Subject: RE: Help: band and caller From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 29 Jul 02 - 05:53 PM The definitive site for english bands and ceilidh listings is Webfeet You can also make sure that you aren't clashing with anything. You should be clearer about your requirements. The band and caller that will work for a wedding party is totally different to one for a public gig targeted at the existing ceilidh circuit. A good agent should sort this out for you but agents are as mixed a bunch as the bands they represent. You want to keep in mind your audience (folk/non folk) the type of event (party, public gig) and the musical style expected (American barn dance, Irish, Scottish, English ceilidh), do you want a band to play straight or rocked up arrangements? |
Subject: RE: Help: band and caller From: greg stephens Date: 29 Jul 02 - 06:39 PM The Boat Band are totally excellent in every way for ceildhs, and Coventry would be perefectly handy. They generally work with the celebrated Wendy Meadley as caller. They can be contacted at boatband(at)cwctv(dot)com (apparently writng addresses this way avoids attracting spam). Or via Personal Message to greg stephens. Oh,that's me, that's a coincidence. |
Subject: RE: Help: band and caller From: CharlieA Date: 30 Jul 02 - 04:58 AM Ok, I'll elaborate a little more. I am a member of a national LARPS group (thats Live Action Role Play) We kinda run around fighting people with Laytex swords and other such weapons. The men mostly wear kilts and the women wear whatever they want as long as it looks apropriate to the caledonian dark ages kinda theme. I hope this puts noone off!!! If peeps couls PM me with quotes for an eve (oh and the beer would probably be free and you're welcome to join in with the rest of the evenings drinking) Ta very Much Charlie |

Subject: RE: Help: band and caller From: John J Date: 30 Jul 02 - 02:37 PM One of the best bands in the area is 'Peeping Tom', they're a top notch band, a thoroughly decent bunch of blokes ('Sad old gits' is how they describe themseves), and they are absolutely guaranteed to get you bopping! I don't think they have a 'resident' caller, but I'm sure they could come up with one. John |
Subject: RE: Help: band and caller From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 30 Jul 02 - 04:10 PM Charlie, I spotted the typo and posted a correction or so I thought. Click here This will work as I went to the site and copied the address rather than trusting to my aging memory. I thought of Peeping Tom too but they already play a monthly public gig in Coventry. If its purely for you society and you don't want to be authentic with the Celtic theme then they will be superb but as a top band with a national reputation don't expect them to play for the beer. If you want to pull in a decent number of paying punters as a fund raiser then go for a popular band from a little further away - Woodpecker Band from Oxford would be good - more folk/rock but with a stronger melody line up than PT.
