My son was the youngest ever singer in the Anchor Middle Bar at Sidmouth when he was three...a fact of which he is very proud, and he sings in there every year. (He is now eleven) My six year old daughter was very reluctant to sing in public (Never could stop the son!) until last year when she sang (In the Middle Bar) a song from school called "Ockie tockie onga". She was absolutely thrilled when everyone, after listening to pick it up, joined in. She has now got herself a song book and is writing song words. She can't wait to sing there again this year. The stuff she sings may not be classed as 'folk' but at least she's singing!! PS Congrats Harry. Isn't it great when your kids get into something that means so much to you. As long as they go on, we will continue.

My daughter, Kate( not quite 16 ), sang unaccompanied at the Open Door folk club last night! She surprised me totally with a rendition of Kate Rusby's 'The Cobblers Daughter' - - I was very, very proud!

(Sorry..........I just had to share this!)

Heh...

Nice, their cover of a cover of Rasputin...

Kinda like Metallica ripping off Thin Lizzy when they covered Whiskey In The Jar...

Do ya think Flying Folk is paying royalties to Boiled In Lead???

Paddy Nagillia is also kinda neat....

The rest, I have to admit, left me pretty cold...

The web site says "contains 15 original tracks"??? Ya?? Drunken Sailor and Which Side Are You On are ORIGINAL???

I'd like to see 'em live, but from back near the beer tent so if they continued to not impress me, I'd be a quick walk away...

Does 20 count as young? I just don't have the time to devote to laying music at the moment - too busy trying to get my bachelors! But most of my friends listen to folk, as well as rap, goth, rave, rock, metal, country, etc.

I think that's the difference, maybe? Many of us listen to a lit of different genres so it's not as apparent that we're folkies, too. But if you go to Appel Farm or the Potomac Celtic Festival, then you'll see plenty of little ones and teens and twenty-somethings wandering around. Myself included.

There was a great group of young 20s aged people here in VA called Roaring Mary, but then they got a little older and started getting jobs in other parts of the state/nation and so they no longer exist. They were gooood, tho.

A lot of teenagers are getting into folk music through Village Harmony - choral camp followed by a brief tour. They do a lot of shape note and gospel, as well as (for example) African and Eastern European music. They encourage a lot of talented kids, many of who grow into talented young adults.

As for myself, I may no longer qualify as young - at least not that young - although those who remember me as a kid and then teenager in the Folklore Society of greater Washington will probably always see me as a young folk!

Actually, if the young people weren't listening to their elders playing, they wouldn't be playing circles around their elders the way so many of them do nowadays.

I have always thought that youth should listen to the music of their elders, not all the damn begrudgery and cynicism that comes with it.

Where are they?

Try sessions, try the right morris sides, try ceilidhs, try IVFDF, try festivals

Just forget folk clubs made up of old farts who still imagine that after 30 years they are the young radical cutting edge of folk music.

Leadfingers - that's a very sorry state of affairs - summarised even more brutally, it says:
"We'd rather play than listen"
That's not going encourage anyone's musical progress, if it's true. Think of any number of Jazz musicians (especially) who, when interviewed about their lives, spend a lot of time telling you who they listened to when they were younger.

As for those kids and their 'old farts' implication, I did the Irish music craze thing in the 70's, it's old hat. I'm far more encouraged by young musicians in England who are passionate about continuing the revival and recognition of English music.

On an only slightly different branch of the topic:
I was amazed a couple of weeks ago when taking part in the last ever official dance out with Angel Morris at Barnes Fair (big "village" on outskirts of West London) and we attracted the genuine interest various teenage girls, one of whom was overheard to remark that morris dancing was 'cool'. Had we been thirty years younger this might have been more credible...
Angel Morris are giving up because we're getting too old, too unfit and there aren't enough younger recruits.

Maybe there's some hope for the future after all.

During term time Chris McShane runs the Barnsley Junior Folk Ensemble on wednesday evenings at the Performing Arts Development Centre in Barnsley, S. Yorkshire. He has approx. 30 members from 6 years old upwards, playing guitar, fiddle, flute, mandolin, banjo, autoharp, mouth organ, bodhran and other percussion. They've played at Holmfirth, Clocks Back, Barnsley and Wath Folk Festivals, concerts all over the borough, Halifax Piece Hall, a tour of Scotland last year, one to the North East this Autumn.

Chris will again be running the children's festival orchestra at Whitby Folk Week this year, for children of eight years upwards.

Having met a lot of very talented youngsters at (mostly) Irish sessions and asked them if they ever go to their local Folk Club, the consensus seems to be 'why go to a folk club for two numbers a night and have to listen to boring old farts like me'when they can play all evening at a session.

So far all I say is interesting...

But

"acoustic renditions of disco standards"

When did this become the standard??? Seems like every young band I've ever seen is doing this stupidity... It seems to imply that folk music in it's own won't cut it, and they have to throw the audience a familliar bone to keep them on thier side...

sad but true?

The main problem for younger players does seem to be finding other people to play with, and places where they can do it; it wasn't easy when I started to learn back in the 1970s, either. Round here (Sheffield UK) there are at least some opportunities now; a "folk orchestra" for (mainly) pre-teens; workshops (some of the Pack/422 started out there) and at least one pub session where the youngest player (cello) is about 12; though he does have to come with his mum, who plays fiddle, and most of us are a lot older than he is. I've been transcribing tunes into bass clef for him, as he isn't used to playing by ear yet, though he'll pick it up soon enough. By then, he probably won't want to play with oldies like us, but, if we've done our job properly, he'll be better placed to find people of his own age to work with, and should be comfortable with other musicians of any age in the future.

I guess that's the best we can do; older players need to understand the impatience of the young, and younger players need to appreciate the experience of their elders. It's always likely to be an uneasy compromise, but with mutual good will we can accomplish a lot. The music, after all, is more important than our own fragile egos, and will outlive us all.

I've been playing folk stuff for about 7 years...19 when I started guitar, whistle, concertina. I had/have the same problem that MikeOQuinn has with others my age not being as interested. We seem to be spaced out a bit.

I survive by jamming with people twice my age. I always wanted to put something together with other 'Generation X'ers that had the energy seen in old Fairport/Albion/Steeleye/WolfeTones/Silly Wizard -ish stuff.

Hopefully I'll succeed before the Arthritis sets in!

half the trouble is, if you meet in a pub on a weekday night, including kids can be tricky so they don't get into it. We're lucky, our venue has no bar in it and we run at the weekend, so we do have a few younger members. If you want young folkies (for whatever dubious reasons....) you've got to have folk in places they can go to.

Guest, 1st guest

I'll tell you why I didn't respond to your first message: I barely noticed it. It was so short, and as Susan said, it didn't seem to have anything to do with the thread title. So I read past it, to other people's posts, and soon forgot there was a URL there at all.

If the thread title is a question, I assume the initial poster is asking that question, not answering it. So if I see a post called "how do you tune a mandolin?" I don't expect a URL of a site that tells you how to tune a mandolin. That would go under, say, "New site for tuning mandolins." And if your goal is to promote a great new band, a thread title like "Great New band" is probably your best bet. I don't think you were negative, I just didn't get what you were driving at, and I suspect a lot of others here did the same.

Hrmm. I was wondering about this, myself. I myself am 19, I play guitar, upright bass, mandolin, pennywhistle, fife, and am learning fiddle, dobro, mountain dulcimer, banjo, and saxophone. I've been playing folk, cowboy, country, and celtic music for the past 5 or so years. I've just had problems getting people in my age group interested in joining in the fun.

Well, as a 23 year old folk musician and enthusiast, the trap that I always try to avoid is being too subservient to the tastes of my generation. I try to keep my ears open to new sounds and approaches, but at the same time, 85 percent of the music I love is at least 20 yrs old. I think it has something to do with the modern mass corporation culture, the fact that there seems to be so much more depth and time tested truth to, say, the music of Percy French or the Clancys as compared to someone like Lil' Bow Wow or Ol' Dirty Bastard. Also, a lot of the folk music that we're discussing here has been played for generations by younger AND older musicians...It's truly a genre rooted in oral transmission, which involves a cooperative approach. At the same time, sometimes I feel like a 60 yr old trapped in this body...

As I re-read my previous post to this thread, I realized that the wording may have given the impression of a negative attitude toward young folkies. "They're all over the damn place", was not meant to be disparaging. I LOVE the little buggers.

When I first started going to festivals, sessions and picking parties in my early twenties (Circa 1973) I was flabergasted at how easilly the older musicians accepted us young "kids". We had just come out of the Sixties, and, for many of us, the "generation gap" was real. Our parents couldn't stand the music we listened to. Finding common ground with people of my parents' and even grandparents' age through music was a real eye-opener.

Many forms of music transcend age. Classical, jazz, country and even rock all have talented musicians of all ages. Folk music just happens to take it a step further by passing on not just a body of work and a style of performance, but a sense of community as well.

Bruce

I made half a joke about "Alt-Folk". I hear a lot of it these days. But, as I cruise the open stages (still the best way to publicize a local gig). I find more and more young people going back, at least, as far as folk revivalists. When one steers them toward those people from whom the revivalists learned it's fun to watch the look of wonder and revealation croos thier faces.

Hey. I've gotta have SOME fun.

Susan, how could I have been more positive? I thought I WAS being positive! What is negative about the way I posted--I did it to get people's attention here. There have been a number of threads here in recent months about the lack of young people in folk music. I was calling attention to young people who ARE involved in folk music. I gave the web address, so people could have a listen for themselves. Short, sweet, and to the point.

Why are you making me out to be the bad guy here? Aren't the people who made the initial snide comments accountable for their so-called contributions to the thread?

And how can me giving a review be better than giving the web address where people can hear the group for themselves? And like I said, why all this judgmental stuff, but no comments on the subject of this thread--the great music of the Flying Folk Army?

Why not give a listen to the group, before criticizing young people with good intentions and motivations.

WHY WHY WHY are people here so hard on young folkies?

Guest, we are just doing what we do around here-- responding to the thread title. I don't think any of the comments were directed at you or the people you were pointing out.

If you want to promote the group, there might have been better ways to go about it. Try another thread with another title. A review of a CD, for example, would be pretty normal around here.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but down here in the Sunshine State they're all over the damn place! The under-30 (hell, even the under-21) set was well represented at the recent Florida Folk Festival, particularly in the State Fiddle Contest. They may have blue hair & The Hornpipe Police may need to give a few of them tickets for playing "Harvest Home" way too fast, but some of them sure can pick and they seem to have a blast doing it.

The first person to respond to our flyer we distributed at a local bluegrass festival, about getting together to jam, is 19, had bought a banjo already, and more than anything else wanted people to play with. Who knows how many more like her are out there?

There's a local used-book flea-market store that put in a line of cheap guitars. I mean CHEAP. Who do you suppose hangs out there? Kids. Big rangy teenage boys with time and nothing to do, and itchy fingers that know what to do when they meet up with a smooth neck.
