Hello all, I am looking for the words of an old song, I am not sure of the song's history. All I know is this much of the lyrics: "I like to go swimming with bow legged women" Anyone ever hear of it? Thanks

A child's verse from "Popeye The Sailor Man" ?

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I live in a garbage can
I likes to go swimming
With bow-legged women
I'm Popeye the sailor man

;-)

"Here's to swimmin' with bow legged women!"

Toast by the character Quint in Spielberg's movie Jaws.

I don't recall if it is also in Benchely's original novel, although Benchley did help write the screenplay.

The best I can do here is to start it, recalling a spirited performance of this number by Harry Morgan as Col. Potter on MASH: "I love to go swimming with bow-legged women and swim between their legs...swim between their legs...swim between their legs" Sadly the rest is all a blur.

Bull Moose Jackson had a hit with a title called "I want a bow-legged woman" (co-writer Lucky Millinder) covered - among others - on 'The Crumb Musical' (also credited to Glover/Nix - is that the same song?)

The lines I remember from when I was a kid are:

I love to go swimmin'
With bow-legged wimmin
And dive between their legs!

I don't know whether there was any more to it.

Not relevant to the question asked, but Bobby Rush (Otis' less famous brother) had a beaut fun blues called 'Bowlegged Woman and Knock Kneed Man'. It's on an old Charly LP, 'Rough Dried Blues', which really should be reissued on CD - it had other classics such as Big Mac's 'Rough Dried Woman' and Cash McCall's 'Stoop Down'.

Keep on trucking, mama,
Trucking in a natural way!
Keep on trucking, mama,
Trucking till the beak of day!
There's just one thing that I understand,
A bow-legged woman loves a knock-kneed man,
So keep on trucking, mama,
Trucking all your blues away!

Vivian Greene recorded a "Bowlegged Boogie", nice swinging piano-rolling "double entendre" blues, from circa 1950, with lines like:

Jack & Jill went up the hill
Jill cut out
cause she had to meet Bill
do the bowlegged boogie

It takes a bowlegged woman
and a ..?.. meat man
to do the boogie woogie
in a sardine-can

Mama's in a gamblin' house
trying her best to win
Sister's ..?.. house
saying Richard let me in

I heard it as "I love to go swimming with bare naked women and dive between their knees."

I don't know the rest. My grandma said it is a bawdy drinking song. I can't remember the rest.

There was a "Drew Carey" show that included the "I want to go swimmin' with bow-legged women and swim between their legs", but it stopped after a couple rounds of "and swim between their legs". Must be more somewhere.

That might be it--- I wonder if it's a cadence call of
some kind.

Potter's shower performance in M*A*S*H was interrupted by
Fr. Mulcahy walking in. Potter immediately hushed his tune
and said 'Oh, sorry Padre.'

It was a country western song from 50's or 60's. I heard the whole thing played on a radio (am talk) show in 2003 or 2004. I was working in Northern Minnesota. It could have been the Joe Soucheray "Garage Logic" show or a show right before it. (3 old timer's talking sports)

I've been trying to track down the lyrics for 6 months.

Joe Soucheray's "Garage Logic" show is on radio station KSTP in Minneapolis/St Paul. He's also a columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. You might try contacting him through either web site.

If you find out anything, let us know.

That love finds a way
But for Sam and Samantha, it doesn't.

In "In the heat of the night" there's a song about Bow-legged Sally and Knock-Kneed Paul, can't get together at all (I'd have thought it would be easy - it's if SHE's knock-kneed and HE's bowlegged that the trouble starts, so I never understood he problem)...

There is a recording of this of Colonel Potter from M*A*S*H singing this in the shower. Listen here.

According to this website, the phrase "Bowlegged women" was a euphemism for "Bare naked women". See here:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/29/messages/456.html

So the ditty, which endlessly reprints, goes "I love to go swimming with bare-naked women and swim between their legs!"

Regarding the posting by Earl, above: Many moons ago, I visited the "Casey Jones Museum." I'm not sure where it was, perhaps Kentucky? On the wall was newspaper clipping with all the words to Earl's version. The article mentioned that Casey Jones' wife had sued someone over these words as she claimed it was "obscene."

It would be interesting if anyone else can remember any of that story. Bob(deckman)Nelson

This is what my dad sang, we grew up with the first part and when we got older would hear snippets of the second part. TOO FUNNY!

I love to go swimming with bow legged women and dive between their legs

If you know a ladies who want any babies, just send them around to me.

This was all I ever learned, I believe it may have been a marching cadence. Daddy was in the AirForce and was a POW in Germany during WWII.

My grandfather James Patrick McGraw sang us that song always, sang it once in the car, on the way from WA stated to SD for summer trip to farm...****for about 100 miles, looping the song - (Only two verses...and the OHHHHHHH, IIIII...would get longer each time until Grandma said G** Damn* it Jim...you must shut up...(he also played the accordion or mouth harp with it) and he replied...Mother...I am just trying to entertain the children...LOL...She wanted to hurt him...LOL

I LOVE TO GO SWIMMIN' WITH BOW LEGGED WOMEN

1. The words are: Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, IIIIIIIIII...Love to go swimmin' with bow legged women, I do, I do, I do...!
I love to go swimmin' with bow legged women, don't you, don't you, don't you...!

CHORUS: I love to go swimmin'...I do, I do...with bow legged women, don't you, don't you...I love to go swimming with bow legged women I do, I do I dooooo...!
****OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...IIIIIIIIIIIIIII...>>>>>

2. Love to go swimmin', with bow legged women and swim between their legs...! I love to go swimming with bow legged women and swim between their legs...!

{Now back to verse one (1) and you just keep going until someone wants to hurt you, with the OHHHHHHHHHHHHH...IIIIIIIIIIIII's getting longer and Longer...!

This was also I have heard, a song that Popeye the Sailor man sang, (Cartoon character from long ago...Hope that helped. I am looking for the midi file, as I don't play either the mouth harp or the accordion as I am doing a Karaoke CDG for a family reunion, as about a hundred of us are revisiting Letcher SD this July to bury grandma, Imo Jean just last fall at 98. Grandpa, bless him passed in the late 70's and I am the keeper of his songs...! Come see the whole family at my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/spiderman21112

My mom used to sing that song to my brother and I when we were kids (I am 46 now). She had some more verses, but I cannot remember them. She, sadly, has alzheimers now, or I would ask her.

My Dad who is gone now knew several lyrics to this. He only sang it when he was drunk.

"I love to go swimmin' with bow legged women
And dive between their knees.
If you know any ladies who need any babies,
Just send them all to me."

I can't remember the rest and Daddy died in 1996.

This sounds remarkably like a british army song to the tune "soldiers of the queen".Can't remember all the words but-

Nellie the cripple had only one nipple
To feed her baby on,
The poor little f....r had only one sucker
........
If you know any ladies who want to have babies
just send them round to me
.....todays the day
we give them away for free
Beacause we're
Soldiers of the Queen, my boys, etc

I want to go swimming with bow-legged women
And swim between their legs
Swim between their legs
Swim between their legs
I want to go swimming with bow- legged women
And swim between their legs
And never come up
And never come up
And never come up for air

I want to go swimming with big breasted women
And float them on their bellies
Float them on their bellies
Float them on their bellies
I want to go swimming with big breasted women
And float them on their bellies
And never come up
And never come up
And never come up for air

Gimli's line, "It's the Dwarves that go swimming with little hairy women!" (EE) is similar to a line in Jaws (1975): "Here's to men who go swimming with bow-legged women!"

Sincerely,
Gargoyle
Close but no cigar.
