Of teetotalers...

There's man a man both young and strong
has been brought to his sarcophagus
Through pouring water, icy cold
Down his warm oesophagus.

or, if you prefer, a toast:

"Here's to a temperance supper
With water in glasses tall, With coffee and tea to finish...
And me no where near it at all."

Walrus (heading for the pub)

An excellent record to track down is this one The Tale of Ale which was released by Free Reed Music of Belper, Derbyshire about 1976 and later as a CD in the 1990's.
The clicky is to a fairly old website. There aoppears to be a new website for Free Reed records, but it doesn't seem to work at present.
Happy listening
Geoff!

Just thought - it might have been "Our Faith" as in the girl he done wrong....

Any Faiths care to comment?

I remember Dave Bryant' version, but verse 3 got modified in the 1970s to "Some folks is teetotallers, they drink Watneys neat".

I always thought the second verse was "Our MP's in Parliament our faith for to keep" rather than "our safety" - not sure that either is plausible, really.

Dear brid, how nice to have a cultured person posting lyrics, it's a shame there aren't more like you, I could do with a few more verses.

Another chorus collected by the famous (infamous) MCFat

Ale Ale glorious ale served up in pewter it tells its own tale
some folk like pewter some folk like glass
but give I a pint of bitter that's served up in plastic
and you can shove it up your arse

My third line in that verse always goes
"but good lads of England(or change to something more locally appropriate)well they'll never fail" The other lines as per the Dave Bryant version above. Cheers, JohnB

Yes thank you all for the help. I dont know why it didnt pick up from the words " Oh good ale thou art my darling" but it didnt seem to have a clue. It found "ale ale glorious ale" without much problem, and thanks for the extra verse which is the one I wanted- I dont suppose there are others?

Dave Bryant's sounds more convincing than mine, maybe I'm mixing up two verses.

From memory the missing verse is:

Now take all totallers That drinks water neat
It must rot their gutses And give them damp feet
But take my advice and you'll never grow stale
If you drink gaffer's health in a pint of good ale

I might have garbled that up a bit though.

There's at least another verse to GLORIOUS ALE:

Now take all tea-totalers wot drinks water neat,
It must rot their gutses and give 'em danp feet.
But I always always say that a man cannot fail,
On boiled beef and 'taters and a pint of good ale.

Good Ale is here in the DT; not sure why you couldn't find it, but I've been caught out before myself!

I'm looking for the words to the song O good ale thou art my darling, and a fuller version of the ale ale glorious ale , served up in pewter etc. I can't find the former in the lyrics directory, and there appears to be some verses missing for the latter. I remember the lines It must rot their gutses, and give them damp feet, which refers to other countries drinks. can anybody fill in these verses, and maybe post them in the directory?
