I've been searching the net with search engines and abc tunefinders trying to find a gif of the notation for Planxty Joe Burke. No success. Does anyone have it? I already have a recording (the one by Anam).

Alice

No Carolan tunes with "Joe" in them. Sir Ulrick, Sir Festus, Lady Laetitia, Thomas, Isabella, and just Planxty Burke.

Could it be this one?

thanks for looking, Sorcha, that's not it. I did look at all the Carolan Planxty tunes I could find with the Burke name before I posted this question. This seems to be perhaps an arrangement of something Anam came up with.

Joe Burke is a well known box (accordeon) player from Galway and although he's not as young as he once was, he definitely wasn't around in O'Carolans time.

I'm not familiar with the tune recorded by Anam, but I suspect that its a modern composition and its name is a sort of pun on the fact that there is a Planxty Burke and a box player of the same name, or else its a harp tune that they decided to call after Joe because they didn't have the correct name - which happens all the time with traditional tunes.

Yes, I know Joe Burke is a box player, alive and well. The notes on the recording say the tune is traditional. The info is confusing.

It was written by Charlie Lennon, I think.

You're right, Malcolm (as always). It appears on Liz Doherty's Last Orders, where she says:

The Swan (Hornpipes)
Planxty Joe Burke -The Swan (Chatlie Lennon -MCPS/lMRO; Trad;)
The first of these (which I thought was a hornpipe but was actually written as a planxty) is a tune of Charlie Lennon's.

A short clip of Anam playing it in Real Audio is here Click on 6 for Planxty Joe Burke

I know that's not what you want, Alice, but we may be getting closer?

If Anam do say it's traditional they're very careless... I'd say it must be a very recent composition.

Thanks for the correct source being Charlie Lennon. Is this definitive? Does anyone else have additional facts?

Aren't there people here who can make dots from soundfiles? Could you make a recording and see if someone can transcribe it?

Here's a review of ANAM - First Footing JVC 9011-2 which credits Charlie, and

a very detailed playlist Radio National/The Planet Playlists which gives:

1648 CD CUT 6, "PLANXTY JOE BURKE"
COMP CHARLIE LENNON, ARR BRIAN OHEADHRA, AIMEE LEONARD, TREASA HARKIN, MYLES FARRELL
PUB NOT SPEC
SAME DISC & ALL OTHER DETAILS AS PRECEDING CUT
3' 12"
(Irish: very lyrical, yet not gooey: accordion to fore w fiddle, bouzouki & ac guitars)

I would have thought this tecnical info was copied from the CD?

What additional facts are you looking for, Alice?

Liz Doherty reference mentioned above: Liz Doherty's Last Orders

I've downloaded the tune from the playing of a young Danish group flax in bloom , and could transcribe it to dots if you can't find it elsewhere, Alice.

Thanks, Noreen, I just had a cassette of Anam without the cover and had found "traditional" on some web site selling the CD, so thought that was from the CD notes. Additional facts... has it been recorded by Charlie Lennon and Joe Burke? I just searched discography on the internet and could not find a recording by them, which I think would be great to have if it exists. Noreen, I'd be very grateful if you could transcribe it for me. Thanks very much.

Alice

Between the two versions the biggest difference appears to be that somehow one or the other changed an octave. (I don't know the conversions well enough to be able to tell which went which way)

I am sooooooo impressed with people who can write down notes by listening! I can sort of play by ear, but can't transcribe at all. Good on ya, Noreen!

You're welcome :0)

I enjoyed working it out- it's a lovely tune of Charlie's, and I'd be tempted to learn it on the concertina if the range wasn't so great- don't think I've got enough buttons!

Alice, you can download a free trial version (that's all I've got) of Noteworthy Composer from the net; I could then e-mail you the NWC file and you'll have the dots directly. (Far more accurate transfer than via ABC, I'd imagine.)

I should say also, that the notated rhythm is only an approximation of the hornpipe rhythm (which is almost impossible to notate accurately); but close enough, particularly if you've already heard it played.

I have Melody Assistant that I purchased for my older Mac, which is having some system conflicts right now, so I've been using my iMac backup which doesn't have notation software. Some day I'll move a copy of the Melody software to the iMac, too. Great tune, and Charlie deserves some PayPal money emailed to him for use of it. Thanks for the dots, Sorcha.
