Except for the person who posted that thread, about complex metaphor, nobody seems to say hello to a guest, unless they stir something up, and I keep seeing remarks about it, like someone 'confessing' they had actually posted replies to a guest. Well, I've just been nosing around, and have to love the only place I could find the lyrics to Rap 'er to Bank. I'm burning through one of those free-month-of- service things I don't intend to keep, so I don't want to hook up much of anything, right now. So that I'm at least not an anonymous guest, I'm Fred Miller, live in Louisville, current (temporary) e-mail is Mtmesis@wmconnect.com. My dad, the poet and Appalachian scholar Jim Wayne Miller, was a much more accreditted and knowledgable old-school folkie than I--I'm just a guy who plays guitar, rather randomly. As for the internet, consider this: Jim Wayne Miller was born October 21, 1936, in Leicester, North Carolina, and died August 18, 1996. He was born to James Woodrow Miller (deceased) and Edith (Smith) Miller. In 1958, Miller married Mary Ellen Yates. Their three children are James Yates, Fred Smith, and Ruth Ratcliff. Throughout his life, Miller was a poet, novelist, essayist, teacher, editor, and translator of books from German (Contemporary 290).
With the recent passing of Miller, the Appalachian literary world has lost one of the most important figures in its history. In addition to writing many poems, novels, and essays, Miller worked with many writers, both young and established. And Miller not only translated works for such poets as Emil Lerperger, he also edited and introduced books by Appalachian writers Jesse Stuart, Cratis Williams, and James Still (Brosi 51-54). According to eminent Southern-Appalachian writer Fred Chappell, "if it were not for Miller, the Appal lit movement might have foundered before it got started" (Leidig 1). A proud heritage, indeed.

It works for me; I've never yet had the "lost cookie" problem that some other users complain of from time to time. |

We also have a Mudcatter there who was renovating an old theatre, downtown, and booking some great folk musicians for gigs there. Deda, that must be a fairly new thing, pronouncing Louisville (CO)that way. I've never heard my Colorado born and raised relatives ever pronounce it that way and my grandparents homesteaded near there. At least among our Colorado natives it has always been Loo-ah-vill or Loo-ee-vill. It's funny, now that my son has been in KY/IN so long, the way he says it sounds as if he's got marbles in his mouth so it comes out kind of like Loo-vuhl. *bg* kat |

Here we say Lou with conviction and uhvul as though we are sorry we brought it up. Why I wanted the lyrics to rap 'er to bank? heard it on the Wattersons Early Days and couldn't make out all the words. I don't especially follow that stuff, but love the Watterson's harmonies, vocal sound. Had a hard time finding their stuff until I asked someone at a local Irish fest, who had it buy the barrel. Hard to say anything coherent about my dad's stuff. "It's f***ing great!" I guess. As a poet he had a deceptively casual, conversational voice, and his stuff always seems better on re-reading than I remember it being. His essays too. He wrote less fiction, and in my own undisciplined, unschooled, maybe muddled and quasi-literate opinion, his fiction suffers from his commitment as an educator. He was unwilling to lose a reader who couldn't keep up, and some of the stuff sags with the burden of earnestness, I think. Would the renovated theatre in louisville be the Bunbury? Kat? Is Juergen on here? or a friend? There's also been some stuff going on at an old movie theatre on fourth--our local brilliant puppeteers did something there, and my friend Addie curated her first art show there, on a childbirth theme. Shouldn't try to explain my Hamlet remark. shouldn't drift. Especially not there. But I will anyway. I've always been fascinated by the way in Hamlet that one thing comes to replace another, from the changing of the guard in the first scene, to the change of the kingdom at the end, and I used to do a comparison of it to The Invasion of The Bodysnatchers. So when people debate whether something may have had historical roots in something else, I sometimes think that some are seeing the continuity and likeness, (the brother kings, the old bones are dug up to bury the new dead, etc.)while others are wanting to emphasise the particularity, and may even be offended by suggestion that a custom has old roots in something else. Hamlet sees no likeness in the brother kings, only a great falling off. So my point was that it's a matter of how one sees the evidence, as well as how much evidence there may be. Thanks everyone for the welcome and advice. I hope to find an inexpensive isp that isn't in any way shape or form connected to aol. aol messed up my previous computer totally, and when I got rid of it all the pages errors healed themselves. this free thing is an aol deal, and already doesn't want to close--I had to pull the jack out of the wall to log off. Seems pricey for a virus. |

I was pretty aromatic and when I traded my standing-room-only ticket for a newly returned 3rd-row-center seat, well, you might say I was a sensation sitting among the tuxes and evening gowns. (Woody would've loved it.) I swear Richard himself sniffed concernedly in my direction.------------Anyhow, a rehersal film of that Hamlet--Burton directed by Gielgud----survived Burton's widow trying to burn them all. He had also mentioned doing some kind of radio show out of the theatre ala PHC. Hope this helps! This poor old lad has taken bad. I'll be back here never. The song comes from the North East of England. In the old days the pitmen used to rap from the pit bottom to signal the cage to be wound up to the bank (surface)by means of a rapper rope hanging down the shaft and attached to the rapper at the top. As far as I know it is a traditional song originating in Co Durham - hence the distinctive Geordie dialect. Almost a foreign language to the likes of us Southerners! Dave R. |

But having posted once as a guest looking for the words of a song and been overwhelmed by all the help I got, I stuck around and am now a long-term, institutionalised inmate. The stuff about (anonymous) GUEST is a reminder that we're in an open society which includes some nasty people, but most of the toxic postings from that particular source suggest that the poster is less of a guest than you or I, and just has to keep grinding that old axe. Not too sure how to take that reference to "folkology and BS" above, though: I thought that f**kology and BS were the same thing, and the music was the other incidental factor that holds this forum together. Once you're perceived as a genuinely interested person, you'll also get help not only on the music but also on tech stuff like cookies and the arcane art of the blue clicky (ask nicely and Noreen will take you by the hand...). So here goes. I have "become a member" and logged on (installed cookies) on both my work and home PCs, and have no problem accessing Mudcat from either without logging out. I've also been reassured that having a cookie does not materially increase the risk of virus infection, so I don't have any problem with my employer's policy on personal use of my office PC (apart from the office hours that I spend here when things are quiet on the work front, that is). Oh, and, if you can't find the "é" key on your keyboard, you can call me apc. |

But there are a few around here who could explain what every word of that song means. And another few who would disagree with them and give an alternative explanation. That's how the Mudcat works.
AOL is a right bugger. I had a trial of them when, for some reason, my normal set up wouldn't work - and getting it out of the PC's system was murder. I was pleased to see on the news that they are being investigated for some kind of funny business - fiddling the figures or something like that (allegedly). But I'm sure one way and another there'll be suggestions of better service providers who are free or inexpensive. In England there is no shortage of them, and I can't imagine America doesn't have them too. Welcome. |

Also--I don't know why my paragraphs don't indent the way I type them. Art, no I haven't seen the Burton Hamlet, but I've seen every film version I come upon, so I may get hold of it. There was a lot to like in Branagh's version, though the ghost seemed sort of stagey. Michaelr, I'll probably get netzero, several people are recommending it, I just thought I'd use the free thing while I look around. I may have to change again to do a website, I don't know, should probably buy a domain name so I don't have to switch around. Unfortunately, I'm not learning much about this stuff. I maintain friendships with several 20ish guys for tech support, and for the odd entertainment of their lurid, vulgar stories, but the downside is the habit of not having to sort stuff out myself, because they seem happy to walk me through it. Kat--yes, that's the old theatre on 4rth. John Gage is a well known folkster around here. There's also a Jim Gage, from Berea--we have lots of good Gages. A great duo called Zoey Speaks does a song called Small Things by Jim Gage, which I heard him sing at our thanksgivings when I was a kid. The stuff I play is probably best left to come up on occasion--I played a bit of lute and classical in college, but except for a pretty piece or two that stuff is too dry for me anymore. I play some old unfashionable art-pop-rock things, and things lots of people play--I learned a few tunes from the recent Dylan CD, and I'd never done the Beatles Two of Us until someone gave me the I Am Sam covers. (I became alienated on a guitar site because nobody liked or had ever heard of Lucinda Williams.) My kids like songs that mention things they like, so I do songs that have kid-remarks in them. In short I'm just ecclectic enough that, without much substance or talent, I can give the impression of being more interesting than I am. I'm not, I'm just scattered. I'm not much of a scholar, I just have a niche or two I get into. I feel a bit embarrassed at having called so much attention to myself, just wanted to say hello, but I really appreciate the repies, the lyrics, the advice. Thanks everyone, Fred |

In Portland, OR, it's free and you get up to 60 minutes per day (if you can get through the line of teeny boppers sitting there emailing their friends sitting at the next computer). All you need is a library card. PPS, Fred, I always have some trouble getting AOL to quit--sometimes it takes ages. I pay them for 3 hours a month, so I don't like to waste my minutes while their service disconnects.
