Subject: Looking for lyrics & author
From: nancy
Date: 10 May 98 - 02:04 AM

I'm looking for the lyrics and author for a song I believe is called "Child's Song." I used to have the music but I can't find it.

The song goes something like:

"Each of us must do the things that matter. Each of us must be what we can be. Though it was long ago you must remember. You were once as young and scared as me."

Thanks for your help.

Subject: Lyr Add: CHILD'S SONG (Murray McLauchlan)
From: Roger Himler

Well, I am surprised to be the first to reply.

It is Child's Song by Murray McLauchlan from his Epic recording Songs From the Street.

Goodbye Mama, goodbye to you, too, Paw,
Little sister, you'll have to wait a while to come along.
Goodbye to this house and all its memories.
We all just got too old to say we're wrong.
I've got to make one last trip to my bedroom.
I guess I'll have to leave some stuff behind.
It's funny how these same old crooked pictures,
Just don't look the same tonight.

There ain't no use in shedding no more tears, Maw.
And there ain't no use in shouting at me, Paw.
I can live no longer with your fears, Maw.
I love you, but that hasn't helped at all.
All of us has gotta do what matters.
And each of us must see what we can see.
Though it was long ago you must remember.
That you were once as young and scared as me.

Mama, I don't know how hard it is yet,
When you realize you're growin' old.
I know how hard it is now to be younger,
And I know you tried to keep me from the cold.
Thanks for all you've done, it may sound hollow.
Thank you for the good time that we've known.
' But I must have my own road to follow,
You will all be welcome in my home.

So I've got my suitcase, I must go, now.
I don't mind about the things you said.
Sorry, Maw, I don't know where I'm goin',
And remember little sister look ahead.
Tomorrow I'll be in some other sunrise,
And maybe I'll have someone by my side.
Mama give your love back to your husband.
Father, you have taught me well, goodbye.

Goodbye, Mama, goodbye to you, too, Paw.

The song was covered by Tom Rush on his self-titled LP on Columbia Records.

Good luck with this song, it is truly a child of the sixties.

Dear Roger,

After searching every database I could find, I finally did find it on Tom Rush's home page and realized that I have it on tape somewhere yet to be found. I didn't know who wrote it so I appreciate the information and the lyrics. I've never heard of Murray Mc Lauchan. Good recording?

Thanks, Nancy

Nancy,

Murray is a Canadian singer/songwriter. He was semi-big in the early 70's. Like many he went electric with a full band and he lost some of his charm to my way of thinking. He still actively performs in Canada. I saw him perform at the Folk Alliance in February of '97. He probably has nearly ten albums to his credit. Songs from the Street is one of my favorites from his early work.

Good luck with Child's Song.

Thanks for the info on Murray. I'll keep an eye out for his earlier music. Meantime, I've always wanted to go to Folk Alliance of one of the folk fests. Are you a singer-songwriter?

Nancy, a child from the 60's who's also from the "crab state" and wishes Mays Chapel was much closer. :-)

Dave Bromberg did a beautiful rendition of this song. It's on one of his albums from the early seventies.... can't remember the album title or cover, but perhaps I can dig it up.
