Subject: Why are dogs called Blue?
From: greg stephens

I can think of English and American songs in which dogs are called Blue. Is there some shade of grey referred to as "blue" when describing dogs? Or is it something to do with faithfulness, like true-blue, and Australians calling their mates "Blue". In which case, what has blue got to do with loyalty? Any theories/knowledge?

Some have a blue or blue merle coat, others have blue eyes. I'll see if I can find a picture of blue merle.

JR of stagestar remearks:

The hounds are for tracking. The poodle is a hunter. The original Russian poodle is bigger than a German Shepherd. The big dogs track big game, but the hunter is supposed to do the actual killing. Never let a big dog learn to pull down animals, especially if it is allowed to share in the feast. Your cow or sheep or cousin could be next.

Most of the time, though, I figured the job of the dog is to keep away people you want to see, dig up stuff you want covered up, cover up stuff you are trying to find, mess where you don't want a mess, go to sleep blocking the screen door and stink.

A blue tick hound is the ultimate specialist. A true blue tick can be checked. While the dog is sleeping (and it will be) you stand beside it. Reach down and grab a handful of skin on the side that is up, middle between the legs. Then stand up. If you still have dog in hand, and the dog still is on the floor, you got a blue tick. If the dog still is asleep, you got a blue ribbon tick hound.

Now, most time, a blue tick will kill the raccoon. Everything but the beaver. A blue tick on the chase will catch up with the prey, then stop to lift his chin and bay. The surprised fox will close in and grab a mouthful of throat. Upon which, the blue tick will walk around behind the fox and break a fox neck with a bite. The fox then will release his grip.

More'n you wanted to know, huh?

Australian blue heelers are also considered blue. Calling a dog blue is a reference to its color, which is actually a grey that tends to appear slate-blue, perhaps more so in certain light situations. It's akin to saying a person has red hair--it's not technically red (save for some dye jobs), but it's reminiscent of the color and that's what it's called.

Ticking is the name given to coloration at the end of a hair, when the tips are a different color than the rest of the fur. I always assumed that was why they were called Blue Tick hounds.

Thanks for the bluetick stuff Never heard of them( but I know damn-all about dogs)..But is there any tie-in with blue as in "loyalty" "trueblue" etc? For example , are dogs only called Blue(their name I mean like Fido or Spot) if they are blue as in "bluetick hound"? Anybody know a dog called Blue? Is it a bluetick hound?. And why do Australians call their mates Blue?. The oldest Blue dog song I know is c1770 English Lake District. It was certainly about a hunting dog, but I've never heard of a breed of blue or bluey-grey hunting dogs there.

I don't know if it's relevant (don't know that all much about different breeds of dogs), but I've seen hound dogs (bloodhounds, I think) that were an off-gray, verging almost on blue. I always assumed that was where "Old Blue" came from.

Quoted from American Kennel Club write-ups on coonhounds.
Modern Bluetick's color indicates that it descended from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne (French Staghound). George Washington likened their voices to the "bells of Moscow."
The American breeders broke away from the British standard in 1945 because they wanted to keep the lines of the larger, slower, cold-nosed resolute hounds that they preferred. The British breeders prefer a smaller, reddish, hot-nosed, faster hound.
Males 24-30 inches at withers, weight of males 55-100 pounds.
Color- dark blue, mottled, spotted by various-shaped black spots on back, sides and ears. Blue ticking should dominate over white in the body coat. Expression "pleasantly pleading." "Intelligent, pleasing companion."

Bluetick hounds are considered good for coon but I think Redbones are more reliable, they tend to not get lost as easy. Coon are also hunted with Black and Tans.

Blue heelers are probably the best cattle dog around and smart!

Ol' Yaller was a yellow hound of no particular parentage as I recall. I have a couple of friends who hunt coon and use a Redbone and a Black and Tan.

Bud Short, over in Augusta, Missouri hunts coon with beagles. Personally I don't like the sound Beagles make. Blue Ticks have a 'sweet' sound. Bud adds to the general cacophany by calling his dogs with a horn made from an African Eland. He used to work as a janitor in the school system and found the horn in the trash one day. The horn sounds more sweetly than those dang beagles!

My ladyfriend makes great roast coon, with potatoes and carrots and onions all roast together. Coon tastes sorta like beef but a little more greasy.

But if you look in our on site family album she is listed under the old bitch. Just another example of my Husbands warped sense of humor. "Blue" is a fairly common and acceptable color in a lot of breeds, esp. herding. Let's see how many I can think of:
Australian Cattle Dog (Blue/Red Heeler)
Australian Shepherd
Kelpie Cardigan Corgi (bluies show up in Pembrokes but are not acceptable to the standard)
Briard
Doberman (also called Isabella)
Wiemerener
Kerry terriers (actually called Kerry Blues)
Blue Tick hounds
Bouvier has a blueish color sometimes but it is called Grey
Border Collie???? (I think so, but mostly they are black/white)
Are Skye Terriers called "blue"? I don't know.

Anybody think of any more?

Australians call their mates "Blue" or "Bluey" only if they have red hair. Sort of an in-joke really. Probably not funny, I suppose, but it's sort of an indication of the contrary nature of Oz humour. If you're born with red hair then the first nickname you get is "Blue" and it sticks throughout your whole life. "Carrot-top" is less common because it's not as funny.

Oh, never mind. You have to be here, I suppose, to get the joke.

Here is what my AKC knowledgeable friend says about the color. I messed up on the Doberman--Isabella is fawn, not blue. Bear in mind that this is the AKC list only--Spaw says in Germany the blue weimies are preferred. "Standards that mention blue from the AKC Dog Book,17th edition (somewhat out of date)

English setter - blue belton
English cocker spaniel - blue roan
Weimaraner - "distinctly blue is disqualifying"
Dachshund - gray (blue) and white
Scottish deerhound - dark gray blue
Doberman - blue is allowed, however it is not "Isabella" which is fawn and also allowed Great Dane - blue
Bedlington terrier - blue
Border terrier - blue and tan
Kerry blue terrier - blue gray
Lakeland terrier - blue
Skye terrier - blue
Staffordshire bull terrier - blue
Silky terrier - blue & tan
Yorkshire terrier - blue & tan
Poodle - blue
Bearded collie - blue
Collie - blue merle
German shepherd dog/Alstasian - blue is allowed however a "serious fault"
Old English sheepdog - blue
Shetland sheepdog - blue merle Welsh corgi, cardigan - blue merle
Welsh corgi, Pembroke - bluie is a "very serious fault"

Neither briards or bouviers mention blue. Both can come in shades of gray. I question whether a "blue merle" or "blue belton" can be considered a blue dog."

Notice that blue tick hounds are not on the list as they are not recognized by the AKC. Siberian Huskies and Malmutes often have blue eyes as do several other breeds. Blue eyes sometimes indicate deafness, but not always.

Coonhounds are not on the list of registered breeds, but the American Kennel Club has set up rules for shows and trials.
Go to AKC index page: Index
Enter coonhound. Look under 2, Regulations for AKC Coonhound Bench Shows, etc., and click. Then click on Chapter 1. Go to Section 3. "The AKC recognizes the following breeds as eligible coonhounds.
Black and tan Coonhound
Blue tick Coonhound
American English Conhound
Plott
Redbone Coonhound
Treeing Walker Coonhound

Probably starting a trend, the AKC now registers black and tans. Many fanciers of hounds, border collies and other working and hunting dogs disdain the registration of their breeds. They say, with some justification, that the standards end up producing cookie cutter dogs without the necessary genetic variability, increasibg the liklihood of dyplasia, nervous temperaments, etc.

My late, great, Blue was a blue heeler. Her coat was the standard blue merle: no actual blue color, but black with a coarse white hair mingled in.....and then the solid black, with a wee bit of tan and white...

There was nothing else "standard" about that Dog. Perhaps the name refers to those who have lost them.....

Greg, I think you have all the info on Blue Ticks you need, but blue dogs are near and dear to my heart, so here are some pictures of dogs that do look distinctly "blue." Blue Weims are disqualified for show here as Sorcha said, but recognized in Europe. Longhair blues are almost unknown.....but I have two of them!!!! Again, the AKC doesn't recognize longhair Weimaraners, but the rest of the world does!

Anyway, enjoy some pix of my blue longhair Weimies! Click Here-also see the second page there as well

Thanks Sorch! We just got back from 10 days out camping and I have a story for you. Jaeger's main focus is to get back in the camper where it's air conditioned. Sis enjoys the more normal stuff. We were camping at a state park that has leash restrictions so they were on 20 foot leads at camp. I cheated some on that as they are well "street trained" and stick around me pretty close, come when called, etc. Anyway, Jaeger spent most of his time trying anything to get back into the camper and at one point even intentionally pulled rocks from the fire pit we had built so I'd put him inside.

We went to a remote part of the lake that no one ever goes to and after a picnic, I let them off the leads to run and romp. Sissy made a beeline for the lake and happily splashed around and waded much of the shoreline where we were. Jaeger on the other hand IMMEDIATELY went about a quarter of a mile up the hill in the other direction back to the van! We all just cracked up. I called him back and he finally came and laid down and waited til it was time to leave......What a woos!!!

Personally I think some of the Weimaraners I've seen would qualify as blue (shading thither from a steel gray). And while it's hard to judge from online photos, I think a few of the deerhounds (especially Havoc and his sister Holly Golightly; scroll down about 2/3 of the way) on this page are bluer than any Ozark coon dog I've seen.

Some dogs are called "Blue", of course, for the sake of the rhyme scheme.

The only dog I've ever known shared an apartment in Manhatten, and later a house on Martha's Vineyard, with Mark and Teresa Lovewell, he of the Vineyard Gazette. The only possible reason for naming him, a yellow dog, was for the sake of the song, as he would always perk up when he heard the howl after "Betcha 5 dollars he's a good dog, too."

I thought the "tick" part of a Blue Tick hound referred to the distinct markings on the skin, underneath the hair. The short, fat, lines look like "tick" marks, the sort of mark one would make if s/he were counting off something on a piece of paper.

a BLUE is Aussie slang for a fight or a row or sometimes a mistake, so maybe a feisty or quick-tempered boy (red-haired?) or dog is called 'blue'? Then there is 'blue blood' meaning aristocratic.

Welcome to the Mudcat, Kathy. I don't have an answer to your question, but here are some tips to increase the chance that you'll get one.

Start a separate thread--while I see the connection here with the song you mentioned, this thread is about the use of a word and will not necessarily attract those who think they can help with the name of a singer.

Make the new thread's title as specific as possible--for example, "Australian singer's name?" might catch the attention of those who are familiar with Aussie singers. In the past, some have used titles like "Help needed" which are so vague that many don't even bother to click on them.

Ditch the all caps--messages written in all capital letters are harder on the eye and thus a bit irritating. In internet ettiquette, using all caps is considered shouting or yelling.

There is wealth of knowledgeable people here, including many from Australia, so I'm hopeful you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck!

Greg, you asked on the 24/07/02, why is blue the colour of faithfulness?

Because, physically speaking, blue has a preserving or even receding quality! It is a retardant colour which prevents progression ( which is why it is traditionally not a good colour for fast food restaurants to be seen around! ) Taken now on a psychological level, we can notice around us that "Blue" people tend to be traditionalist; they do indeed tend to have an attachment to the past or having more of a backward-looking attitude than, say : a "Green" person... Blue is indeed the colour of conservatism (the Conservative party in Britain!)... and it's true that those people do tend to have a need to hold on; to the point sometimes of resisting change... It is the colour of peace at "any price"; a blue personality will tend to do anything for a quiet life, as they need peace so much in their lives!...to the point of bottling things up sometimes; avoiding quarrels or making scenes!...(They don't thrive on that sort of things, unlike, say : a "Red" person!

But more later on...

...A concrete example of this difficulty to let go which is so typical of the blue personality can be seen through, for instance, a person who tends to have difficulty to throw things away or clearing things out... (accumulating much clutter in the end!... Though technically, this is more of a "Violet" trait!) So, with all this in mind, a "Blue" person tends to be rather faithful relationshipwise... unlike, again, say : a "Red" or an "Orange" person (the complementary opposite) which is more of an overt womanizer (or "man eater"); while "Royal Blue" (Indigo) or "Violet" people will probably enjoy a secret affair at some point in their lives ( Both colours being a combination of the red vibration looking for some thrill and excitement in their love life...mixed with the introvert, secretiveness and aloofness of the blue energy!...)>

(All of the above: according to my colour psychology course, that is... and while we're at it, don't think that because your favorite colour is blue, you are ,then, obviously a "Blue" person!... It is more subtle than that! )

I've got a 'blue' hen. The breed is Kingsley Blue. She's a slatey grey colour, a maran hybrid.

By the way: are there different versions of Lobo's song "Me and you and a dog named".....boo or blue?
Both versions are offered by different sources.

On a side note, the color 'Isabella" is indeed a taupe-beige-fawn color named after Isabella of Spain, the same one who sponsored Columbus -- legend is that she vowed not to change her chemise (undergarment) until the Moors were thrown out of all Spain -- and it took something like 50 years. So you can imagine the color her linen got to be by that time...

Russian Blue cats (and Blue Abyssinians) are also variants of slate-grey, as are blue-roan horses or cattle.

Of course! Dogs are called Blue because it would be dumb as all hell to name them Wode! ;-)

But then again they were always hittin' that hot dusty woad!

So then some guy came along and called 'em Blue Highways in his book.

Go figure!

But now you know why dogs are...

I go with the blue tick. Obviously old blue is a hound and he trees possums.

Ol' Yeller, Ol' Blue, Ol' Red (also) it's easy to name an animal after the color you see
in their fur.

My dog is called Blue because when I call him Chartreuse or Lavender--ahem: both shades of the colour orange--he doesn't answer. Don't answer when I call him Orange, either.

My alsatian was a star of several porno movies only available on VHS and in video shops on Denmark.

particularly recommended by Bestiality Weakly was Blue Nights 6 on the Reeperbahn with Wulf. Also Walkies with Wulf and the barmaid.

I believe many of the his admirers called their dogs Blue due to confusions in translations of the script. They thought Wulf was Blue.

Did your dog star in the VHS, 'Alsatian Inflation' that received a great review from Kennel Monthly in which the writer said the movie was 'nothing to bitch about'?
