This song was sung by Rovert Lund back in the late 30's and early 40's on the Grand Ol' Opry. It was not origional with him. I'm sure it goes on back a good way. I would guess it has some connection to music halls and the music that came from them.

Here's how Danny Kaye sang it on "Tubby the Tuba and Other Favorites":

There's a hole...a log...a branch...a bump...a frog...a tail...a fly...a speck...a fleck.

On the last verse (fleck), he sings the first line and then the chorus (which has been singing the second line each time) says, "There's a WHAT?" and he replies, "Like I said--in the bottom of the sea."

Then after the last verse he sings, "So let's...
flick the fleck
brush the speck
swat the fly
twist the tail
chase the frog
flatten the bump
break the branch
burn the log
fill the hole,
Hole in the bottom of the sea

I always did the song and where you hear "something" I used "mite".Like so---There's a log-------There's a knot-----There's a frog----There's a wart-----There's a hair----There's a flea-----There's a chigger---There's a mite----There's a germ---There's no hole---No more hole---I done filled up the hole in the bottom of the sea.

Glad you've got the words... it was on tonight's news that there is a 12 mile wide hole in the bottom of the sea off the coast of England... and the nearest city... you've guessed it the Mudcat centre of the Universe... Hull!!! a. asteroid apparently hit the spot & made the earth move 65,000,000 years ago...

so there's the answer to your question... where's the hole in the sea?... near Hull.

Actually, I haven't found a version out there close to what Lonzo and Oscar sings:

There's a hole in the bottom of the sea There's a hole in the bottom of the sea There's a hole, there'a a hole, There's a hole in the bottom of the sea

There's a log in the hole in the bottom of the sea

Then it goes into a KNOT (not a bump). A frog on the knot. Wart on the frog. Hair in the wart. Flea on the hair. A chigger on the flea. A germ on the chigger. A something on the germ (they fade out and come back when saying this "something" and I can't make it out).

Believe me, I have done research on Lonzo and Oscar, both on and off the internet. For example, on the Song Tree USA site, that is not THE Lonzo and Oscar. In another post I posted last night, someone replied to it today and found my Lonzo and Oscar page on my website: http://wcgs.ala.nu/lonzoandoscar.htm

It contains a complete discography on the original Lonzo and Oscar (with their Winston County Pea Pickers), dates the songs were recorded, musicians, etc. I would call these the Victor ledger sheets, as the material came from the RCA Victor (now BMG) Vaults in New York.

I just did some DT and forum searching, and it doesn't appear the full lyrics are in either place. Joe Offer put in the 1st, 2nd, and last verse-lines of a version in July of 1999, but my use of search with key phrases of verse-lines he omitted comes up with nothing. Accordingly:

THERE'S A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA

There's a hole in the bottom of the sea (x 2)
There's a hole There's a hole
There's a hole in the bottom of the sea.

....(OR, for merely sing the verse-line four times, including for the third line)

There's a log in the hole in the bottom of the sea

There's a bump on the log in the hole in the bottom of the sea

There's a frog on the bump on the log in the hole in the bottom of the sea

There's a wart on the frog on the log....

There's a hair on the wart on...

There's a flea on the hair...

There's a eye on the flea...

There's an eyelash on the eye...

There's a germ on the eyelash...

This is WILDLY popular with kid audiences, having them sing along!

I don't know the timing of the Lonzo and Oscar version, but I learned this song back in the 40s, and it sure wasn't new then.

This sounds like the cumulative song which starts:

"There's a hole in the bottom of the sea (3x)
There's a tree in the hole in the bottom of the sea (3x)
There's a branch on the tree in the hole in the bottom of the sea..."
etc.

Good luck with doing it all the way through without stumbling.

Google search returns several versions. I don't know which is the one, or none at all. Hack and Sack's recording of 'There's A Hole In The Bottom Of The Sea' is at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites (Click on "Real Country Archives Page 12").

I'm looking for the specific lyrics to Lonzo and Oscar's song "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." On the original 78, it lists Lonzo and Oscar in the credits (other songs lists their real names). Did they originally write this song?
