Cllr... we had a good outside singaround in the garden of the Bowling Green but the beauty of Warwick is that just about everything happens on site.... the Moor & Coast tent had a brill singaround into the wee small hours last year... and a hint ..you MUST stay for the last concert... !!

Cllr

The Birthday Girls are planning a day trip on Saturday (yes, I know I said this about Alcester and didn't make it, but this time Helen's expecting me to pick her up on Saturday).

And yes, there's a lot happening on site, but there's also a bus to take you round to the other venues in the town.

2 years ago we found a very nice lunchtime singaround on the Saturday run by Dave and Anni (with various MBS in attendance, including Chris Gorniak and Steve Thomason) and I can remember where the pub was but not what it was called....

Kitty

PS the posting system seems to have gone wrong, so this may turn up in duplicate. Apologies.

Just got back from a VERY hot Warwick which was excellent as usual. The return of Loose Chippings as a finishing act was a special treat.

Thanks to all the Mudcats who bothered to sign in. We ended up with 36 names on the sheet, which is a reasonable gathering in anyones eyes, and we know of several others who were there but didn't bother.....

We also talked about Mudcat to quite a lot of people who may well soon become members - and so the 'Cat grows.

Watch out for us at other festivals, Saltburn is next and then the second half of Whitby (can't afford the whole week).

To those of you who ordered badges : yes you will get them (eventually!!)

Love'n'hugs, Tig

This is Fionn's daughter Sorcha writing. It was absolutely brill! I really liked the swimming pool, and so did my friends, Tom and Catherine, and their friends. Also I made friends with Kat (Firecat) not forgetting her cats Penny and Wibble.

The weather was really HOT but that was great! I liked Loose Chippings and Keith Donnelly best, and they did a really cool finale. Also the band that started the finale off were really good, especially the Irish dancer who came on when they were playing. I really liked her.

I'm glad Firecat persuaded my dad (FIONN) to let us stay right to the end. Then I fell asleep and thought the ride home was about 15 minutes but it was really about 2 hours.

See you all again I hope. In the meantime I'm going back to Ireland in about two weeks where I live mostly. Love SORCHA (age 10).

Hi Sorcha, Tom and Catherine's mum here! It was lovely to meet you and your dad (at long last); only sorry I didn't have more time to chat with you, with all that was going on, musically as well as the craft activities and swimming :0)

We all had a wonderful time; our first time at Warwick, and Tom and Catherine's first BIG festival. Tom was in great demand at the ceili (not least from Sorcha...) and Catherine had such a good time she wants me to take her to Hull(!) Festival so she can meet up again with new found friends.

VERY hot, sunny and dry: Mrs Lemon's Lemonade stall did a roaring trade (good to see you again Sally), Shellbacks' performances were received very well, new contacts and new friendships made.

All in all, one of the best festivals I've ever been to. Thanks to all who made it so :0)

Missed it last year because I was in Greece or some such boring place - not nearly as good as Warwick and only one or two degrees hotter! Won't be booking any more holidays to clash with it thats for sure. Wouldnt have missed that final concert for the world - who'd have believed so many grown ups (questionable I know) could have so much fun doing very silly things

I meant to chip in after Sorcha's contribution in my name, but I was forced off air by a spectacular storm that had been brewing all evening and during which it would have been folly to leave the modem plugged into the PSTN.Anyway I was happy to wile away a bottle of wine watching the celestial fireworks and re-aclimatising to UK-type temperatures.

Noreen, a huge thanks to Tom, whose patience was heroic, especially on the dance floor.

The school at which this festival is based seems to boast every facility you could shake a stick at - arts centre, living traditions centre, music centre, endless cricket, rugby, athletics and football fields, all on one perfectly flat level, and just a stone's throw from the town centre. A bit sickening really, speaking as a governor of two comps in the (nearly defunct) Nottinghamshire coalfield. But it makes for a great festival.

The Cocco the Clown Longballoon Dance Team are working on some new variations for next year so eatch this space. However some magic music na Dorsa were fab as were Les Chauffeurs a Pied and Last Nights Fun were exactly what they said on the tin Last Night's Fun

I warned you all about the sun screen....

It were grand, lots of good stuff and a well thought out programme. Some cracking female singers especially at the Women in Song on Sunday morning, dispite the early time of 11.00. everyone performed brilliantly. Thought the contrast between the funny Taggart and Wright duo and the serious songs by everyone else worked beautifully giving a rich tapestry of song. Bring them back next year.

if they LAST NIGHTS FUN are exactly as it says on the tin then Taggart and Wright who opened for them on Saturday were Afternoon Delight.

Yes I enjoyed the Women in Song as well but the highlight was the concert Dave Webber MCd in the Living Tradition Centre on Sunday afternoon. The best chorus singing I've ever experienced.

Yes, it was a great festival! Wonderful to see lots of friends again - even if I had to spend the Saturday in Bristol! Staying to lunchtime on Monday helped banish the feeling of being rushed.

John dead! Grey goose and the fox in the way of the morning ...
Alan

Some others might have been doing longsword. I was doing rapper (tappity tappity tappity tappity tap). Perhaps that's where we went wrong. I think it was a mite ambitious to suggest that we could 'turn' MC Fat, though.

We had a cracking time. Warm thanks to friends old and new, lovely weather, and alcohol for a great weekend.

Greetings all. Yeah, a tremendous festival, loved every minute. And the weather! Perfect, no wonder Mrs Lemon got "squeezed out" early. That Sunday afternoon concert which Dave Webber hosted in the Living Tradition Centre was stunning for superb traditional singing at its best, glorious harmonies. And then the sheer lunacy of the finale! Beautiful. We'll be back.

Andrew

Ned, I've got the words somewhere if you get desperate. I originally learnt them at school and think they are in one of the 190blob school song books from that time.

I've just about recovered - next time I'll just hand Mrs Lemon most of my money at the start of the festival!

Glad so many of you enjoyed the festival. We should all be grateful to people like Dick and his commitee who seem to have the knack not only of providing superb artists but also seems to be able to produce the weather as well.Next place for me on the festivals this year is Saltburn, do come and see another great smaller festival in a wonderful Victorian seaside town. See you soon

Hi you all, Got back late Monday after a cracking time at Warwick. Due to a poorly car, set off on the train and did not get there until 2.15p.m.on Saturday. Set up camp and went off to do my bit on the stewards side. Magician hobbled in at 10.45 after having dismantled wheels yet again to look at the brakes and spent nearly 2 hours in a accident traffic jam. Phew........

Both of us enjoyed the bits that we saw of the festival (time limitation, as we were at a big meeting in Brum on Sunday) and had some good crack with friends old and new. Enjoyed the blistering weather, hats are good! Thanks Dick and company for yet another stonking festival. Watch this space for news for next years festival.

Gillie & Magician

Hi there

Thought it was about time I joined.

Warwick was really brill. Lots of good singing, music and food and really well organised. Although it was much bigger than the last time I went, it didn't seem too big. Will go again! Thanks to all the organisers.

Steve

Hi Ned. Apparently it is a West Indian whaling shanty (or schantie if you prefer, Steve!), collected by Roger D Abrahams of the University of Texas. It was used for calling out the reluctant whalermen (the grey goose) to hunt the whale (the fox). I presume that the possibility of whaling might get in the way of a useful morning sunning oneself under a tree! That's all I know! But why were the whalermen reluctant and why is John dead?

who dig his grave?
Alan

Had a great festival -Hazel and I did lots of singing even though the poor lass had a stinking cold! Last night was crazy and Matthew now has the enviable boast of having his genitals manhandled by Denny Bartley during the Nellie the Elephant routine -couldn't get the smile off his face....

I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who bought lemonade.I was exhausted! Now my little ones will be fed and be warm in the winter. We had a great time. My son Joe loved Professor Panic. Daughter Charlotte and her friend Megan loved the clothes stalls and Lucie (fiddler with Kickin' Alice) actually stayed late at Moor and Coast session playing. (Did anyone have the reinforced hot chocolate? Wow!) At last she's found other musicians of her age (19) to jam with. Are there any more out there?

We've just come back from the welsh coast (Tywyn) having got wet in the rain many times!! What amazing weather we have in this country.

Anyone going to Stroud in September?

Sal

Just got home - took the long route via Telford and then got stuck on the outer Manchester ring road! My favourite bit was the late night/early morning singing in the Arts centre with Hazel and Linda et Al (you all know Al!) That building has some amazing acoustics.
Hope loose chippings are there again next year cos I was too poorly to attempt the Nellie conga and missed the dam busters completely!!

Hi, Alan and others

I don't really mind how we spell 'em, as long as we sing 'em!

Still as one Bromyard Schantieman to another...

By the way, apologies to whoever it was I told this was Stan Hugill's spelling - clearly it ain't - he uses 'shanty' throughout although he does discuss the various spellings and possible origins.

Did anyone notice how the bricks of the buildings radiated heat. They were so hot just to walk past. Pity that energy can't be used in some way?
