I have been thinking about buying a Taylor for a while now, haven't got as far model selection just yet, just know I want a nice big dreadnaught for finger picking in folk clubs where my cutaway just doesn't have the volume.

Incidentally, my present guitar for going to clubs is a Fylde. In my opinion, they are the best acoustic guitars on the market if you are buying new. Mind you, I haven't tried every guitar on the market! The couple of Taylors I have played with in the shop seem easier and more satisfying than an equivalent priced Martin or Guild, and seem in a different league to Takameni, Ovation or many other mainstream instruments.

I can't really justify the cost of another Fylde, so within my budget, (GB£2,000 max) any thoughts on a loud Taylor would be appreciated.

Good luck with that Maton, I know Tommy Emmanuel uses one (or maybe more than one ) as his main guitar, which is, or should be, recommendation enough, but I have to say, I have only ever come in contact with one Maton, and I was distinctly underwhelmed.

Maybe it sounds great plugged in, but unamplified, it sucks, quite frankly. Also needed a good set-up, imo.

i just purchased a 410ce today here in hong kong where im living and performing 5 nights a week. i usually play a Maton (australian made guitar) EBG808 and EBG808CE. both are mid size 000 type guitars. my BG808 is absolutely killer, and ive never had any guitar come close to it tone wise, playability and endurance wise. its a absolutely incredible guitar. ive smashed it over a guys head, broke the headstock, dropped it countless times as ive been drink on stage, ive even danced on it as it lay on the stage, and yet it still lives and plays like a dream. i now call it the Terminator, cos i just cant kill it (not that i want to).

back to the point though, sorry. i loved the acoustic tone of the 410ce, it is very impressive. huge tone (compared to what im used to anyways). plugged into an AER amp in the store and it sounded a little boxy, lacked midrange, but i figured it may just be the amplifier. however, got to the gig and set it up, and lo and behold, same thing. it just didnt have much grunt or tonal variety plugged in. i played it for 2 songs and then picked up the Terminator again and finished my show with it.

what im pondering is, and people who own Taylors may be able to elaborate here, is this normal plugged in tone, or does it sound like i could have a faulty one?? i would love for it to sound plugged in as it does acoustically, because its a lovely guitar to play. the action is incredible and overall tone is great. just need to have that plugged in sound happening though.

I have to say though I disagree with stringkiller about the best acoustic ever. It is great but I keep it as my secondary onstage acoustic or backup. I play a Del Langejans as my primary guitar. It is the greatest acoustic I have ever heard or played in my life. You all can chew me apart if you want but IN MY OPINION Del Langejans makes the best guitars going. I have played all kinds of Larivee's (old and new), Taylors (old and new), Leech, you name it and Langejans is the top dog in my book. I have put a padlock on that book melted the key and stored the book in a safety deposit box and thrown away all of my ink pens as well lol. I am not changing my mind.

I have a 410 CE and really like it. I have had it for a while and although it is not my primary guitar it is a great guitar. I have had no problems with it at all. Electonics are good and the eq is great. I would not hesitate giving a recomendation to anyone.

I've owned four taylors and still have three. I had highlander stand alone mics installed, rather than getting the on board electronics (the early version made good guitars sound like an ovation through the sound system). I've had the K14c since 1998, the 30th anniversary model since 2005, and a GS since 2006. The 14 and the GS both have cedar tops and I like the scale length on the anniversary model.

I have heard good larivees over the years, but haven't played one personally that caused guitar lust. On one occasion I won about $2800 in the Illinois lottery (matched 5 out of 6 numbers) and figured I splurge on a new guitar. I went to my favorite music store and tried every larivee there. I have heard some played by others that sound great. Just a matter of what works when you're playing them. I'm hesitant to say one brand of guitar is better than another.

I have had a Taylor for about the past three years. The tone is very reminiscent of an old 1950's Brazilian Rosewood D-28 I once owned and loved; great projection and depth, but bright at the same time. It sparkles. The neck is easy and true (easier to play than the Martin) and the best part was the price - I bid on it at a charity auction and got very lucky. If the Larrivee is better than this, I have to try it.

I've played Taylors, Martins(have two), Takamine, Yamaha, Guilds, Gibsons, Washburn, Penetils, and others. Played the Larrivee presentation model,..
..NO COMPARISON!! Now, instead of trying to prove a point...just try one out...that's all...just try it. They can be found at any higher end guitars dealer's store, or the NAMM shows...its not worth debating..let is speak for itself.

Venthony, I totally agree..Larrivee, especially the ''Larrivee Presentation Model', is without equal anywhere!..as far as I know, it is the finest made anywhere, and the best I've ever played...bar none...by a long shot!!..I tried to trade two of my vintage Martins for
one! The guy had three!!..At first he wanted to do it, because one of the Martins he always wanted..but later decided against it. Actually, if it were me, and I had the Larrivees, I would have never never even considered it, or given it a second thought! If anone who is out there, is a serious player, by all means just pick up and play one for under a minute...and YOU'LL KNOW!!!(in about the first 5-10 seconds)

Here's a site with pictures of a Taylor EC 316 Electro acoustic guitar. Use Elixir strings, they make good acoustic guitars sound even better for a good time (sounds better than a long time - like 3 months of 2/3 gigs a week?).

IMHO - Get the regular 410 instead of the 410CE unless you have a damned good reason to need a cutaway. If you need or want to sell the guitar in a few years, I think you'll find that cutaway dreadnoughts are harder to sell than their non-cutaway brothers. The CE costs more new, but may well bring less on the used instrument market.

Tony, that is a somewhat sweeping statement about the quality of wood available. The quality of soundboard wood hasn't deteriorated, for sure.

Are you saying that the East Indian rosewood available now is in some way inferior to that available when Taylor started making guitars?

I don't recollect that Taylor ever made too many Brazilian rosewood instruments, but if they did, then obviously they aren't going to be able to do that again in the foreseeable future.

Asd far as their mahogany instruments are concerned, the quality of Honduras mahogany hasn't changed in the last two hundred years.

Taylor makes nice stuff these days. But not as nice as the first ones when they had better wood to work with. Now that Mossman is now more, for my money, Jean Larrivee is the new king of what has become everyone's attempt to produce an affordable (!) pre-war-style Martin.

These are really GREAT guitars. I guess he just needs better marketing.

Well, Spike.... I don't know - maybe you're in luck, but so far I don't think so! I took the plunge and am sure not regretting it so far. What a nice machine.

Murray - no this one is a spruce top, but a very unusual spruce, almost a burled sort of pattern to the wood rather than the straight grain in my Marin and most... it's beautiful and sounds like heaven!

I tried that model in the Guitar Center in Framingham MA and I fell in love with it too. SO responsive. Cedar top, right?

Unfortunately at the time my credit in the States was too new and I couldn't afford to buy it outright. Bought a Martin DM instead and have never been really happy with it.

Buy it, you'll never regret it.
