Hi folkies, I'm looking for the lyrics of "Jenny Gray's Whiskey", performed by scottish band Silly Wizard and probably arranged by andy m. stewart. it's included in an andy m. stewart songbook, but no need for buying that cause i found all the other songs in the www. - except for that "jenny gray's whiskey". I'd appreciate if somebody could post me the words. thanks.

Subject: Lyr Add: JENNY GRAY'S WHISKEY

JENNY GRAY'S WHISKEY

For Jenny she makes a royal brew and the best of old Scots whiskey too
There's no corn will cure this heart so pure as a horn of Jenny Gray's whiskey-o

As I walked out one cold, grey morn, the day being dry and dusty-o
Some pals and I went into and inn for a horn of Jenny Gray's whiskey-o

Come all you misers great and small, your gold is growing dusty-o
Don't sit and think but come and drink of a horn of Jenny Gray's whiskey-o

Now there's some that like to quarrel and to fight whenever they get frisky-o
But give me a lass and a flowing glass and a horn of Jenny Gray's whiskey-o
Hey nonny no

Mary

I'd heard it as:

For JEAN she KEEPS a royal brew and the best of ALL Scots WHISKY too
NAE CORDIAL CURE IS HALF SAE pure as a horn of Jenny Gray's WHISKY-o

It would have to be WHISKY not whiskey if it's Scots; whiskey is Irish.

Ian

I used to sing this in the early Eighties.... and the lyrics I used are as follows:-

1, One Sunday morn as I rode out,
Wi the road being dark and dusty O,
A friend and I stepped into an inn
For a horn o' Jenny Gray's whiskey O.

CHORUS: And her gin she keeps, that royal brew,
And the best of all Scots whiskey too.
No cordial cure is half so pure
As a horn o' Jenny Gray's whiskey O.

2. Now there's some that likes tae quarrel and fight,
Whenever they get tipsy O,
Ah, but gie me a lass and a full flowing glass.
Of a horn o' Jenny Gray's whiskey O.

CHORUS

3. So come all you misers great and small,
For your gold has gotten dusty O.
Don't sit and think, but come and drink
Of a horn o' Jenny Gray's whiskey O.

CHORUS X 2

And when I found that version..... not sure where I got it from but I know it's a very old song.... it explained that the Whisky was called 'Scots' Whisky in the days the song was written (I think soon after The Battle of Culloden) and not 'Scotch' as it is now.
Best wishes, Mike.

"There are many advertisements from the 1900s for both "Scotch whiskey" and "Irish whisky", and the Royal Commision on Whiskey 1908-09 includes the 'e' throughout its definition."
"Maker's Mark, a Bourbon from Kentucky, and George Dickel, a Tennessee whisky, both drop the 'e'; Paddy from Cork only adopted the 'e' in 1966. The spelling is by convention, not by law"

From Charles MacLean's Miscellany of Whisky 2004

a fine song that i fell in love with many moons ago... learned by heating it sung by Andy... and folk processed by a combination of poor hearing & memory lol

but still pretty close to Georgiansilver and the same timeframe... glad I stumbled into this thread
