to do - I (that is my soul) will probably come back here with another body to keep struggling with my homework...

As I've had contact with my parents through? mediums I know they still exist somewhere... They were still there after almost 20 years so I don't know if/when they will return...

Any comments to this?

Berit

When you die you go to sleep , and you sleep forever. It's like you never wake up.

And you nevermore have to watch these frigging awful movies like "The Shining" or "The Sixth Sense" which pander to the (understandable and forgiveable, but erroneous) notion that we somehow live on after we have shuffled off this mortal coil.

In some places they mourn your passing and in other places they celebrate your having lived. Since none of us really knows what happens when you die my spiritual advice would be this:
Give yourself the best chance you can, and come from one of those places were they celebrate.
(Of course the mourning/celebrating thing may not be cultural or spiritual at all, it might just depend on what kind of a guy you were.)

I was determined not to treat this seriously but I can't help myself:
We humans (or a good many of us) are sufficiently arrogant to believe that we are the most important beings not only on Earth but in the universe.
Similarly we allow ourselves to believe that this piddling life we are working on is the reason for all that has been, all that is, and all that is yet to be.
If our position in the whole catastrophe is somehow determined by our attitude, (which is not an unreasonable suggestion), we don't give ourselves much of a break, do we?

I'm much influenced by the fact that no one ever HAS come back to tell what's next. Whenever a reported case of reincarnation is properly investigated, it falls apart. In my mind, if there are no proven instances of a thing, it's likely it doesn't exist; as in an afterlife.

I heard it explained that it is like being born. No one ever goes back into the womb to tell the others what living is like because they just wouldn't understand it.

well, perhaps the spiritual folk will get what theyexpect, and the rest of us doubters will get what the spiritual ones say we'll get, hmmm?...but I doubt it.

It's interesting to speculate, but since there are 27 (at least..*grin*)different opinions, I don't feel qualified to guess, so I'll just wait and see...or not see....

What happens? You live...in an interesting variety of ways, depending on your state of consciousness, your beliefs, etc... If you need a rest, you most likely get one for a while. If not, then not. There are probably a million or so different ways of being "dead" which do not involve eating at McDonald's or viewing reruns of "I Love Lucy" or "Survivor", and I find knowing that most comforting! :-)

I can tell you one thing for sure...your BODY dies. For those who think that they are simply a body, that is apparently the end of the story. If it makes you happy to believe such a thing, fine with me.

The body dies, the spirit, soul, essence goes on. Those of us who believe in reincarnation believe that we return to live many lives in the earth on our way to enlightenment and to one day become perfect, and reunited with the creator. If you don't believe this, well, you can just go to hell thats all!

I have had three personal experiences with people AFTER they have passed. These were all private and alone ... and remain that way. Bride Judy has had two experiences. I also know of someone I trust that has had one. My point is this: Something can happen to connect the person who has passed with those close persons still left alive. I can't explain it, I won't even try. But I know the experiences were real. It's 'gonna be an adventure. And, as someone else already commented, don't even try to shove your christian faith at me ... Interesting, Deckman...my father, who is basically a completely materialistic atheist, had an undeniable encounter with the spirit of his dead brother a few weeks after the brother's passing. It shocked the hell out of him! Oddly enough, it has not caused him to have any greater interest in the matter of life after death...he prefers to avoid thinking about such things at all...it would get in the way of making money and being a success in business too much, wasting valuable time thinking about stuff like that...

That's the way he sees it. Better to just forget about the whole thing as quickly as possible, right? :-)

I'm not sure that one mudcatter is more "spiritual" than another, though I suppose that depends on your definition.

I can't find any reason not to believe the only one who died and had multiple credible eyewitnesses that He lived again. He said, "I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you may be also." Either he spoke the truth or he lied. He spoke enough truth about other aspects of the human condition that it doesn't seem reasonable to believe he was lying about this part.

I agree with those who don't think it's necessarily a matter of 'spirituality' to believe that the essence of EACH person- and I suspect, any being, animal or whatever that is capable of feeling/responding to love- goes on in some dimension we don't understand. (Not necessarily spiritual- just smarter! :) ) A lot of evidence points to it, and not a lot of evidence points to the theory of dead, dead, dead. Science has long known that things change, they are not destroyed. The strange thing is that most of the people who believe that with our last breath we cease to be also make good scientific arguments in other matters. They tend to have this one teeny blind spot.

People who think we are our bodies have a hard time explaining love, imagination, longings, dreams for something better - and a host of other things, including hatred.

One of the reasons I believe in reincarnation is that, assuming that we are meant to learn something while we are here in this form, the 3-day old baby and the 90-year old elder at their deaths cannot possibly have learned the same lessons. If the spirit of an entity is who we are, then it makes a great deal of sense to plug that spirit repeatedly into whatever it needs to learn. Very tidy. And non-wasteful. We know that nature simply does not waste anything.

Remember the song - I think it's called The Highwayman- with Kristofferson, Jennngs, Cash and Nelson? "I'm still alive. I survive."

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
whatever we were to each other
that we still are
call me by my old familiar name
speak to me in the easy way
which you always used
put no difference in your tone
wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together
pray smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
without the trace of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
it is the same as it ever was
there is unbroken continuity
why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you
somewhere very near
just around the corner
All is well

I would like to believe in an afterlife of some sort. If not then this earthly life is of no consequence. I believe the body dies but the spirit must carry on somewhere. If there is reincarnation then I want to come back as an eagle, or else a better banjo player than I am now.

I think I may have had real contact with a neighbour who had been dead for about 3 days. This happened about 55 years ago, I was 7 years old at the time. I was bringing a shovel full of coal in for the fire and she was standing in my path.(it was dark). I was so afraid that I flung the coal at her, it just passed through her and then she disappeared. It shocked me so much that I developed a speech problem that required many months of therapy to cure. I told my parents, neighbours and the speech therapist but they all said it was probably my imagination as I was very fond of this lady. I was only 7 years old at the time but remember it like it was yesterday. I still get shivers when I remember that experience, sometimes I wish it would happen again so that I would have a chance to maybe speak with her.

From: Gervase

The words of Herbert Read were used wonderfully this time last year at the funeral of Rod Shearman - who lived and died as a Communist and a proud atheist - and I think for those of use who find the 'spritual' thing a bit tricky they are a pretty good summation of what life and death mean:

The death of each of us is in the order of things: it follows life as surely as night follows day.
We can take The Tree of Life as a symbol. The human race is the trunk and branches of this tree, and individual men and women are the leaves, which appear one season, flourish for a summer, and then die.
I too am a leaf of this tree and one day I shall be torn off by a storm, or simply decay and fall - and become part of the earth about its roots.

But, while I live, I am conscious of the tree's flowing sap and steadfast strength. Deep down in my consciousness is the consciousness of a collective life, a life of which I am a part, and to which I make a minute - but unique - contribution.
When I die and fall the tree remains, nourished to some small degree by my manifestation of life. Millions of leaves have preceded me and millions will follow me: but the tree itself grows and endures."

"... the consciousness of a collective life, a life of which I am a part, and to which I make a minute - but unique - contribution."

And then there's Rabindranath Tagore:
It was beautiful
As long as it lasted,
The journey of my life.
I have no regrets whatsoever
Save the pain I'll leave behind -
Those dear hearts who love and care -
The strong arms who held me up
When my own strength let me down.
At every turning of my life
I came across good friends,
Friends who stood by me
Even when time raced by me.
Farewell, farewell, my friends,
I smile and bid you goodbye.
No, shed no tears
For I need them not -
All I need is your smile.
If you feel sad
Do think of me
For that's what I'll like.
When you live in the hearts of those you love,
Remember then - you never die.

Both of those, for me, are passages that provide comfort in the face of mortality. And, after all, it was our unique sense of mortality that made us invent the gods.
In the words of that other great doubter, Samuel Butler:
"I fall asleep in the full and certain hope
That my slumber shall not be broken:
And that though I shall be all-forgetting,
Yet I shall not be all-forgotten -
But continue that life in the thoughts and deeds Of those I loved ..."

Whenever you see a hearse go by,
Think to yourself, you've got to die.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

They nail you into a big wooden box,
Then cover you over with dirt and rocks.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

The worms crawl in the worms, the worms crawl out,
They crawl in skinny, they crawl out stout.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

Your face falls in, your eyes fall out,
Your brains come sniveling down your snout.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

Your skin turns black, the flesh turns green,
The puss squirts out like Devonshire cream.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

All these things will happen to YOU,
Unless you're cremated and go up the flue.
Oo-oo-oo-oo – Where will we be in a hundred years from now ?

Well, I'll tell you what science is good for. It's good for telling you what happens to the body when we die.

However, I don't need science to tell me that. "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."

I am not my body, I'm just in it making use of it at the moment. When it's worn out, I'll move on.

That's a funny question. LOL.

Science can't tell us. There is insufficient data to deduce whether there is continued existence after death or not, and if there is, what is it like. You just can't say "yes" or "no" based on science.

"Feelings" can't tell us. The mind is a tricky number, with complex chemicals sloshing around amid totally bizarre patterns of electrical discharges. Subject to massive influence by the culture in which one is raised, one might think a supreme being has four arms, or a big beard, or a coyote head, or no clothes on, or there is none, etc, etc ad infinitum. And the cultural influences are overlaid on millions of years of an evolutionary mish-mash of anatomy and brain development.

Logic can help you evaluate the issue, and I admire the posters above who tried to put some logic to it, whether for or against life after death. Logic tells me several things:

Listen to the people you most admire when evaluating questions of this type.

Consider the fact that most primitive cultures, from early in the neolithic, seemed to become aware that there may be a life after death (based on treatment of burial of human remains). Does this indicate that (a) once the brain reached a certain stage in development survival of the species was enhanced by intellectual processes that led the human mind to create deities and an imagined life after death, or (b) that evolution to humanity allowed us to be aware of the creator and an afterlife?

Conversely, did intentional atheism develop in our culture because we wised up or because we became too surrounded by concrete and plastic and teevee (LOL), and because we have become sheltered from the influences that inspired the need for faith in an afterlife?

Five elements of the culture in which I was raised speak loudest to me personally:

1. The modern proverb that says "There are no athiests in foxholes."

2. The bible quotation where Peter says to Jesus, "Lord, to whom else would we turn?"

3. Another quote from the bible, where Jesus says "What did you go out into the desert to see, a reed swayed by the wind?"

4. A spiritual feeling I have had at several times when truly in the wilderness, both desert and mountain, a rare event which most people in our culture have never experienced. (There we go, "feelings" again. LOL!)

5. The fact that the people I admire most and are the most holy have at least an inkling that there is an afterlife.

What do the experiences of your life tell you? You've got to decide for yourself (realizing of course that not to decide is to decide). And no, I don't think it is a coincidence that both bible quotations noted above are questions.

Regards,

A lot of the belief in an "after life" comes from the time we were forced to adopt agriculture. In this system 95% of the people are at the shit end of a very long stick. The minority used their power expressed through organised religion (and force of arms) too coerce the majority into believing that they would be rewarded for slavery in this life with a better one in "heaven". This jam tomorrow approach was brought to its evil perfection by the concept of reincarnation. This moral slight of hand corrupts human culture by telling people that, not only will they get their reward when their dead, but that its their fault they're in the shit in the first place. In India it is used to justify racism against the dark skinned aboriginal inhabitants. I do however take hope from knowing that most of the Egyptian pharohnic tombs were robbed shortly after they were sealed, so not every one got brainwashed. All the best PP

Love, Annamill
