I was gonna use it, LEJ -- I mean, I just love it, personally, but..well, the lyrics are hard to understand, with the lead singer playing noseflute and all. And once I got them figured out, I thought they were a little bit, how do you say, over the top? So I'm using your equally incredible version of "Barney's Song" instead if you don't mind....

Is that the Barney's song as arranged for flatulence and zither? or the version with glockenspiel and kazoo?

Sure thing! I can get it over ok -- I am just working out how to do it with the minimum of hiss. It's easier to run the analog signal through an equalizer I borrowed fromt he family stereo, rather than running the digital file through filters on the computer. In any event they'll sound beter than Cisco Houston.

Not to to worry!!

Why not have 2 (or 3?) different sets of 3ish cd's each? I know I'll definitely kick out for all, but if some would rather not spend as much at one time, a choice of one or another of many would make that possible.

Amos? I think I would have to ask that my band get credit on the cover. If it's my handle alone, it doesn't really give credit where credit is due. I am only one of 6, after all.

I cannot *wait* to hear this thing (these things???). That is one impressive list of artists *and* songs.

So, Amos m'friend! What's the ETA????

CS:

Roger that -- Band it shall be.

ETA? Sigh...it depends on several things. I am waiting to hear from Max, but he was supposed to be discussing lofgistics with Dick, and Dick is on travel at present. On the technical side I am going through the tapes now, getting the selections on to Minisdisk and thence to computer, but it's a bit of a slow process, and I am juggling a significant number of 3D deadlines and honeydews on top.

I would say a couple of months. I will sit down and do a scheduel review and see if I can move that forward some. In our original plan we were aiming for release in early September. That's out of range now. Partly because I had to shift a lot of that time over to work overtime.

So now we are probably looking at Thanksgiving for all the loose ends to be rounded up, logistics, normalizing the files, final build for at least Disk One or Set One, and working out the distirbution channel. I hope this isn't too disappointing to anyone, but I am trying to be realistic in a universde dedicated to Foobaring in multiple dimensions simultaneously.

Very best,

A

Folks, I owe Willie-O an apology -- I have several of his beautiful MP3s downloaded for the CDs, and missed it when compiling the table. His "Spring on the Mississippi" will surely be there, although I am torn by "Anna Grace" as well. Both first-class stuff!

I was a bit surprised to see "Firelight" as a preferred track. I've no complaints, I love doing it, but I have always thought that it was an average song redeemed by Markus's brilliant arrangement. It's just that it's the only personal song on the album - and very much the sort of thing which frequently gets a hammering from Mudcatters who (often for very good reasons) distrust singer/songwriters. You have heard a lot of other artists though, so you have a clearer picture of what sort of texture the album will eventually have. Only a few songs can make it to final selection anyway - and it's a privelege to take part. From what I have heard of other 'Catters so far, I want a copy anyway!

OPINIONS SOLICITED

One option which is available is to put the entire collection on a disk in MP3 format. This means they could only be played on a device such as a computer which could handle playing MP3s, but that an ordinary audio CD player would not be able to play the songs. The tradeoff is you woud get the whole collection on a single disk. two at most.

Alternative is to create audio CDs which any CD player can play (including most computer CD-play applications). These are limited to about 20 songs or 70 minutes to a disk. We have somewhere between 60 and 90 tracks to offer, so you can see from the math that quite a few disks are involved.

If we continue with the plan for audio CDs, there is no reason we cannot offer the MP3 Disk as an alternative.

In that case I would design the first 2 audio CDs as a set, choosing the best representative cross section and get it into distribution, followed by the second 2-CD Set later on. If we go over 80, a third round might be needed.

Your opinion is invited as to which you, personally, would find the most appealing for your own enjoyment: a large number of MP3 files on one disk. or an audio CD set.

Speak now while the options are open!!

Very best regards,

Amos

I opt for the audio set. Have no way to play MP3's. I hope you'll choose "When the Rain Comes A-Tumbling Down" for my selection. Will there be accompanying notes on the songs. This song definitely needs an explanation and a little more than what I sent you with teh tape. Thanks for all you are doing. I can't wait.

Hi Amos

First - a big thank you for all your effort, and just want to let you know that we're all squealing with excitement at this end to be included.

Second - regarding format: most folkies I know tend to favour cds to downloading from the net. I know this throws up issues of "too many songs" (never thought I'd use those words!). Is there any reason both couldn't be made available?

thanks again

Callie

I would like to see an audio CD. As I suggested in my PM a few days ago, there may well be other 'Catters who are willing to send money up front to order copies. That is one possible way of paying for the first pressing - which would be higher quality. The other thing is that if some sort of cultural exchange does come off, (something that has been mooted on other threads) the CD will be a good way of presenting ourselves to potential backers.

The data set (mp3's) is relatively easy to do - so go with the audio set and when possible offer the MP3 CD as an alternative.

My preference would be to have one audio CD set which would be representative of the Mudcat, and also have all the mp3's available on the Mudcat on-line. That way, people can download the mp3's on their own and convert them to audio if they wish to burn their own CDs, or can just listen to a track if they see a post from someone they'd like to hear.

Audio CD's will have one big advantage that MP3's may not. An audio CD will make it easier to get all of that wonderful music into the hands of the general public.

As regards MP3s, making one disk of all MP3s available would also add to the Mudcat coffers, which is why we're doing all dis, ya??

Well, one of the reasons for doing this is to get to hear each other. The audio CDs could be sold to mudcats as well as the general public, thus helping the mudcat financially. MP3s would not be as commercially interesting, so they could be made available online to members only! (Yahoo groups have options available only to members, such as photos, databases, etc.)

I don't really care about the format but I thought part of the point was for Mudcat to make some $$$. If you do MP3 that won't happen. I personally can't afford to buy more than 2 at a time but I would eventually buy them all. MP would be nice because I would listen at my computer, but the speakers are not loud enough to hear anywhere more than 4 feet from the computer and I can't as yet burn CD's. Burning your own seems like ripping off Max anyway. He has provided this forum and opportunity; seems only fair he should get something back.

I vote for CD's too, Amos. As for storing mp3's on Mudcat, I believe Max would need a couple more servers to hold them all. These things take up enormous amounts of space. Can't see 'em but they sure do suck it up quick.

What I was proposing was to offer an alternative shippable CD containing MP3s for those who want them. Not downloadable freebies, which as has been said kinda defeats the fundraising aspect of the effort.

Okay!! You shall have your wish for audio CDs!!

But no wand-waving will be used. Just a little more time and sweat. OK?

LOL!!

OK!! Close to 100 posts, so let's put all the rest of the dialogue over on Section VIII: Azure Morning Tunes.

See ya there!

I'm afraid you've lost me in the techno-jargon, since I am a (relative) cyber-newbie. I can play MP3s via several porgrams, especially RealPlayer, but I'd really like to have CD's to play when I don't wanna bother lugging my laptop around.

I can scrape together some SS to buy 2 or 3 Mudcat CDs, especially if it'll help Max keep the kat in catnip.
